orienteering 1:06:39 [4] 8.5 km (7:50 / km)
spiked:19/14c

Gorges de Franchard

not full of the usual happiness sensation afterwards... tiredness? too much trail running? a couple of mistakes too many? didn't much care for the course - dobb spikes on that rock just don't work.

maybe 7 minutes lost in total. grr. including three at the seond last when i ran up the last path.

stephane toussaint probably won in 61

running 1:06:00 [2]

parc de sceaux
tourist run :) well worth the train ride (10/15mins)

chateau, jardins, avenues, water features, parcours sportif...
... not exactly nature but very pretty

out for way more than one hour 10, stops to stretch in pretty places, remove flies from eyes etc.
pace was varied slow to decent, map in hand but i wasn't paying much attention to it

running 1:14:30 [2]

parc montsouris
brudsludge map in hand, reading it easily enough for 30 minutes, could barely do so after this point.

interesting!

forest run 1:22:00 [3]

orsay loop, or variation thereof... started 18h15 before sunset, very dark later on when the moon didn't reach the trails... tired

running 41:40 [2]

evening run in the cite

orienteering 50:00 [3]

putting the SI boxes out, same controls as yesterday so kept up a decent pace.

forest run 10:00 [3]

at least 10 or 15 minutes running to and from the start (incl quite a bit of climb!) a couple of times...

up before dawn this morning (oh the perdy stahrs), outside essentially non-stop from 07h to 17h, manning the start for aover two hours of that.

beautiful day again

orienteering 1:25:00 [4] 9.0 km (9:27 / km) +390m 7:46 / km

Ran the course after everyone had started... not much energy left in the legs. thankfully i had been told about the second control - not incorrectly place exactly, but there is a big décalage in the map - run up a huge spur from a building (how distinct an attackpoint do you want?) and one isn't on the correct spur. mapper needs to be taken out and whipped

aside from that, a couple of errors, one place i was moderately lost (but not seriously so), lost maybe five minutes total?? and then a lot on running speed. not trying to win in any case since n/c

fabrice ran 73 i think

Saturday Oct 23, 2004 #

forest run 40:00 [2]

Putting out controls, Petit Mont Chauvet, Forêt de Fontainebleau

Couple of mistakes, lost quite a bit of time due to slightly dodgy mapping (and some bits very dodgy!!)

ou t for an hour plus twenty minutes _running_ back to base.

weather is fantastic thankfully.

also spent time loading the van...

stretching 1:30 [1]

one hour and a half. not sure that it is a good idea just before a run.

torsal muscles stiff after the last session so it must count as a wrok out of some sort.

almost exclusively old women today lunchtime... tuesday evening is much better ;p

forest run 1:37:00 [3]

Orsay Villiers le Bacle loop, preceded by 5 minutes jog to gym.

good fast pace which felt easy for the most part. beautiful day.

Wednesday Oct 20, 2004 #

forest run 46:15 [3]

orsay before work

Tuesday Oct 19, 2004 #

forest run 1:21:30 [3]

Orsay loop (old one, out past cnrs on plateau)

felt good, legs slightly rickety maybe. forgot to take a map again. lovely day for running

stretching 1:15 [1]

tried the stretching class in Orsay. not stretching as I know it!!!

lots of back work, some arms and legs... good stuff i think
a bit over an hour... will do it again!

discovered a tight muscle - outside of shin/calf -didn't know this before but it ccauses the wincing pain on edge of leg (like hair pulling) an trembling when trying to stretch ham. had thought it was ligaments/tendons...

Monday Oct 18, 2004 #

running 42:40 [2]

easy run in the cité, Skommarbo map in hand again.
easy today to get back into proper training again this week or next....

must start taking maps more often.

orienteering 1:26:11 [4] 8.65 km (9:58 / km)
spiked:16/21c

Caverne des Brigands, Barbizon/Fontainebleau

Nice day, nice forest, albeit overgrown with ferns...
map was a bit suspect but sufficiently good to navigate by.

No grip on rock with dobb spikes - not the same stone as in swedn, so descending to the sixth control was v slow... pussyfooted...

an almost clear run apart from one HUGE cock-up. leaving the thirteenth I decided to head for the 15th which is bad in itself, but then decided that I had left from the 14th which turned it all into a huge error and I got completely lost and ran to the north of the map to relocate and then the long way to within a couple of hundredmetres of 15 before going: hold on a sec... I haven't been to the 14th... split second hesitation before turning around... 19+minutes lost... grrr

mistake due to laziness on 16, ran down the worng spur... then flew 17 out of frustration, lost 15 seconds on 18 qnd some time on 19 taking a hillier route than necessary... guh. haven't seen the final results but i would probably have been 7 or 8 minutes clear of second...

orienteering 18:08 [5] 3.5 km (5:11 / km)
spiked:23/23c

Sprint race, 1:3500, Base de Loisirs Bois le Roi

Simple navigation - visibility was decent - but difficult running after the longer race earlier. maybe 45 minutes between the two... didn't change/stretch/warmup/down... fastest time when leaving but eric Vannier looked serious :)

free orange juice and snacks afterwards was nice!!

forest run 1:21:18 [3]

orsay loop, the one that goes out to the west... extended a bit above the fac...

left leg still not recovered from the bruise

Thursday Oct 14, 2004 #

running 1:02:00 [3]

run with benoitP and FabriceV in Bois de Vincennes.

great to have company, terrain isn't the best given the time involved getting there...

decent pace...

think i'm beating the cold - took yesterday off due to it - better safe than sorry

Tuesday Oct 12, 2004 #

forest run 57:00 [2]

jog in orsay. no energy after sunday's race... also beginnings of a cold

Sunday Oct 10, 2004 #

orienteering 1:55:49 [5] 14.7 km (7:53 / km) +380m 6:59 / km
spiked:25/30c

Nationale - Toul near Nancy,
Plateau d'Ecrouves was the name of the map

one of my best races... really quite happy at the finish, although tired and cold - rained for the second half of the course. also fell on my left thigh around the fourteenth control and gave myself a dead leg - stiff afterwards...

most of it was on slopes or the edge of slopes so it was much easier technically for me than the day before. some route choices etc and a few small mistakes, but couldn't have hopd to do much better. only 5 minutes off fabrice and top ten (dr mispunched, tg absent, benoit cut short) in france... i think i lost five minutes max...

technical comments are on map. nearly fell into fortifications a couple of times, could have been nasty. sorry for not giving q more entertaining description to any readers out there :)

in any case, happy i can run and cope with simple orienteering at the same time. what a difference a year makes

ps francois gonon won in around 1h35!!!

Saturday Oct 9, 2004 #

running 10:00 [2]

warm up

orienteering 47:38 [5] 6.9 km (6:54 / km)
spiked:11/20c

Nationale middle distance
Le Mordant, Toul

horsed up this one. flat forest with lots of veg change detail and a few point features. i'm really bad at this stuff. nice to see it was mapped reasonably well, which makesa change for this type of forest in france.

i think the winner (johann tinchant? DR?) ran 37 or thereabouts.

PS neglected to mention i got tested after the race. needed 4 litres+ of water and a couple of hours before managing to piss, then pissed every twenty minutes for the next ...
stupidly didn't get changed and eat before hanging around fr the 2 jhours so got very very cold (and hungry)

Thursday Oct 7, 2004 #

running 45:00 [3]

parc montsouris
a few laps plus test-running next week's sprint race. looks like winning time should be in the range of 10-11 minutes if they can handle the pressure

rest yesterday and tomorrow. two days orienteering this weekend and my knees still ain't right

Tuesday Oct 5, 2004 #

forest run 55:00 [3]

orsay, same as yesterday, but cut straight fro, the gate to the gym...

Monday Oct 4, 2004 #

forest run 1:02:00 [2]

orsay run, gentle like last week's but with a bit added on - back down the way i come up by bat 336...

Sunday Oct 3, 2004 #

orienteering 1:22:59 [5] 9.87 km (8:24 / km) +210m 7:36 / km
spiked:18/29c

Foret de Cheptainville/Lardy

nice area, lot of flat stuff with point features and mixed vegetation and brambles and stuff. made 13 minutes of mistakes, of which maybe 5 were due to the map... which was a bit of a travesty. For people who are anyway experienced it isn't too serious, but if i had a group of beginners or kids out there i'd be fuming...

fabrice won in 68 or 69... a clean run and i'd have done 70... was running at about the same speed as fv for a good portion of the race - but i made mistakes... he caught me nearly at the 6th, then again at 11, i kept in front until after 13, then messed up 14...

oh, forgot my o-shoes, which didn't help... couldn't run fast on slopes... and knees are still rickety
