Sunday Aug 29, 2004 #

orienteering 1:30:06 [4] 9.5 km (9:29 / km)

open class so no competition - got beaten into second by 4:26

probably lost that on the third control... really messed up that one and a mistake at the first also cost quite a bit...

haven't seen splits yet. 1:15 map. ran large sections of the course well.

mistake on the second last i'm not happy with and don't understand.

running 16:00 [2]

warm up jog with andrew.

Wednesday Aug 25, 2004 #

orienteering 57:00 [4] 7.0 km (8:09 / km)

one/two man relay at Nacka.

with the leader (AQ) until just before the 5th control... dropped severzal places and then a bad route to the 6th...

tiredness and no motivation afterwards meant i didn't push hard. rained a bit and legs felt a little arthritic... one or two mistakes later on and i finished maybe 7 minutes after andrew. wasn't too far down the (weak) field...

Tuesday Aug 24, 2004 #

orienteering 48:00 [5]

training with andrewQ at Rydbo... tennisOL... idea being to give ten-twenty seconds head start alternately.... matchplay racing to next control... good stuff...

runnning faster gthan sensible, some (lots of) mistakes, 7-6 to him, although one was only a split second victory...

nice area. got darjk so had to cut short and jog back in twilight.

forest run 25:00 [3]

track run to the start - maybe 7-10 minutes

then 15-20 minutes (maybe) jogging back in the half-dark, half in terrain, then on rough indistinct (at night) path. ankles survived, just.

Note

managed not to get off the train the first time i tried, by the way, although i succeeded the second time i arrived at the training area! Door closed in my face the first time :)

Monday Aug 23, 2004 #

forest run 47:55 [2]

run in Boson with Ailbhe. lovely cool temperature, sunshine, shade, sea, forest... sweden is wonderful.

Note

padddling maybe 8km in kayak with rachelS, nickM&ailbhe and AQ in the others, also went for a wee swim.

good upper body training.

orienteering 1:37:20 [5] 13.1 km (7:26 / km)

Solna Klassisk... same start/finish area as the day before, but not sure how much of the maps overlapped. In any case, the course today was much less technically interesting, still decent orienteering but...

got caught at the first control.... leapfrogged this guy for quite a while - he made a mistake at the second, met again at the third from where he ran off in the wrong direction, so i was still ahead of him until a mistake at the sixth - ran up the wrong "shallow" hill... always a little bit behind up to the map exchange at the 9th, despite alternate route choices etc. Possible to run the thing so much better.

mistake at the 11th allowed a better orienteer to catch us and from therethings were quite tight until the 19th, when a mistake on their part allowed me to get well clear. horsed up the 21st though, and the route to the 22nd so only ahead of one of them at the finish.

fairly hard running most of the way. could have continued, but some hours afterwards am very tired.

Winner was Michal Jedlicka in 1:15. Despite the teamwork AQ was three or four minutes faster than me. Impressive.

Saturday Aug 21, 2004 #

orienteering 2:11:07 [4] 13.5 km (9:43 / km)

Sigtuna Klassisk race...

Michal Jedlicka won in 1:27:52.
1:15 map... found it hard to read, not sure what size things are in reality... starting to get the hang of it later on in the course. 21 days... aghhh... 50 seconds faster than AQ.

i have work to do...

running 8:00 [4]

decent-paced run to the start (1.8km?) - only 4 minutes late for my start...

not sure how long it took...

Friday Aug 20, 2004 #

Note

two days without running... aahhhh... and A beer last night, first one since students banquet...

walked enough yesterday and today for legs not to be completely rested... in fact they probably need a few days regardless

Wednesday Aug 18, 2004 #

orienteering 53:00 [2]

a wee course in ångsgarden near karen's... maybe 4km, technical.... rough and hilly enough in places to make me walk given triedness levels. technical enough to be worthwhile training - map interpretation was difficult in places... two days rest now to feel fresh for the races at the weekend.

running 21:00 [3]

warm-up/down

don't like running in dobb spikes on gravelly forest paths :(

Tuesday Aug 17, 2004 #

forest run 55:00 [2]

guh. nice but tired run on the ånggården map near karen's... not much to say really, quite pretty in places... ate some blueberries... and read the nynas map quite well... much better at virtual orienteering than i used to be

Monday Aug 16, 2004 #

forest run 19:00 [5]

trail run, fast as poss, 9 minutes, 8min break, ten minutes, on map near karen's

first time doing something lkike that since leaving paris.

forest run 50:00 [2]

warm-up,down and between intervals... 7or8 minutes on road... good stretching session...

Sunday Aug 15, 2004 #

running 18:00 [2]

warm--up/down

orienteering 1:05:00 [4]

orienteering intervals with karenW, ifk goteborg clubhouse map. tired for the latter haldf and a couple of mistakes dropped the intensity down a bit.

nice area. nice training. medium sized hills with some contour detail, some rock (crag) detail... its of open rock to run on. old (not oringen 04) map

Saturday Aug 14, 2004 #

forest run 1:04:52 [3]

trail run with KarenW, 5-minutes on road. on map near apart in goteborg

Friday Aug 13, 2004 #

running 20:00 [3]

Thursday Aug 12, 2004 #

running 18:00 [2]

warm-up/down

orienteering 1:40:50 [4] 7.1 km (14:12 / km)

Surahammars SOK golfbåna map - course planned by Finns... quite a bit of green... in which i ran atrociously... had difficulty running, keeping a direction, reading the map... visibility was low.

It is WOC-relevant. The question is how, and how much. I'm not very good at green... do I train it now?? or try to pick races without green??

Klaus ran it in around 70... so lost thirty minutes on him from the 9th control.

Wednesday Aug 11, 2004 #

running 13:00 [2]

warm-up/down/up

orienteering 50:15 [4] 5.8 km (8:40 / km)

Actjarnarnarnarnarna

WOC training area. Nice white forest. Technical but very good visibility. No major mistakes. Used four minutes verifying aafter arriving at the control site, so could have done 45-46 with controls...

Klaus/Misha ran 39ish. 40 might be qualifying time for a final?? Can I pull in five minutes in three weeks? How? Happy with my run... only minor wobbles... but I have to learn to do the same running fast. Twentieth and final control was easy and I ran it fast, along the top of a ridge. Stony but runnable ground. 3:04 to MM's 3:06 :) He asked me why I don't run the rest of the course like that. Why indeed... fitness and map-reading.

Thw whole forest was stony/runnable. Next day's map is much tougher, fell several times, esp in green

orienteering 16:59 [5]

Sprint Training, Västerås. Råby

Lost a minute maybe at the end on the final control, maybe twenty seconds due to a heavy fall towards the end, and a minute due to cutting rather than taking paths. Path running is much much faster.

That would take me down to 14:40. I reckon qualification is sub14,,, Klaus ran 13:17 or some such a while back. Misha, not trying, ran 15 or so...

Sunday Aug 8, 2004 #

orienteering 1:41:09 [5] 11.0 km (9:12 / km)

Ava Norra
Irish WOC Trials - Classic

reduced distance...

already lost ten minutes to Marcus over the first 6 controls incl a bad route choice. in Sweden, go straight!

Not a good run but still finished second... again to marcus who ran a very good, steady 88 minutes, losing maybe 3 minutes in total

running 6:00 [4]

fast run to the start. we arrived late so i had to peg it. arrived 15 seconds before call-up. not ideal pre-race preparation. grrr

Saturday Aug 7, 2004 #

orienteering 42:45 [5] 5.3 km (8:04 / km)

ava norra
Irish WOC Trials
Middle distance.
Marcus Pinker won in 42.09, so not far behind in second place. AQ retired injured.
We both made maybe three minutes of mistakes...

more detailed commentary on map. nice area

Friday Aug 6, 2004 #

orienteering 1:02:08 [3]

Nynäs - training - easy-paced to get used to swedish map-reading again. no drastic errors after the first control. sans boussole cos it's in uppsala

orienteering 1:38:00 [5]

Torsti Vrh?
OO Cup day 3, in any case.

karst depressions all over the place, hills too...

Was nine seconds outside the chasing start so started two minutes after at (11h) +47.

long first leg. started off without a fully-formed plan. Fatal. got lost for a while. Imagine I lost 4-5 minutes on this leg. then ran well until a mistake on the way to the 9th, ran down the wrong path, losing less than two minutes, i'd say. then ran from ten to twelve... the wleventh was right inbetween and looked like another depression :( didn't notce until looking at the map after the race.

minor errors owards the fifteenth. then running well again until i left the map at the 17th.... lost a couple of minutes and the group i had overtaken were well ahead again (i presume).

struggled on for the rest of the course. kept moving but quite tired.

great competition. pity about the mistakes on day2 and the mistakes+PM today.

ps thankfully(???) i had borrowed a compass for today's event.

Sunday Aug 1, 2004 #

orienteering 1:49:09 [5] 9.0 km (12:08 / km)

oo cup
mala planina (velika planina)

maleev ran 72...
missed an interesting route choice on the LONG third leg. mistake at the (easy) first control, more technical fourth...

almost completely lost on the thirteenth leg, although i was able to make (almost) everything make sense afterwards...
a couple of mistakes late in the course too...

lovely area, mixture of fast open and technical rough... even mamleev made three minutes f mstakes

should have orienteered 15 minutes faster.
