orienteering 58:26 [4] 5.8 km (10:04 / km) +289m 8:04 / km

Swiss Relay Champs,
old man category (H 135?), unofficial

Mostly good run. I almost hit 10 min/km ... Marco S for example did not, on the 8km course. I think the top guys were maybe doing 57 for 7.8km, so not the fastest terrain.

trail run 1:01:00 [3]

Lignon loop. Getting faster.

Morning run. Longer swim in the Rhone after work. Then moving boxes in the evening, followed by outdoor jazz concerts. A good day!

Schiehallion long.
WOC selection. I mostly knew I had no chance, but a race is a race.

A few mistakes...
Tough running... stability muscles all sore the next day...
Pretty exhausted by the time I was heading to 17.

And I thought this was supposed to be close to 10 or 11 km?

Schiehallion Middle
WOC selection

50 minutes would have done it, but I haven't been running enough. Also made a 2-3 minute mistake at 16. I think the map was sketchy there, possibly elsewhere too.

Mispunched apparently, running past the control? For a while I thought it was an SIair cluster, but presumably not.

First twenty controls of this - http://omaps.worldofo.com/index.php?id=124567

Some nice narrow cobbled streets descending to an agitated sea, cute painted houses, and then some dilapidated social housing areas, good training for next weekend. Also got some SIAC practice in. Some lack of focus around 9/10, mostly ok besides that. Print quality wasn't.

Fun. Skipped the last few controls, as it was turning into a longer session than I needed.

running 57:00 [2]

To and from Foz Velha.

Body is getting used to road-running again.

Note

Hotel in Porto is a bit strange. Yesterday, they didn't have the key to my room but said it might be there in the door, some guy had it earlier to replace the key. Nope, so back down to reception to get a cleaning lady to let me back in.

Today, I come back, the door is wide open, there's some dust on the floor from drilling, I go out and get the cleaning lady to hoover it up. Meanwhile, all the other doors on the floor are wide open and the full set of room keys is sitting on a table.

orienteering 53:53 [4] *** 8.77 km (6:09 / km) +296m 5:15 / km

Most of a Porto city race course in the old town, with lots of hills and churches and cobbles and cafés and stairs and passages and shtuff.

Don't have QR on this computer.

Felt fit for the first time in a good while, though my left ham was twinging a little.

Conference is good. Scored an invite to Rio from one of the main speakers, unfortunately not coinciding with my brother's wedding.

running 15:00 [3]

To the first control, where I started. The o time includes finding my way back to the hotel (gps turned off in the lift).

Nearest map to the hotel. My brain wasn't working particularly well, not enough sleep? Or just terrible at orienteering.

No QR for the moment, bu this is the course - http://omaps.worldofo.com/index.php?id=57825

Tricky enough.

A couple of gates were closed. More seriously, the Solar do Vinho do Porto has closed down.

Le Grand Roc, Semnoz.

Slowroute!

Idea was to do 3/4 of the WC long from 2010. Heading to the start, I realised I'd left my compass in the car. Not sure if it was that or just general poor navigation, but I failed miserably in the map-reading department.

Mistakes on all the first 5 controls. A couple of times I though I was navigating into the control nicely only to be elsewhere. 6 through 9 went better, but by that stage I was done.

Quickroute!
Middle Distance training au Grand Roc, Semnoz.

Only an hour's drive from Geneva, and that's without using the autoroute!

Went mostly fine, hot enough or lazy enough that I didn't go too fast. Oh, there were zones with branches and trunks and shit laid over karsty stony nastiness, and that was a horrible combination which slowed me down to a walk, and I think after that I had a hard time getting moving again.

The veg has changed a fair bit since the map was made/updated. Théo F apparently ran this in 36, which seems fast. http://ben5907.free.fr/show_map.php?user=maxx&map=...

Fun.

Pitched the tent there afterwards, in with all the VTTishists preparing for regional champs the next day. Then went down to Annecy, didn't run the sprint because I couldn't find the map.
7 PM

running 15:00 [3]

Jog by Lac d'Annecy, followed by a swim and a shower, then a burger in the old town and the end of Barca Juve... by which time the storms had begun.

Rain wasn't heavy walking back to the car, but I don't think two seconds went by without a flash of lightning. Could nearly have read a book by it.

Back up on Semnoz, my tent had a leaking seam. Not too much water came in (rain stopped soon after), but I should perhaps find out how to repair it, or stick to dry-weather camping... in which case the tent is mostly useful as insect protection.

Friday Jun 5, 2015 #

Note

Too hot to sleep the past couple of nights. Finally some thunderstorms this evening, getting a little less oppressive.

Also, my office must have been 40+ at times.

Wednesday Jun 3, 2015 #

trail run 45:00 [3]

Didn't bring socks to work, so couldn't go running from there. Instead went with Andrea later, and then for a swim in the Rhone. Tough life.

Note

sad.

On a brighter note, the portaloos blew over at the Shamrock, one of them occupied.
