Note

I think there's a bus from Dublin airport to Lisburn tomorrow, but in case anyone is passing and wants to pick up a me, let me know! Cheers.
I get in at midday.

trail run 1:10:00 [3]

Evening run, Lignon loop, except I tried to cut up instead of continuing under Pont Butin at dusk. Intruded into three (swanky) gardens before finding may up to the road.

AOWN. Out near the cows I heard a noise, stepped back a pace, and from almost under my feet a fox popped out.

La Rochette
Ch. Ligue de Sprint

I got a nc run after all the competitive people. 2.40 down on the fastest... clearly I'm slow. Good course made the most of not the most interesting terrain. And good training for the IOC, quite relevant as it turned out.

orienteering race 35:00 [4]

CLC at Nance near Lac d'Aiguebelette

Except I was running a mass-start for individuals afterwards, since I have no friends. Or at least, no French club in this Ligue.

Good fun, tough setting off into limestone chaos, boulders that fell down from the mountain/cliffs above... a bit like the terrasses de Geneve...

My prof here wrote a *computer program* in '62 or so calculating a trajectory to get a rocket to the moon.

trail run 1:09:00 [3] 10.62 km (6:30 / km) +293m 5:43 / km

Nice run, Lignon loop for the first time since I did my calf/ham in, accompanied by a tringalingadingdong of cows out the far end.

Got pawed in the chest and play-bitten on the arm by a big whitish dog thing early on.

running 53:00 [3]

Cirque du fer à cheval, Sixt, with BlairT.

Gorgeous evening, and even if we only started running at 8pm, there was still light and warmth and oodles of waterfalls.

Lucked out finding a place to serve us food after too, and I found a parking spot once home. Good times.

80km is a little far to drive each way to only run once. I should start camping.

Swimming in the Rhône!

Two dips, maybe 80m downstream each go. Brr. But sunny and nice warm tarmac to lie out on, until some drugged up men decided to have a wrestle, an argument, a fight, punches were thrown, a knife was drawn, I think a knife may have flown past me into the river, I was skedaddling at that point as things got a bit too close. Still in my togs, I left my stuff apart from my phone, started calling 112, but then some woman was already onto the police. They arrived in not three minutes, impressive, but by that stage things had calmed down.

Lovely besides that.

My new favourite orienteering shoes!

Sarvas reborn. Ionly wore them a couple of times, as the heels are way too wide. I lost a lot of energy running Finnish short champs last year as the feet kept slipping around, and they were a recipe for twisted ankles. At some point I tried giving them away, but no takers.

Hopefully half a centimetre of padding each side will do magic. They seemed pretty nice when I tested them this evening.

Note

Just discovered IOC clashes with http://www.llrco.fr/NATIONALESO2015/index.htm
At least I booked flights already, otherwise it would have been a tough choice. Next year there's apparently a 5days in le Larzac, mid-July. Yum yum yum.

orienteering 46:00 [4] 6.03 km (7:37 / km) +151m 6:47 / km

CO à Pougny

I was fastest by a margin, but it seems I may have mispunched (again) http://club-orienteer.web.cern.ch/club-orienteer/2...

One big mistake, a few swings, and a bad route-choice trying to descend the stream.

Tough to run, I'm def a long way from fit.
4 PM

trail run 30:00 [2] 5.0 km (6:00 / km) +100m 5:27 / km

Then a pretty jog by the Valserine. Good instinct.

The river does this
then this
then disappears for a bit

before reappearing downstream

There was cool moss growing down by the river.

27º when I checked the weather at 5pm. Might have gone for a swim on the way home if I'd brought a towel.

Loch Vaa, just north of Aviemore.

Nice, soft suppamaasto, brought back good memories from woc2013. Pretty, fun, and mostly sunny, with the odd scrap of snow on the ground.

Thanks to Estonians for the maps.

orienteering 1:20:00 [2] ***

Stayed the night at my cousins' in Lindores, then went to Birnam to pick up some maps and lunch (milk and shortbread biscuits).

Dozed a bit in the car park before setting out. Did a couple of controls on Bonskeid, then crossed the bridge to the Linn of Tummel map, 13c there. Another few on Bonskeid on the way back.

Still have some phlegm to cough up. But basically I'm unfit and need to do some faster training sessions. I did decide towards the end that not-very-motivated me should not jog, either walk or run, and that was better.

Lovely out. Drove up to Aviemore later. For a while it was simultaneously raining, snowing and sunny.

Pretty barren in the Highlands, it'd remind you of Nevada nearly.

Skipped running the relay, but fun hanging out.

Car, train, bus, train, bus to St Andrews after.

JK Long

Didn't know if I'd even make it as far as the spectator, but did that and two controls more.

This was fun. Throat was a bit scratchy, so tried not to let the heart rate get high, kept it steady.

Terrain was great. Pity I had to skip the last hour...

Strange sickness, sore throat, coughing up phlegm, but energy levels never collapsed.

Started ok, at least, didn't screw up the first four controls. But racing speed and edge is not there at all. And then towards the end (well, after 7 or 8 controls) I was getting tired.

Lots of room for progress at least.
