trail run 41:30 [2]

What, did I just go for a run?

Thousands upon thousands of geese around.

It was interesting seeing them all fly past the high power lines, until a couple of them didn't make it.

Note

Reports from lunch yesterday indicate I looked like one of these. Throat still sore. Energy levels slowly improving.

Wednesday Sep 24, 2014 #

Note

More energy, still v sore and tired.

Orienteers may be surprised at this -- http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-29341796

throat still v sore, seem to be a little less wretched than yesterday though... hopefully...

After feeling a bit sick every other day, it switched to every day after Thursday's training... so I missed this -- http://routegadget.tulospalvelu.fi/2014/cgi-bin/re...

Properly sick now.

Sprint training Lauttasaari
I wasn't fit to run, so did map-memory instead... easy enough, so didn't need to look at the map much. Jogged some small bits.

Note

This isn't the best advertisement for running:
"What is the best thing about running?
Running is so exciting! You know, I really enjoy it because it’s something I am passionate about it. Since I started competing internationally, as a professional, it’s just been great fun because we get a chance to work around the world, we meet people, we socialise and it’s something we enjoy. Although it’s tough – I know some guys, whenever they are trying to do a bit of training, especially ones who are not professional runners, they always complain a lot! But for us we are used to it, and it’s great fun, and we enjoy running. When I was out for almost a year I really appreciated my running because I really missed it."

Note

Went to bed around 10pm two nights in a row. The result... sore throat, not too bad so far, but still...

running 38:00 [2]

to work

There were about a hundred of us from HS helping out at the district sprint champs last night, for a bit over five hundred competitors. I put out two controls and then sat on a wooden swinging bench for the evening watching them. And doing maths, and chatting with Veli. And took the two controls back to the CC afterwards.

AM sprintti H21 (from yesterday) course

Met up with Tommaso to run this after work. Nice course. I wasn't too sharp, nor running super-fast. Heavy shoes and heavy body.

Gates around controls 12,13 were closed, opening and closing them after took a bunch of time and broke what rhythm I had. Fun anyhow, but how am I going to run fast in a week?!

Note

The big debate over at http://www.suunnistus.net/fi/chat appears to be about why the course-setter tried to kill us.

At least in his notes he said big stones, big cliffs, dangerous, big stones mapped as small stones, giant boulders mapped as large ones, dangerous slopes, dangerous cliffs... with some other words in between.

Maybe I just chose good micro-routes, but I came out alive.

The principal complaint was control 65, our number 10, directly above a bunch of cliffs, and the reasonable routes to 11 all entailed getting down...

Note

I suspect the green stuff in the lake yesterday was algal bloom, which may explain my neck rash today.

Routegadget!

WRE, but it turns out only A and B1 finals get points, sucks for almost half the internationals (me, Tommaso and Will). Oh well.

I ran pretty well, but not fast enough, had energy at the end (not that I wasn't tired after). Had a headache pre-start from yesterday's racing, but that disappeared on the way to 1.

It was a little foggy to start with, just enough to hide the sun. There were cobwebs everywhere, gazillions of them, in places the woods turned almost white. Pretty out. And coming up from three to four as the sun burnt through was magical.

Anto caught me 2 minutes en route to 6, I'd caught a guy from Ulvila at 1 already, and kept meeting up with him... three of us went to 7, 8 with a wobble (my biggest control circle mistake - 25s), then we took different routes for the long leg to 9. Anto was the fastest of us, nominally. I took the straightest line, playing to my strengths... coming into the control, Ulvila guy arrives as I punch... I stay higher the shortish leg to 10, and spot Anto halfway heading to 9, what?! Good down out of 10 to the trail, but then I stay on the trail instead of cutting where I ought, lose 30s here. Stop for water to think about the second half of 11 again, Ulvila passes, as do two others. I decide to go road as well, pass Ulvila, get control, think I see him as I leave, he coming from below. Push to 12, hit it well, scoot around the slippery bare or mossy rock, manage not to fall, to 13 then down the hill to 14 (same leg as yesterday) and finish, happy.

As always, should be doing it faster and with fewer hesitations.

http://www.mysport.fi/mysport/my-o/index.php?optio...
91.5% success, 79% routine speed. 5 mins errors, which I don't believe, I just ran a couple of legs too well :) Eg, 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, no mistakes in the circle... 6 I lost some time en route, bu I wouldn't have said a full minute... 5 I did waste 15s at 4 deciding my route.

Not the best of runs... big mistake (2 mins, maybe 2:30) to 2. Mistake leaving 2 too, for another 45s. And going to 4 I changed plans which probably cost another 20-30s. A wobble to 7, but not bad, and good for the rest apart from hesitations going to 11.

I think if I hadn't effed up 2 I'd be happy with the run, but that's partly because the Finns had talked about this place like it was scary. Speed was poor on the downhills since I didn't want to die. Going uphill didn't feel too bad. I fell once properly, coming of the ride onto the forest road on the way to 8, foot went from under me as I was turning, skidded a bit and scratched my ass (for a change) and my arm.

Long way back on Timo's 45 minutes, just scraped into B2 finaali.

According to http://www.mysport.fi/mysport/my-o/index.php?optio...
my routine speed is just under 70% of the fastest, and my success on the course was 86%.

Went out at dusk, ran four controls (missed the first one by over a minute, misread the hilltop area), then went to collect my two. Nice glow from the sunset on the hilltop between them, then descended between big cliffs into the darkest depths for the second control. Just about found it, then ran back beside the lake and through the field. I didn't break the Iltarastit caravan.
