Note

So I think I got bitten on Sunday by something that was neither mosquito nor deerfly, nor horsefly, nor midge, nor hornet, nor moosefly. But I don't know what it was. I didn't see it bite, just saw blood (thus not mosquito...) and it didn't hurt. There's a swelling still. Any ideas what it could have been?

Note

Oops, flying to Ireland without a raincoat. That's asking for trouble.

Note

On the Jokeri (550 bus) this morning, an old, old man got on, flashed something to the driver and said words including ilman and sotaveteraani, or some such. Impressive.

Note

Päivänsana: raskaasti ... I don't know what it means, but apparently I should.

running 23:00 [3]

To the library to print something, then valintatalo, then home. Included 4 minutes fast. Haven't done that for a while.

trail run warm up/down 15:00 [2]

orienteering 59:50 [4] ***
18c

FinnSpring viesti

HS IV.3 with Anto, Lauri R and Pekka.

40th, averaging 1/3 slower than the fastest of around 45 mins/leg.

I still felt a bit tired, but better than yesterday, perhaps new shoes and a little flatter (?) terrain helped.

Reasonably good navigation, but not happy yet. Actually, looking back, I was pretty tired today too :) It only turned into mistakes on 7 (50s?) and in-the-circle losses of 10-20s on 6, 9. 14, 17, but there was a bunch of struggling to read the map and route hesitations and whatnot on 5, 7, 8, 9, 10...

And en route to 15, near the top of the green, I whipped a sapling into my eye, ow. Couldn't do much with that eye for the next half-minute, but it seems like it's just bruised.

Overnighting in the arena worked wonderfully. It was a little chilly outside my sleeping-bag, but by 8am the place was already warming up nicely. And I ddin't have to get up at 6 to catch a bus. Hurrah.

Note

This felt like a breakthrough weekend wrt Finnish. I had at least three 'proper' conversations essentially in Finnish. Weird.

trail run warm up/down 15:00 [2]

orienteering race 1:35:31 [3]
28c

FinnSpring
Had hopes of running better, but my legs weren't in the mood, and my mind had trouble too. I think I was still a bit tired from Gbg.

Stupid mistake on #3 (30-40s), mistakes on #5 (1:25), #12 (15s), #13 (dir leaving #12) (20s), #26 (70s).
My-O counts 7:47 of errors, but I disagree. 87% success... http://www.mysport.fi/mysport/my-o/index.php?optio...#
Bolds weren't in the best of shape starting, and they loosened (not sure if because of the 'fitlock' disintegrating or just getting wet), retied one en route to 6, and the other en route to 9. Independently of all that, between 10 and 11, I got a stick through the sole (like in Westmoreland with my O-Rocs). So I stopped and sat down for a bit and waggled it back out the way it came in. Foot wasn't too sore (not even a scratch, though it puncture the insoles and bruised a little), so I started running again, just a bit gingerly and none too motivated. Tried to push a little nevertheless, as competition it is, but I was pretty happy not to be needing this race for tiomila selection. Pottered along. Managed to run up the hill to 21, which surprised me, just kept going at a steady pace, had someone behind me for 22-25, made a mistake at 26 so punched behind him there, overtook him to the last control, let him (and most everyone else) outsprint me, since I wasn't in a battle for seconds today.

Hohum, could have been worse. Also, looked for gps this morning, couldn't find it, turns out it was in the *other* bag.

Everyone else piled in the bus back to Hel, I stayed on and camped overnight. Really quite pleasant, only met the one mosquito and I won.

fat-burning (aka in search of breakfast) jog. Two hills then up to the top of Latokartano map, Alepa and home.

What's with the weather, warm and sunny!

Ovh: read some epic nighto map, plus some latokartano.

Note

I knew something would go badly wrong if I ran this much. I've been training more than alex the past week.

Note

Any 2drerun experts out there?

This isn't calibrated properly... http://3drerun.worldofo.com/2d/index.php?idmult[]=...

Despite being imported directly from http://www.mysport.fi/mysport/my-doma/show_map.php...

Any idea why? Somewhat strangely, 2drerun (or maybe Topi's gps) thinks that Topi ran on the 19th, rather than the 18th.

Note

For the record, though I'm sure I won't understand any of it in a few year's time, but it does have the map names.

2. Ennakointi ja havainnointi Oxsjön 9,6 km / 5,2 km
Pe 18.4. klo 9
Tavoite: Harjoitella olennaisen ennakointia ja havainnointia vaikeassa maastossa reippaassa vauhdissa.

Tarkistitko rastin takana olevat kohteet?

Pariviesti
Another mixed sprint relay! I'm becoming an expert. Fastest session of the camp.

Three loops for me, two for Riikka. One swerve, one #3-#2-#3 stupidity, a couple of hesitations, mostly good. Overtaken again by Eikka on the last loop, he was going waaay faster.
9 PM

orienteering 1:10:00 [2] *** 8.02 km (8:44 / km)
12c

Passed a couple of huge Easter bonfires on the way.

Pretty tired jogging to the start, once I started orienteering I felt a bit better. Mostly good navigation. One mistake I might not have made if I hadn't seen someone else's lamp, or had just been a bit less stupid. And another mistake on the last control, too much simplification and not enough map-reading.

I was fairly sure I'd have to skip three controls to make it back in time, but in hindsight I could probably have got them... weak. Good session all the same.

Private, I think.

Epic. Had to skip one control to make it back before the bus left, and then my lamp dropped to lowest-beam as the battery reached some low level.

If you just ignore the fact it's scary night-o and go find the controls, it's not that hard. Except #4. And the stacked form-lines.

6 PM

orienteering 1:09:00 [2] 7.92 km (8:43 / km)

This was annoying. After making Marie leave work early and not hanging out with her so I could get to club training, they left the vandrarhem early, having forgotten about me. I think I was probably in the corner shop outside the campsite when the bus would have gone by.

So I helped the amazing Synnöve prepare food for 50 on a four-ring stove, grabbed a local map when everyone returned and went out on some lovely terrain which made me happy again. Though still annoyed.

I ran on the same map as Sunday morning's session, but drew a couple of my own controls and then got the far ones, so on Sunday I could do the shorter loop without much guilt. Running up hills in terrain, I tried to channel some of Marie's technique and not swing about too much. She knows how to run.

I may have to start following Muukkosen bloggi.
11 AM

orienteering 51:58 [4] 6.9 km (7:32 / km)
20c

Raseborg's Vårtävling
Course length 6.9, ran 7.8 km or so.

Mixture of good and not so good. No hugely punishing mistakes, but could have been maybe two minutes faster?

This high-vis avokallio stuff no longer scares me. Which means I need to get fitter. Very fun orienteering!

To the second-last control I ran into a branch while running across the rock. Thankfully it broke, head got a bit shook but it didn't stop me.

1 - ok, had to stop to look at the map a few times. Print quality was lacking.
2 - now I understand what I did, wasn't too far from good, but lost maybe 20s, caught by the bald guy who started a minute behind
3 - different routes, arrived the same time and both made a little swing into the control
4 - barely had enough information, but spiked, bald guy was high, but ahead of me by the time I'd figured route to 5, and we caught two others here too
5 - good. group tried leading me down the spur before the control, I resisted, spike.
6 - trying to push to make a gap, slopy rock was helvettin liukasta (in the words of Ville), so I didn't climb the hill, mistake, instead running around the base of the rock, and lower than I thought. 40s? Group caught me as I thought about route to 7.
7- I went left along the road and then along the base of the hills, 9 mins to 6mins fastest, so I guess straight was faster. Clean woods, and easy enough, so my route being simpler didn't matter. Oh, lost 15s in the circle too, bald guy arrived same time, and two-minute-behind guy, I think.
8 - see hill, run over hill, punch, leading.
9- direction leaving 8 was a bit off, but I corrected faster than baldy, I think. Anyway, ran straight to 9, couple of people behind me, but saw a tag just left of the ridge and ran to it, for stupidity's sake (I blame print quality here too, I looked a couple of times at the map and was fairly but not entirely sure the invisible marsh was to the right of the ridge). 10s. Now behind again.
10- Stupid, followed bald guy group of two, knew what line we were running on but not enough to know it didn't lead to control, poor. 1min. Eeros caught us here.
11- checked map this time, run down, re-entrant to left, people in front made spiking easy.
12 - stayed a little higher than group, silly, because mini-valley gave the exact height of control, so I ended up glancing at map more than necessary, and followed people into control anyway.
13 - I started behind, punched with the lead, better orienteering.
14 - better here too (I navigated to gap in cliffs), but Eero was a touch faster up the hill, thought description was NE foot of hill, but it was NW, so I followed Eeros' swerve, 4s :)
15 - didn't follow plan, so ended up going up steep hill after a fall and a pause. Group made me start to push again once up for a spike, so only 10s lost maybe in the route/pause.
16 - stayed high momentarily to get the less steep descent, up between the big cliffs, then good direction (yay vis) took me straight to control, though I was hesitant the last few metres. Others punched behind.
17 - another long route-choice pause, then decided to cross swamp where it was thin, seem to have lost 30m or so to the others. Eero sped up here and pulled away. Spiked
18 - just right of the line, didn't have a proper plan, but corrected without really losing time (well, 2s map-reading might have saved 6 or 7 seconds).
19 - branch, spike
20 - where's the tape, where's the tape? and there was a tree or something in the way, so swerved a little, fast running and short distance, anyway.
Finish, 19s, fastest was 15!

So potential to run 2.30 faster on navigation, would be happy with 1.30 faster...

Need to read map better. Need to get fitter.

Billnäs keskimatka

Up late last night, but was strangely awake for the race itself. Wasn't getting much oxygen in through the nose, but apart from that felt reasonably good, and good the last three controls or so.

Largely good, some swings (eg #5 and #6), left 1 in the wrong direction, but being clean in the circle on most controls helped - the second last control I went 15m past down the slope, biggest mistake of that sort.
#9, the long leg, was poor. I took ten seconds or so to think about which way to go (beginner), then a chiropractor with a shiny head passed me, and I caught up with him again after we left the road, but was pushing reasonably hard to catch him... and he took us on a strange route through the green slash. Probably a minute lost.
13 and 14 had unnecessary (well, maybe not) hesitations, probably costing 20s total.

The terrain didn't punish mistakes.

trail run warm up/down 8:00 [2]

Given that a couple of minutes of this was post-race, I clearly didn't do a proper warm-up. At least it was cold and wet, so the warm-up beforehand was less essential.
