orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

Shouldn't have run 4h in 3 days last week. muscles fine but bones etc rickety. not a good idea.

Sgonico - training

part of a course... ...
nice place. need to practice map reading while running. really bad at it...

running 1:35:00 [3]

ICTP - Trieste. Napoleonica, new way down from Mte Belvedere...

Muscles surprisingly fine, bones will collapse if I don't take a day off :)

running 1:00:00 [3]

home, Mte Belvedere and back... 400m climb?
there wasn't more than a few minutes on flat or near flat, at any rate :)

went up the way I came down on prior occasions... then found a new way back, much better - relatively little on road... still stony tracks and stuff so doen't help the legs much, but much prettier and nicer on the lungs :)

running 1:25:00 [3]

ICTP-Trieste... kept to the Napoleonica, almost up Belvedere... descended to the tram-line, faffed about an extra couple of minutes in Villa Giulia - apart from that, and two pauses to drink water and adjust straps, about as fast as possible at a 'normal' pace.
Over 400m climb, I think.

running 1:50:00 [4]

ICTP-Adriatico to Trieste, up to Prosecco, along second half of the Napoleonica, new extension to Mte Belvedere, on a bit further along a nice ridge track, then back cos there was no way down... and getting dark... descended the wrong way into Trieste...

... running rather than jogging most of it... walked a little in Trieste and there were a couple of pauses. out for 2h10 though :)
PS - over 500m climb

orienteering 40:45 [5] 3.3 km (12:21 / km)

Primorska League, Slovenia. Predgrize.
A map I trained on once over the summer. Didn't exactly help my confidence, but made the orienteering a _little_ easier. A fantastic area. Beautiful weather too.

Tihomir Salopek ran 35:42 and he made a couple of mistakes.

I pushed as hard as I could, therefore lost contact a couple of times... didn't relocate properly on the second last control wasting a couple of extra minutes. Ran a few legs about as well as I could, but overall it wasn't a great run. Could have done 35 without too much trouble, maybe. v enjoyable though!

PS yes of course, 3.3km was the longest course.

running 1:10:00 [4]

ICTP to Trieste
jogged up the hill, as far as the motorway, went oops and headed back to find the start of the Strada Napoleonica. Got overtaken by some guy, said this ain't on... so ran hard the length of the Napoleonica and on as far as Villa Giulia. took the last half a km easy :)

Have to run hard more often. even if it kills me.

orienteering 1:46:40 [4] 9.8 km (10:53 / km) +500m 8:40 / km

Monte Grappa, Veneto long distance champs... winner ran 84. I ran over 700m of climb (I counted 750 but...) - well, running is something of a misnomer. Didn't have a lot of energy. Didn't feel like I was good at orienteering. Walked up quite a few hills. first half of the course was nice. Then there was a 2.5km mostly path leg and the rest wasn't particularly techincal. Hohum.
Tired after the previous evening was my excuse :)

running 1:30:00 [3]

Guesthouse Adriatico (ICTP) to via Fabio Severo, Trieste. 6:10 to 7:55... stopped to ask directions, walked a little at the end... with rucksack.
Ran up steps/tracks to Prosecco and then (eventually) along the bellisima Strada Napoleonica towards Opicina. Forked off it onto hillside path, quite rocky, then forest paths, couple of short road stretches and more paths until maybe 15 minutes away form Trieste centre... by road...
legs fairly battered after.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Trieste - still trying to find a nice run. Up by the Boschetta again to Ferdinandeo.... then around the top of the valley and back the other side by road... still not ideal. Quite a bit of climb involved.

Collected 'local' maps from CAI XXX ottobre...

running 50:00 [3]

Trieste... from the apartment up some hill in town - hard (asphalt/whatever) ground most of the way, but under trees away from traffic. Have to check it out in daylight etc :)
should probably take a break after the italian champs before getting back into serious training. don't want to bust my bones...

orienteering 51:15 [4] 4.5 km (11:23 / km)

Italian relays, again in Passo Coe - around 4.6km

Was within 5 seconds of the fastest time on my (mens short) course at the 8th control of 12 before blowing the next three and losing over ten minutes... passo coe gets me again :)

Saturday Sep 6, 2003 #

orienteering 1:55:43 [4] 11.8 km (9:48 / km) +600m 7:49 / km

Italian Champs - Passo Coe...
about 15 minutes of mistakes... splits show i died the last four controls or so... fantastic place... happy enough with the run. Sloppy in a few places though... a couple of the mistakes were completely unnecessary.
winner ran 1:23 or so. Mamleev would have run faster only the third control had been hidden.

Legs took a beating on the stony ground with the long course.

orienteering 16:25 [5] 2.57 km (6:23 / km) +115m 5:13 / km

Folgaria - Italian Sprint Champs.
1:7,500 map was good. First Sprint race so I was happy, although I lost a minute easily over the first few controls... 2:40 behind Mamleev's time of 13:45.

Ran a couple of controls with an Austrian guy which sped me up a bit (they ain't all as slow as matthias ;p ).
Los of fun!!
