2 PM

running 1:30:00 [2]

Tourist run in a gale through the old town. Halfway through I visited some cellars and had a couple of glasses of port. Nice.

Shocked by the CNN's coverage of the earthquake in Chile - ignorant, conceited, pompous and vacuous.

Pre-breakfast run in Porto.

running 37:30 [2]

Pottering about on the hill between the Uni and the river on the fringes of a rather impressive lightning storm. Thought I might be abounding with energy today but sadly this was not the case. Need more sleep :)

Note

Rest day, in the sense that I did a lot of work. Rainy in Porto.

orienteering race 39:36 [4] 6.7 km (5:55 / km)

NAOM Middle

Lovely area, another competent race. Picked up the map and saw a whole load of red lines criss-crossing a technical area, happy days.
Got stuck on a fence going to the first instead of going around to the gate, 15-20s lost.
Clean until leaving the 9th without a plan, lost 40 seconds at the stream in the green. Only a couple of minor hesitations and one dubious route choice and a couple of fences slowed me down between there and the finish. Maybe 2:30 total, being harsh. Good orienteering, not as difficult as it looked but loads of fun. Nice way to finish a tough ten days.

Not able to run all that fast, felt a bit like woc in hungary. J Lysell ran 32:16. Watch recorded a HR max of 211, have to download to the computer next week to see if it was noise.

--- Added later: It doesn't look like noise. It was on the run-in (which started halfway to the last control) and I was pushing... over 200bpm for the final 150m. And I thought my max was 208 :)

NAOM Long
WRE

Lundanes ran 70, the beast. Fun orienteering, bits of it were technical, large parts were golfcoursesque.

Didn't do a proper warm-up. Suffered the first half trying to run, then started to get a bit more into it. Anders Sk passed me at the second control already, despite not losing any time to that point. One-minute start intervals meant there were quite a few people around for the last few controls. Nearly out-smarted them, but got stuck on a fence. Oops.

Pleased I survived, I'm in much better shape than this time last year :)

NAOM Night Sprint

Felt like I was running, but I guess not, given my time. Winner ran 17:20.

Not as wonderful as I had hoped, but the buffet afterwards in the monastery was :)

Hats off to Jerker Lysell who ran through some olive green and got himself disqualified. Were it not for that, he would have won the overall competition. The Portuguese were rather surprised that he asked to be disqualified.

Note

Five races and seven training sessions in eight days. Still alive, mightn't be after classic and sprint tomorrow :)

The sun returned today.
10 AM

orienteering 40:00 [1]

Model event for NAOM

I'd been here the year before, so took it handy. Running on empty anyway, completely wasted.

termas de fadagosa

didn't push, did a few controls map-memory to make life interesting
3 PM

orienteering 15:00 [4]

Sprint training on a wonderful 1:4000 area, rocks, boulders, contours and the occasional bit of vegetation.
Mass start, me, OKO and a couple of Romanians, joint first with OKO :)
5 PM

orienteering 15:00 [3]

Castelo de Vide

Town sprint, the town itself was slightly reminiscent of Cervara di Roma, perched atop a spur, but it's a much simpler area (still v interesting). Slippy in places, so I didn't push hard everywhere. Fun fun fun.

orienteering race 1:29:30 [3] 9.7 km (9:14 / km)
ahr:176 max:191

MBN by IFKL, Grönsta...

considered quitting after 5 or 6 controls, felt better later on. Good evening's exercise :)

Jarla boys ran 75 mins, they could probably have got it down to close to 70 if they could navigate better ;p

Garmin distance 12.44 km, HR was higher than the last few races, which I guess is a good sign, although it could just be the after-effects of some gimp in Djursholm driving out of a junction in front of me, then stopping because there was a car coming in the opposite direction, leaving me to brake, skid and slalom my way to safety. First time that's happened to me.

Funny how the brain works fast in those situations. Reminded me a bit of earthquakes.

skiing 1:00 [3]

an hour from the ministry of funny skis and only a couple of falls. Täby Kyrkby.

Andrew showed once more why he is one of Ireland's top navigators.

orienteering race 1:29:00 [3] 8.0 km (11:08 / km)

Vinterserien,

must have been tired after yesterday, wasn't moving very fast. Made a big mistake at the third and a couple of other smaller ones. Need more sleep and a trip to Portugal.

orienteering 1:32:00 [3] 19.45 km (4:44 / km)

Street-O on Lidingö

For whatever reason, nobody was bothering their asses, except Anders S (82mins) and Anders H (a little after).
Nick and I swapped places a couple of times, then he was consistently ahead of me (50m+/-) until 10->11 where my route was a bit better. On my own from then until the finish...

Nothing too difficult, pushed more than I would if I were just out training... but not hard either. Calves are sore.

Spectated at the club sprint ski champs after lunch. JAM took out his main competitor in stunning fashion at the start of the final, leaving the result in little doubt.

Aaaagh

Second evening in a row without water. A pipe must have melted.

I should have gone training earlier. And done the dishes.

orienteering race 1:03:30 [3] 5.6 km (11:20 / km)

LUFFARLIGAN :)

Happy days. Arrived at about 10:30, tried to sign up for the "extra laang" course, a whopping 5.6km, but they wouldn't let me, not without an interview with the course controller first. He told me the snow was djup and that I was the first person to try signing up for the extra long course. I mustn't have been fazed, because soon enough I was out there.

It was balmy out, I nearly went without gloves, but that would have been silly. The buff was removed shortly after starting. I discovered early on what an easy time of it I had on Sunday, running in tracks for most of the course. This was physical. Only a couple of small mistakes and probably a dodgy route or two. Also not sure how hard I was pushing, still suffering from sleep-deficiency and I forgot to start the Garmin, oops. Anyhow, mins/km were way slower than Sunday.

Enjoyed it lots :)

Note

1st/4 ;)

Note

It was darkish on the streets of Stockholm this evening. Encountered this girl between my place and Skanstull and got a big long hug, almost longer than comfortable, which means pretty damn long, but it was nice anyhow. We proceeded to exchange pleasantries about what we had got up to that day, literature club and whatnot, all well and good. Then I asked her who she was. Oops. Then I asked her who she thought I was. Eric, apparently, and he may have a similar hat to mine.

Rest HR is in the mid fifties, need more sleep.
