orienteering race 52:20 [4] 7.6 km (6:53 / km)

meeting orientacao do centro, Pataias, Day 1
ran without compass, with borrowed SI card...

made five or 6 minutes of mistakes probably, which is pretty terrible given how piss easy this orienteering is... really good visibility... no warm-up, bad focus

MMerz ran another ridiculously fast race of 33:59, under 4:30/km

orienteering race 24:00 [3]

Alcobaça
Urban night race

Could have done with my headlamp for the first two controls in dark alleys. Couldn't tell green wasn't black so I didn't jump a wall near nine.
At the fortress misread north so I thought the controls were on the inner (upper) side of the fortress walls. silly me. Had to run to lights to correct. Hanna W overtook me again here. Hanna R was way behind :)

This was lots of fun. I think Ionut was the only on under 20 minutes. There was a pig roasting on a spit at the finish. Yummy.

orienteering 43:00 [3]

drove the mini-bus to Pataias in the morning. Then ran the model event. It was relatively straightforward, reminded me of 3j du Sud-Ouest terrain in France. Forested sand-dunes. Fast and not overly technical. Unlike the competition maps, this one was dodgy.

Went to the beach... shit happened

orienteering 55:00 [1]

Morning training near Castelo de Vide. Lovely area, open with rocks and occasional mild undergrowth again. Beautiful sunny day. Windy. Felt like Ireland in summer. Not too difficult at the speed I was going.

Note

Lunch-break was in Castelo de Vide itself, up in the old town. We walked around the urban stage of the Portugese sprint champs 2008. It was reminiscent of Cervara di Roma, that nice! Met Marianne Andersen and her group of bigger juniors on top of the tower. Good stuff. Ionut and Darek jogged the course, Wojteks and I walked half of it.

Still trying not to overdo it on my foot, I forwent the "forest" stage fo the sprint champs in Povoa i Medeis or some such, near to Castelo da Vide... a small area of open terrain with lots of controls, rocky outcroppings and scattered trees, mapped at 1:4000, a really technical sprint. Darek, Ionut and Kowal ran it as a mass start. Chaos ensued, much of it captured on video by Dwojak. It was a fantastic spectacle, way better than oriShow. Unfortunately the video camera was stolen too... aggh

jogging around a map near arez, open area, mad rock formations. good fun, spent a while trying to make sense of the map in some places.

orienteering 43:00 [1]

more easy training, this time in the afternoon at
Termas de Fadagosa

Didn't like the map as much. At first I thought there was more than one mapper, it was so inconsistent, but no. Still lovely terrain.

Sunbathed beforehand with feet in a stream to keep cool :)

bike 50 [3]

Stayed up till 4 writing a paper, so didn't get to the office until mid-afternoon. Didn't stay too long either :)

50 minutes on the torture-machine in KTH. Reading about perturbations of random walks.

Great!

back for more punishment

actually it was more bearable today, brought three maps, Länna Bruk (near Uppsala), Almeirim (POR) and one from Slovenia... planning/visualisation two ontrols at a time, rotating the maps

there were 5 minutes left over so I sped up, got the HR up to 194!

unfortunately it didn't hurt when pedalling on the exercise bike in kth-hallen, so I suffered for an hour.

First 30mins averaging 150 maybe, maybe less, then 25mins avg 165 followed by five+ at 180+, broke 190 briefly...

took a break after 30, was going to do some free-wieghts strength, but even the arm-up exercises had my foot annoying me, and I was too sweaty for the machines so I went back to the bike.

Nearly drowned in the lake when I finished.

There was a King Fredrik of Sweden,
Whose apppetite was always a-feedin'.
He persisted to tell Ma,
To serve him more semla,
Which she did till he died from his greedin'.

considered trying to find a pool to go aquajogging, but decided that was a stupid idea.
considered going to find an exercise bike in a gym, but decided that was a stupid idea.
read a draft of an article written by a couple of friends, found a stupid idea (or at least a substantial mistake).
finished refereeing an article having had what I hope is not such a stuupid idea.

no training but a productive (or maybe destructive) day.

Note

Foot sore. No NightO in KTH tonight.

Playing contact in the car on the way back on Sunday, Boris chose a word beginning with f.
I decided to test out the following theme tune:

Nobody got it. Somebody had a deprived childhood.

Then I tried a big ship with canons attached and poor Boris' frigate went up in smoke :)

Note

tired
rt foot sore and occasionally twangy after the skiing.

Felt ok until I tried doing maths in the afternoon. Brain was shattered. Persisted, because stuff had to be done. It hurt. Need more sleep.

skiing 1:20 [3]

GREEN LOOP

First time skiing this. Pity I didn't get out on it earlier. At one point I came to a "big" downhill with a bump towards the bottom. It looked scary so I bent my knees, tucked and sped up. Went over the bump, where pros would be jumping, and was still on my skis when I passed it, thinking that it wasn't so bad. Then I saw a collection of ass-craters just ahead (apparently one caused by mushy_pea !) at which point my skis magically flew from under me and I added to the collection...

Here's me powering up a hill, gaining on Boris all the time:

After an all-you-can-eat tasty lunch we drove back to Uppsala. We stopped off on the way to see the real reason I came back to Grönklitt again this weekend:

Then continued driving back. The car was consistently cold. Must get the radiator checked. Defrosted in Boris' place. Dropped Alex off to the airport bus. Returned for some more scrabble. Then drove back to Stockholm... unloaded the car, dropped the car off in Mälarhöjden, waited twenty minutes for the metro to take me back to my bed, where I slept...
