QOC Royal Romp Day 2 using Pine Grove area of Prince William Forest Park. Brown X, 4.0k, 165m. Similar to yesterday but with bigger hills/more climb. A bit less deadfall in the area the Brown courses used. Overcast, upper 30s. Very good course by Nadim with a couple of nice route choice legs.

Much better today then yesterday (not a stretch, the bar was pretty low). Only significant miss was about a minute on the first control. For 2-3 I followed the beeline to the road then took the road around, approaching the control from the northeast. I'm not sure this was faster than going straight but it saved some climb and made for an easy approach to the control. On 6-7 I stayed in the woods, using the stream running NE from control 4 to the junction, then pretty straight, trying to cross ridges at low points. The road option is pretty far out of the way although a route heading past 4 and using the segment of road past 2 might be good and save some climb.

Second in M70 and second on Brown X. Gained three places for two-day combined time, and ended up 6th in M70 for that metric.

Thanks to all the Quantico folks for a very well organized event. I had fun in spite of my tribulations on Saturday.

QOC Royal Romp on Oak Ridge map in Prince William Forest Park near Dumfries, VA. Brown-X course, 4.3k, 90m. Mostly open woods with excellent visibility. Some deadfall to navigate around and some patches of green but most everything was passable. Temperature in the 40s, sunny and some breeze, which wasn't an issue in the woods. Nice woods and a nice day to be out in them. A fine course by Ted Good and excellent organization by QOC.

Had a pretty good run, except for one control - spent more time on #6 than I did on the entire rest of the course (52:37 vs. 41:14 - Yikes!). Got off to the right going from 5 to 6, then made the terrain match what I saw on the map, until it didn't and there was no control flag where I was looking. Had no idea where I was and did some aimless wandering trying to match terrain features with the map. (I was southwest of 7.) Eventually started heading south and southwest to hit a trail or the finish area then spotted a boulder with a flag, which was my control #2 (another yikes!) Now relocated, I decided to finish the course, heading to 5 (which was on the way to 6) so I could try the 5-6 leg again. Actually made the same error as I had on the first try but caught it and corrected. It took me about 7 minutes for the leg this time but done correctly it would probably be a minute or so faster. Should've been in the mid-high 40 minute range. Surprisingly, wasn't DFL - plus I got to spend extra time in the woods.
