Note

Travel Day 1. Sightseeing in Carson City killing time until our 6:45p flight RNO-LAX, then 4 hours in LAX. By the end of the day, we were ~400mi further from our destination than when we started.

"Club Relay Champs" on Burton Creek map near Lake Tahoe. You could score points for your club without actually being on a team composed of members of the same club (huh?), so Phil Bricker, Jeff Saeger and I ran as a Men's Veteran team. The first leg of our course was forked, so course lengths were 2.5, 2.6 or 2.7 km with climb of 35m for all. Visibility was good but footing was trashy, mostly from fairly recent forest thinning. On the leg from 2 to 3, there were lots of unmapped brush piles, about 2m high and the feature at 3 was a 2m boulder (Jeff had run first and warned me about these).

I ran the 2.7k leg as third runner on the team. Fine to 1 and 2, mostly on compass. Drifted left on the way to 3 but knew I was drifting that way and spotted the boulder as I corrected. A bit off-line on my way to 4 (the pre-spectator leg control) but corrected when I could see the arena. The remaining small loop was pretty straightforward with much of it on trails. I probably could've been a minute or two faster. Lots of walking to get through the underfoot junkiness and shortage of oxygen at elevation.

Results are still pending (only one of several organizational glitches today so no one knows the Club winners). Our team was 2nd Mens Veteran, about 3:40 behind a COC team.

US Nationals Long on Sagehen map north of Truckee, CA. M65 course (would've been called Brown X at most other events). 4.6k, 162m climb (not sure how they determined that climb on a map with a 5m contour interval. Terrain was physical with lots of underfoot junk and vegetation, some significant climbs and one control placed in a steep, rocky area. Starts were delayed 90 minutes because of wildfire smoke, so I started about 12:40 so the sun was high in the sky.

Though designed as a long course, there was only one leg with route choice other than "head straight and check off features" (leg 5-6). Control 5 was on a steep, rocky, vegetated hillside and was inappropriate for a Brown course. Interestingly, eliminating control 5 would have created a nice route choice leg. Control placement at #8 was questionable as the flag was obscured by a couple of (unmapped) large logs.

My run was good through control 4. I lost about 5 minutes on control 5 when I searched among the undermapped rock in thick vegetation too early and too low. I let myself get distracted by others in the area who were also wandering about. Checked a bag on the way to 7 which was obviously not on a boulder and lost another minute.

Note that the GPS track includes part of the walk back to parking but time and distance in this entry have been corrected.

US Champs Middle Distance at Little Truckee Summit. M65, 2.3k, 75m. Open pine forest with an area of rock detail. Warm (80s), altitude (6500 ft), poor air quality due to wildfire smoke. Odd course design with the line from the start triangle to the first control passing through the final control circle. One group of controls so close together that there were no connecting lines. Course was a bit short fo middle distance, with fastest times about 20 min.

Not a very good run. Two significant errors of 1-1.5 min and a couple smaller ones. Lost contact on the way to 1 and used the finish area to relocate. Made a 90 degree error coming out of 8 and turned a 50 second leg into a >2 min leg. Not clean coming into 8. 5th in M65, 2:38 behind the winner.

I had worked a shift at the Start before I ran and hurried too much to make my assigned start time, even though that wasn't necessary.

US National Sprint Championships at Sienna College in Rocklin, CA. "Brown" course (all M65+ and F55+). 1.8k (shortest running distance), 25m climb. A very small, straightforward college campus map at 1:3000. Several OOB construction areas (which apparently changed frequently and made course setting a challenge).

Had a very good run. Overshot 11 by a little but saw the bag and corrected. Some hesitation to 12 after that bobble. First in M65 (16 sec ahead of Rick B and 22 ahead of Dave E), second overall on the course (4 seconds behind Dennis W).

From the splits it appears that the two finish boxes were not synched, with one being 6-7 seconds different than the other. Most people (including me) used the one which gave longer overall times. The run-in from the last control was 48m, so a final split of 10 seconds (rather than 16) seems reasonable for a full-speed run past both controls using SI Air. On my watch I got a total time of 11:23 vs. 11:31 official, starting the watch at the start beep and stoping it after passing the finish. I haven't found any instances where placings were affected, but this is unacceptable for a national championship event.

Wandering around the Model Event on the Sagehen map. Vegetation is over-mapped - only bigger, more obvious vegetation features will be useful at race speed (maybe). Mapped rock features may be hidden by vegetation. Compass and contours seem to be the way to go (although on the model map subtle contour detail could be hidden by vegetation).

Hike at Silver Falls SP, about 20 miles east of Salem, OR. Did a loop along the South Fork of Silver Creek to see two waterfalls (93' and 170' high). Both falls plunge off basalt ledges which are undercut so the trail passes behind the falls. Apparently hiking under rock wreaks havoc with the GPS track, giving me a climb of 418m which I've adjusted to the 400' which the trail guide says our hike was. Distance was also probably a bit shorter than measured. Temperature in the mid-80s but comfortable in the woods and along the stream.

Afterwards we drove to Klamath Falls, OR as we make our way to the Lake Tahoe area. Encountered wildfire smoke as we headed over the ridge east from Eugene, OR and it's now in the unhealthy range in Klamath Falls.
