Red course at Catalina SP, Day 2 of SWSW. 6.9k, 250m. Gnarly terrain, sharp vegetation and challenging navigation with most of the bags well obscured by the feature or vegetation. Sunny, upper 60s to low 70s.

OK run until the second to last control where I went brain dead, drifted way off line, relocated OK and then had trouble finding which of the many shallow reentrants the bag was actually in once I got close. Took almost 20 minutes on a 4 minute leg. Several other small errors which I corrected quickly. Lost 3 or 4 minutes on what was a pretty straightforward control when I headed towards an unmapped lone tree (=saguaro) rather than the mapped one. Despite my time losses, I did alright relative to the other 60+ guys who think they can still do Red courses.

Javelina Hustle on Box Canyon map. Short version - 5.7k, 240m. Mass start event with a 3 control box (visit in any order), a forked leg and finishing up with three controls on a line-O. Spur and reentrant terrain in open grassland (very little cactus but a few small scratchy plants). Pretty runnable except for the occasional areas of rocks partly obscured by grass. Great weather - sunny and upper 50s but feeling quite a bit warmer.

OK run. Lost about 3 minutes on #8 when I overshot it and then overshot again in the other direction after relocating. Another minute lost on 12 when I went one reentrant too far. Did the box 5-3-4, which seemed like the only reasonable choice. Took the left fork (8-10-11).

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Double Arch trail but only part of the way up to the arch as the trail was pretty steep and kind of gnarly. GPS track shows that we weren’t “almost there” when we turned around. So good decision.

Wandering around the desert in Papago Park near Phoenix. Spent lots of time stopped looking at birds at the ponds or giraffes and ostriches at the adjacent Phoenix Zoo, which is visible from a high point in the park. Sunny, upper 60s.
