Quantico Classic, Long Distance on Beaver Dam Run map on theQuantico Marine Base. Woods a bit more open and runnable than yesterday but otherwise similar. Overcast, upper 60s with wet woods from rain showers and drizzle.

A much better run than yesterday. Biggest time loss was on control 3 when I mistook an open marshy area (which looked like a pond) for a pond about 100m south. Had been right on line to hit the control but took an out and back excursion before figuring it out. Exited control 6 to the east rather than to the north and spent the better part of a minute understanding where I was in the terrain. Missed 12 (on the edge of the field) to the right a bit following Kristin, who I knew wasn’t on my course but was headed to the same control - probably 20 or 30 seconds there, but not noticed by AP.

First overall on Brown for the day.

Quantico Classic. Brown Middle Distance on Beaver Dam Run map, NE part. 3.8 km, 80m climb. Subtle ridge and reentrant terrain with lots of small point features (depressions, dot knolls and ammo boxes on posts). Some deadfall and a bit of thicker vegetation but with generally good visibility (but changing daily as leaves are emerging). Nice course by Vido Aleksiev.

A good run except for number 8. Was off to the left and spent way too much time searching the spur where my control 4 was, making all the parallel features match. Finally figured it out when I checked the code on the bag and realized it was my number 4. Lost about 12 minutes. Second overall on Brown and first in M65, but by a far smaller margin than it should have been.

Trail run at Thomas Iron Site but with a serious map reading component. Checking out various features on the o-map and getting into two areas I hadn’t been to before on the west side of the Saucon Creek. Mid 50s, partly sunny.

Note

Results from Crooked Compass show that I finished 14th overall out of 73 solos or teams. I was 10th in the Male Solo division out of 28. It looks like 16 teams or solos got to all of the controls. And unofficially, I think I was top M60+, although it would have been a pretty close race with kadley had he not made a clerical error.

Easy run to get the legs moving again. Headed south from the library. Upper 50s, partly cloudy.
