Sprint A at Ratlum Mountain (and WCOC picnic). A warm and sunny day - quite nice in the shade and good for sprinting. Thanks to Rhonda and Charlie for hosting another fine day of orienteering, food and socializing.
Format was a 2-person relay with each person running the two offerred sprint courses. I ran the first and third legs, so was in the initial mass start. Only Adam Bricker, Bill Duncan and I had Sprint A for the first leg. Adam and I flip-flopped a few times until he took a different "route choice" to #4. I bobbled #5 a bit, looking too close to the trail junction for the boulder. On the way to #6 I got on the wrong trail and got almost to the pond before I corrected (i.e. turned around) - that probably cost over a minute. OK the rest of the way. First to finish Leg 1, but the big guns were running legs 2 and 4.

Sprint B. A bit cleaner run. Straightish towards #1 but crossed the trail without seeing it. Used the house with the fence to judge my position and had to climb up a contour or two to get to the control. Missed the trail leading to #2 and lost some time going through the woods and debris along the edge of the field. Clean on #3 to #7. Going to #8 I took a little side trip down the unmapped trail coming off the bend just N of #7 for a loss of 30 seconds or so. OK the rest of the way, although it appears I was a little sluggish getting to #12 (went through the woods - maybe trails were faster).

Another round at Storrs Pond - Oak Hill, addressing some comments from the IOF Advisor and doing some additional tweaks of control locations. Got an early start (0730) so mostly avoided the heat - in the mid-80s when I finished just before noon. Visibility OK in most places in spite of full greenness, so it should be alright at NAOC time. Ferns are thriving, as are the mosquitos. Two (dog) ticks crawling around on me when I got back to the car - neither will suck blood again.

Green course at UNO local event (part of the NE Challenge Series). Good course set by Alar. Quite warm (in the 80s). Pretty much a disaster orinteering-wise. I kept losing contact 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the leg. Then it became a relocation exercise (actually did fairly well doing that, using the map and features to figure out where I was and only bailing to a trail once). Botched the execution of the long leg by missing the large marsh system I intended to follow. Easily 30+ minutes of extra time on the course which combined with the heat made for a long day. Had some unpleasant leg cramping later while riding in the car. Still a great venue and map.
