Orienteering race 1:24:08 [4] *** 8.6 km (9:47 / km) +255m 8:31 / km
spiked:13/13c shoes: VJ Falcons 4 (yellow)

Long distance course at Canadian Nationals on Mineral Springs. Very good course with two long legs, some short legs in technical detailed areas, and three intermediate length legs with really good route choice options.

Had a very good run, good enough to win M55-64. Lost about a minute on the leg from 11 - 12 drifting too far north and eventually took the intermittent trail which passes near control 2. For the first long leg (control 3) I took trails west of the bee line to the main N-S road (with the water stops along it) then headed west on the trail, between the big hills and up over the ridge along the line connecting 8 and 9. Said hi to Soupbone as he passed just before I got to control 3 (he was headed off to explore the nearby housing development). For 6-7 I headed out east to the road and took trails most of the way. 8-9 was mostly straight, along the south side of the ridge, along the south side of the pond, through the notch and then trail around to the control. Took a sub-optimal route to 11, climbing to go through the medium green on the spur with the OOB and then sidehilling to the control (best route looks to be to head west out of 10 then run trail to just beyond the junction and in - probably 1 - 2 min faster with less climb and less green).

Woods were a little wet due to earlier showers but no rain during my run. Footing was generally good (except for really soft marshy areas). Fairly warm with temp about 60F. Straight line distance 7.0 km with 340m climb (30m of it on the 100m leg from 12 - 13).

Orienteering race 40:01 [4] *** 3.6 km (11:07 / km) +103m 9:43 / km
spiked:13/13c shoes: VJ Falcons 4 (yellow)

Canadian Nationals Middle Distance on Mineral Springs map. Nice technical course with the first 7 controls in steepish, very detailed kame and esker terrain, then 5 controls in flatter, marshy terrain and finally an 8 contour climb to get to the final control. Very good visibility. Good footing except in some the marshes, which were pretty soft.

Was pretty careful to keep contact and had a very good run. Hit all of the controls but had some small time losses on a few of the longer legs spending too much time checking intermediate features. 3rd overall on Course 7a (M55-64) out of ~35.

SL distance 3.2 km. 170 m climb. Sunny and 60's.

Training event on Sulphur Springs map. Ten controls on the map but I visited one twice (from different directions). Slow and deliberate just getting familiar with the terrain. Great visibility, pretty good footing, some steep areas. Sunny and 60's - nice.

Orienteering race 16:20 intensity: (8:10 @4) + (8:10 @5) *** 2.83 km (5:47 / km)

Canadian Nationals Sprint at McMaster U. 2.7km straight line, one stairway worth of climb. Fun sprint with a bit more complexity than the sprint here in 2006. Several hesitations and a few small misses (e.g. checking the wrong tree on 9). Not sure I got the route choices right on 4 and 7, but just picked a route and went with it figuring that any differences would be small. Maybe could've been about a minute faster. Need to do speed work (and more O-sprints) if I want to do well at this kind of stuff. Was 6th in M55-64.

Running around the trails at Ooms Conservation Area (most of which are mowed grass running across fields). Low 60's, sunny with a breeze - doesn't get much better than this. Testing the ankle on pretty tame trails - it passed. Blister (from wearing the active ankle over the weekend) was OK too except at the very end. Three "friendly" dogs off-leash in this "leash required" area.

Walking 9:53 intensity: (9:20 @1) + (33 @2) 0.36 mi (27:28 / mi) +14m 24:30 / mi

Cool down walk about at Ooms.
