Woodland Hills Preserve in Lower Saucon Township. Mostly mowed grass trails but with some paved parts which are remnant golf cart paths from the area’s previous life as a golf course. A few muddy areas. A fine Fall day - mostly sunny and mid-60s.

Susquehanna Stumble. 14.4k, 385m (hah!) on Pine Grove Furnace map, starting at Piney Mountain Parking, near the top of the ridge. Upper 40s, mostly cloudy. Wet underfoot from rain yesterday and overnight but vegetation wasn’t too wet. Course by Mike Bertram with two windows with four controls each (to be taken in any order).

Good “race”, with TomO and tdgood much of the time and David Onkst early on. Missed on 3 when Tom went low and beyond it and I followed - recovered quicker but navigated to 4 first, which was only about 70 meters away. Confused a bit by the clearings going to 8 but knew when I hit the largest one so was OK. Road and trails from 8 to the first window, which was essentially a control pick in some very nice woods. Pulled away from Tom on the climb from 14 to 15 (16 contours up then about 15 back down) and caught Ted at 15. Missed the first control I tried for in the second window (the northwestern one) and ended up back on the trail to relocate. Decided to head east on the trail and get the northeastern control first, then loop the rest of the controls ccw. That worked OK but cost several minutes. Road and trail route wide left for 22-23. With Tom and Ted for 24 and 25 but then was able to outclimb them to 26 (a 300m leg with a 13 contour climb). Finished 5th overall.

Trails at Jacobsburg SP starting from the main parking area. Partly cloudy and 50F with a pretty good breeze. Cold enough that tights and gloves were a good idea.

US Nationals Long at Bishop Lake near Brighton, MI. Brown B, M65. 4.9k, 150m. Glaciated terrain with some (well-mapped) vegetation which affected visibility and speed. Some trails and several large marshes which were very useful for navigation. Very nice course by Igor Guskov. Overcast and mid 30s.

An OK run, hitting the controls pretty well but deviating from my planned route and correcting on several of them. Bad route choice to the first control (took the trail to the left out of the start triangle but after about 300 meters decided I needed to get over to the large marshes, which involved going through some sharp, green stuff). Going to 10 I went just to the right of the straight line and came out on the road at the portapotty (which we had passed on the way to the start) but wasn’t sure where it was along the road. Proceeded down the spur, making things match, but ended up at the control on the other Brown course. Figured things out pretty quickly but probably lost 1 - 2 minutes. Finished 2nd in M65, about 3 minutes behind Steve Tarry. 2nd overall on Brown B.

US Nationals Middle at St. Patrick’s Park near South Bend, IN. Brown B course - 2.9k, 40m climb - M65, F55, F60. Pretty much a sprint course with only about 4 moderately technical controls. Definitely favored the runners.

Lost 1.5 - 2 minutes on control 5 when I failed to take the time to carefully read the details in the control circle. A little off on 10 but spotted the bag from a ways off. Probably could’ve pushed harder on controls 8 to 11 in the woods but was focusing on hitting them accurately. Nice course for the area but I’m not sure I’d consider this championship terrain.

About 50F with light rain starting just about as I started and continuing through the race. Finished 4th in M65, 6 seconds back of Steve Tarry but almost 2:30 behind Charlie S. Also 4th (of 17) overall on Brown B.

At Whitehall Parkway, ranging from gravel roads and grassy fields to overgrown trails and a little bit of bushwhacking. About 60F and very breezy (less so in the woods).

Brown course at Wanaque. Using the map (mostly) from the 80s. Struggled with matching map and terrain. The 5m map contours are actually about 7.5m, so prominent terrain features may or may not show up. The area is very rocky and I never got to the point where I understood what rock was actually mapped. The map is actually pretty good - I just didn’t adapt. Biggest error was on #9 where I think the bag was hung on rocky ground near the edge of the circle rather then the described boulder field which was at the center of the circle. Carefully relocated and returned to where I had been and noticed other people at the actual control location, but 6 or 7 minutes later. Lost additional time on 4 other controls. Probably could’ve been about 20 minutes faster overall. 50s and mostly cloudy so nice running weather.

“Mini Plat-O” first course, the first 7 controls of the long course plus one additional control to keep us on our toes until the finish back near the Pineridge parking area. On the southern part of the Pineridge map which is very rocky and quite technical. 3.1k straight line with 90m climb. It was raining lightly at the start (transitioning to showers) and temperature was in the low 40s. Only three of us were doing this course (Janet, Doug Swank and me) but we mass started with the 9 or 10 people doing the long course.

With J-J to the first 4 controls with Doug and others not far behind. On control 5 I intended to head around the hill to the left but headed too far to the left - finally saw the hill an headed up it (verifying my location using a boulder which had been used as a control site in the A-meet three years ago). Misread the trails up top and spent some time searching boulders in a boulder field then spotted the cliffs which I had seen in the terrain on the map and headed to the control. Lost 4 or 5 minutes and J-J was long gone. Lost Doug on the way to 6 and was alone the rest of the way. Small misses in the circle on 2, 4 and 6.

Second part of the Mini Plat-O, a 3.3k “Green/Orange” course on the Grafton Lakes map. Much more runnable course with less rock underfoot and really nice, more open woods. Navigation was easier than the earlier course too. Rain had stopped except for a brief shower shortly after I started. Only time loss was about 30 seconds on control 8 when I got a little off to the left and hit the stone walls NW of the control.

Thanks to Phil, Sue and the rest of the EMPO volunteers who made the event happen!

Ontario O-Fest Sprint on Parc Mousette map in Gatineau, QC. Course 5 (M55, M18, F21,35,45) 2.6k, 15m. 1:4000, 2m contours. A combination of park, residential and (small) campus with most of the running on pavement or mowed grass. A few simple "traps" but mostly straightforward navigation. No significant errors, maybe some slightly sub-optimal route choices. Overcast and in the 50s F. 3rd in M55, 8th overall.

Ontario O-Fest Long course on Gatineau Park - Wakefield and Vorlage maps. Course 7 7.1k, 350m. Chase start based on results from Middle distance, so Bruce Glen started 4 seconds behind me. Started on the Gatineau Park map and had about 1km of simple navigation to transport under the highway and onto the Vorlage map. Overcast and low 50s.

Another so-so run. Off to the left heading to the first control (letting my 4-second chaser get far enough ahead that I never saw him until the finish). Struggled with map and terrain matching for much of the first map but managed to get through it with only about 4-5 minutes of time loss. Bad route choice and then loss of contact on the way to 13 cost me probably 5 minutes (had I taken the better route it would've been through terrain I was familiar with from the previous day - d'oh!) 5th for the course in M55 and I think 4th for the combined time.

Ontario O-Fest Course 7 (in M55 class - M45, F21, F35 and M18 were also on this course). A middle distance course - 4.0k, 150m on the Vorlage map (at Ski Vorlage near Wakefield, QC). A very good (and fun) course in challenging technical and physical terrain. Lots of rock features and hills but good visibility and runnability (when not too rocky). Some trails and of course ski trails. Map printed at 1:10000 - I used my magnifier more than usual (the course 6 map printed at 1:7500 made me jealous).

A so-so run with most of my errors due to not reading map detail and/or drifting off-line. Biggest time loss was on #7 when I mis-read the ski trails and took a bit to figure out where I was, even though I knew right where I was when I first got to the trails. Probably had about 8 or 9 minutes total time lost. Ended up 4th in M55 and 16th overall on the course. Course was probably about 1k longer than it should have been to hit the 30 - 35 minute winning time target.
