Red at Northfield Mountain. Prelude for Chase start later in the day. OK run after the first two controls. Distracted a bit by the photographer wandering along the trail with Judy on my way to 1. Headed up the stream parallelling the trail rather than the correct one leading to the control and lost ~3 min before figuring things out. Missed contol 2 on the first and second tries and finally got it on the third try, bouncing off the nearby trails. The feature was much more subtle in the terrain than it appeared on the map (it's a one contour reentrant but an index contour and is pretty broad). Probably lost ~4 min on this one. The rest went pretty well as I got real careful with following bearings and/or used very solid attack points. Ended up with the fastest time on Red as others also struggled. Had a 3 minute lead on Tim Parson for chase start.

SL 4.3km, counted climb at ~240 m. Cloudy and in the 60's. Later starters got rained on.

Chase start Red at Northfield Mountain. 3 minute head start on Tim so the strategy was to be safe and as clean as possible (and run hard). Spent a lot of time running on trails to hit solid attackpoints. Had a clean run except for hesitating and checking another bag on the way to 5. Left the trail a bit early going to 2 but didn't lose much time. Bob Lux started on Green at the same time and we shared the first three controls, which I thinked helped some. Shortly after control 6 I heard some noise from behind which was probably Tim, but he took a different route to 7 and never caught me.

SL distance 2.9 km. Woods were wet before we started and it showered early in my run. Fun event organized by Jeff and Judy - Thanks.

Note

Discovered another piece of Attackpoint coolness. Scroll down to near the bottom of your log and just under the "Search Log" function (on the right side), click on the "location search" link. It's labeled "beta" so I'm not sure everyone has it. And you need to have been entering GPS tracks for it to work.

Good stuff - thanks Kenny!

At Harvey Mountain SF in Austerlitz, NY. Ended up being about 55% trail and 45% dirt road. Started at the parking area just off East Hill Rd. and took the trail to the summit of Harvey Mountain (which is a wide open blueberry patch of several acres with some decent views). Continued on to the boundary marker at the NY-MA state line. The (marginal resolution) DEC map shows the trail looping around, so I kept going until it became obvious that the trail I was on was more or less following the state line, was heading downhill and was not going to get me back to my car. Headed back to the summit and took the road (gated so the locals can't just drive to the summit to party). I kept looking for a trail heading off the road but never found one so ended up on road back to the car. Even though it was a road, it was still pretty nice running (only one vehicle went by). And a perfect day for running, upper 60's and sunny.

Run in the Albany Pine Bush, starting at the Blueberry Hill East trailhead. Trails have been rerouted some since I was last here quite a while ago. The intent is to have the trails mostly follow the perimeters of the various parcels of the Pine Bush Preserve to reduce "fragmentation" so the wildlife has larger pieces of environment to live in, which apparently they prefer. The Pine Bush is a rare ecosystem and there is a significant effort to restore and preserve what hasn't already been developed. Unfortunately, part of the "development" is the City of Albany landfill, which is still active and is huge.

It was quite hot when I ran, nearly 90F, but the dew point was about 60F so it wasn't too opressive. Fortunately clouds blocked the sun for much of the time. (Who knew that 2pm wouldn't be a good time to run when summer-like temperatures are predicted.)

Saw three sizable patches of blue lupines starting to bloom but no sightings of Karner Blue butterflies (for whom blue lupines are their only food source).

Red course at Ansonia, set by Rich N and Jim H. Nice course on a great map (except for the area near the S/F where the barberry is winning). A few good long legs and plenty of fun technical stuff. And made even better by the weather, which was sunny and low 70s.

An OK run with a few avoidable errors. Missed #1 high and spent some time checking large boulders beyond the control. Visited #5 before #4 when I misread which clump of boulders I was seeing (#4 might be described as a vague feature (shallow reentrant) in an undermapped area). Probably lost about 4 minutes on each of those. Lost a minute on #6 checking the wrong stone pile and another minute on #12 misidentifying which stone wall I was seeing after crossing through the barberry jungle. Did well and had fun with 8-9-10-11 in the technical area in the eastern part of the map.

SL distance 6.2 km.

Hanging bags at Grafton, mostly for the Orange and yellow courses. Then spent the next several hours on my feet while people ran around in the woods. Everyone came back. Plenty of help with control pick up so I didn't have to get any of them (Thanks to Phil and Sue H-T, Will, Gabor, and Janet. ) Weather turned out much better than predicted with a shower early and then dry with the sun appearing by mid-afternoon.

Red course at Earl's Trails. Very nice course set by Phil making good use of all the challenges of the area (big hills, complex trail network, and areas of rock and contour detail). Plenty of route options on even the shorter legs. Woods are fairly open amd visibility was good even with leaves mostly out. And the weather was just about perfect, 60s, sunny and low humidity.

One big error, on the first control, and several smaller misses mostly in or near the circle. Probably 10-12 minutes of "bonus time" on the course. Was fairly successful keeping track of (about) where I was among the complexity of trails. Fortunately, few if any new trails have appeared since the area was mapped. Straight line distance 6.8km, 330m climb.

Thanks to Phil for setting the courses (and lugging water out onto them) and Jim P for running the epunch.

Billygoat at Baldwin Hill, near Ashburnham, MA on a warm (upper 70's) and sunny day. Nice course set by JJ with several skip options and plenty of technical orienteering.

Got a shirt, my 20th! An OK run with one big miss (#3), a few small misses (#4, 7 and 8) and some sub-optimal route choices. On the way to #1 I followed a crowd directly into the woods rather than the trails around. For 10-11 I took the trail ssw from 10 to the stone wall, then headed across the south part of the big hill right by 18 (which is a bit ironic since I chose to skip 18 later in the course). As I was on my route from 17-19, I went west and north of the large pond rather than take the trail.

I flip-flopped with Bernie Breton for most of the course, was with a pack including Paul Bennet, Phil Bricker, Bernie, Anne Wilkinson, and some others from 11 to about 14 and then used Anne and others to lead me into 16 and 17. On the way from 17 to 19 I picked up Peter Zakrevski and helped him in to the next few controls (he was still able to move faster than me so took off after we entered the field headed to 22). Bernie appeared at the corner of the field having skipped 21 and he and Peter "raced" to the finish while I continued my slog.

I dealt with the heat reasonably well, carrying a Camelback with water, drinking at a couple of the water stops and drinking 12-15 oz of electrolyte solution at the aid station (also ate half a banana and some cookies). Carried a couple of Gu packets but only ate one at about 45 minutes in. No incapacitating cramping but the legs reminded me a few times that they weren't happy. Mostly walked from about 11 on except on trails or in the field near the end.

Finished 30th overall, 4th M60. Straight line distance 13.2 km with 510m climb. ~12.8 km skipping 18.

EMPO local event at Hayes Nature Park in Clifton Park (1:5000, 2.5m). Did the Orange course so as not to overdo before the Billygoat tomorrow. The Orange course was "get all in any order" with 21 controls distributed through the quite small area (~0.3 km^2). About half the controls were used on the White or Yellow courses, so were near or on trails and most of the rest weren't far off trails either. The area is all wooded with some marshy areas so there was a significant amount of off-trail running.

Manual punching was used, so I think I spent as much effort thumbing the punch card as thumbing the map. Managed to hit all the controls with a reasonable route (i.e. didn't miss one and have to fully traverse the map to get it). Warm and muggy.

Control order: 215-206-221-211-210-202-207-217-203-201-227-219-231-220-209-216-204-213-205-214-226

EMPO local event at Five Rivers EEC. Time-O with 21 total controls but with only 7 available for scoring in each 30 minute window. Interesting way to get lots of distance on a fairly small map (and a couple of areas of the map weren't even used). Quite wet and muddy underfoot and lots of trail running on this map. One trail was OOB since it was so muddy but it was OK to cross it or run in the woods next to it. Course involved multiple crossings of the stream through the area (5 times on bridges, 5 times wading) plus plenty of other slogging through standing water. Visibility was good since since only a few species have leafed out (honeysuckle?). Some prickly vegetation in places.

A fairly intense run both physically and mentally. One of the more challenging aspects was being sure to find on the map all of the controls for a particular window before route planning. We had a minute to look at the map before starting which was mostly used to plan the loop for the first 30 minute window. Got done with the loop in about 27 min, so had 3 "free minutes" to get to the first control of the second time window (#50, which was my "non-spike", mostly because the features in the terrain were not as distinct as what was shown on the map - it ended up being a "bag in rough-open field"). Foutunately, from that control to the next was mostly a road run so I was able to plan the second loop. Got done that loop with a couple of minutes to spare. Just kept plugging for the third loop, making sure I was getting progressively closer to the finish area in case I ran out of time. Ended up getting all of them with a minute to spare.

Weather was overcast, breezy and in the low 50's, so very good for running, but a tad unpleasant for the meet workers. Thanks to Frank Boscoe for setting the course and Phil H-T for working the epunch system.

Control order: 31-32-33-34-35-36-37-50-52-53-58-57-54-55-102-107-103-104-106-100-105

WCOC event at Macedonia Brook SP, Green course (5.7km, ~270m climb by my count). Map offset printed at 1:15000 with overprinted course (plus some overprinted vertical green where the barberry has taken over). Visibility excellent and runnability very good in most places. Nice course by George and Lyn with a set of 7 short control picky legs (mostly to charcoal platforms) after we climbed to the top of the ridge.

Would have been a decent run if not for one leg (10-11). Skirted the barberry but stayed between the trail and barberry rather than go all the way to the trail. Stopped short (forgetting it was 1:15 perhaps) and ventured into the barberry for a bit before bailing to the trail and properly locating myself. Probably lost ~7 min. This leg was similar to one on Red, but the Red leg started from the pit (Green #9). Off a little bit on a couple of the short legs but spotted the flag and corrected. Nice running weather with temperatures around 60F. Thanks George and Lyn.

Map scale unstated. No magnetic north lines but the courses did not follow the IOF/OUSA rule that control numbers be oriented to north. Route choice was minimal. I think I mispunched on this one.
