Hiking 1:27:48 [1] 6.91 km (12:42 / km) +36m 12:23 / km
shoes: NB 573 Trail Shoes

Walking in New Holland, mostly on paved roads or sidewalks. Legs still sore so tried to get the blood flowing a bit. Right thigh bruise still tender.

Hickory Hop Rogaine, 6-hour solo. Shades of Death map with a map exchange, 25 controls on each map. Rhododendron, mountain laurel, small rocks, medium rocks, big rocks - all of it excellently mapped. Lots of bashing through green and lots of compass use but I got pretty good at reading light vs. medium vs. dark green and picking up subtle features. Found all the controls I tried for. Perfect weather - sunny, 50's - 60's and breezy.

Fell a couple of times, bruised my right thigh about 1.5 hours in and that was bothersome the rest of the day. Did 18 controls on the first map, 15 on the second, switching maps at just under the 3 hour point. Started to feel a bit of cramping just as I started the second map, so walked a lot more from then on.

Finished 3rd Veteran (50 - 64) and 13th overall in 6-hour solo category with 1880 points (2775 max possible).

Control order - 63,75,65,45,77,67,69,59,79,57,43,37,61,55,73,31,53,51,80,34,44,60,52,46, 50,64,48,70,62,38,78,54,40.

Excellent course and organization by Sandy Fillebrown and crew.

Another humid day but not too hot (low 70's). Threw in a few surges on the way back.

At Hand Hollow Conservation Area. Warm and very humid (there had been a shower in the area just before I ran). Temps in the 70's so quite summery. Many bird sightings - Canada Geese and family, swallows, robins, an oriole or cardinal (from a distance). Audible on a woodpecker. The heron rookery doesn't appear to be active.

Orienteering warm up/down 5:40 [2] 0.52 mi (10:58 / mi) +11m 10:17 / mi

Warm up run at Stratton Brook SP.

Orienteering race 1:04:53 intensity: (20 @1) + (3:52 @2) + (14:16 @3) + (32:32 @4) + (13:53 @5) *** 7.51 km (8:38 / km) +106m 8:04 / km
ahr:147 max:165 spiked:15/17c shoes: VJ Falcons 4 (yellow)

Red course at Stratton Brook SP (near Simsbury, CT). Lots of trail running with short plunges into somewhat crappy woods (mostly due to an ice storm a few years ago and not really represented by the map). Made too many choices to cut through the woods rather than take trails to the closest point. Missed on 6 and 9 which were both questionable features (as were a few others). Some of the bags were hidden in vegetation or deadfall. Lots of good route choices. Cloudy and 60's with some sprinkles after I finished. Probably could've been about 5 minutes faster by spending less time in thicker stuff.

Note

Reviewed my log to see how many times I've climbed the hill at Moreau (and come back down). Sixteen times for the most recent event (some of those carrying water or control stands) and seven times for the Billygoat. I didn't go back to count for the 2010 event, but I'd guess at least 15. So somewhere between 30 and 40 trips.

Road Run 29:49 [3] 3.33 mi (8:58 / mi) +55m 8:31 / mi
shoes: NB878 - #11

Back to road running now that I only have one full time job (for another 6 weeks). A bit of a slog - need to rebuild the base then do some speed stuff. 70 and sunny.

Waking up controls at Wakpominee in the NE corner of the map. Struggled with one of them.

Picking up controls at Wakpominee (a different, easier set than I woke up). Was able to drive close to most of these so distance is bogus (but I left it in there because I'm sure I covered at least that much distance doing other stuff when the watch wasn't on).

Field Checking 2:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (24:00 / mi) +300m 20:14 / mi

Up the hill at Moreau twice today! First time at about 0700, hanging streamers to the start. Then wandered around setting various things in place (the start triangle marker, the finish stands, the last control, tape to try to keep people from wandering out of bounds, and more). After the control wake-up team returned, I took a pretty direct route down to the results tent to download SI sticks and visit with the crew at the pavilion. Hung out for a while, then took the bus back to the trailhead lot to prep for control pick-up. Hiked up the hill again to wait for last finishers and control gatherers. Lots of help with pick-up with special thanks to Ali, Alex, Hannah and Tereza who jogged back up the hill to help. Finally, down the hill carrying 73 bags and a case with 73 SI units (with Doug's help). Out of the woods by 5:30! Done!!

Field Checking 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Kind of a "rest" day. Walking around Camp Wakpominee checking things, watching people sprint, then picking up some controls (although some of that involved using a car, including picking one up without even getting out).

Field Checking 2:00:00 [1] ** 2.0 km (1:00:00 / km)
spiked:44/44c

Hanging Sprint controls at Wakpominee. A pleasant day to be in the woods, but the bugs are beginning to be bothersome (part of the Adirondack Adventure!). Nice to set controls when you can drive to within about 100 meters of every control. Still had to get out of the car (I once hung a White course control from the car).

Field Checking 1:20:00 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (40:00 @2) ** 5.0 km (16:00 / km) +200m 13:20 / km
spiked:8/8c

Up to the S/F area at Moreau (what's one more time up the hill?) to show the Start and Finish crews the area. Lugged some stuff. Then hung some bags for the White and Yellow courses so I don't have to go up tomorrow. Estimated distance and time.

Field Checking 4:31:50 [2] *** 11.38 km (23:54 / km) +288m 21:13 / km
spiked:20/20c

Climbed a hill, stuck some posts in the ground, hung some streamers in the woods, hauled a couple of gallons of water, set up some water stops, stuck some more sticks in the ground, got sprinkled on, hiked back down the hill. Saw more wildlife than usual - two frogs, one chipmunk, one eft, two humans, one dog. Also, as is usual for Moreau visits, heard pileated woodpeckers but didn't see them. Three days to go.

Field Checking 6:18:14 [2] *** 9.13 mi (41:26 / mi) +363m 36:52 / mi
spiked:52/52c

Wandering around the woods putting stands in the middle (I hope) of circles on a map. Actually placed 33 stands, the rest were double checks on previously placed stands. All that are left are for the White or Yellow courses.

Also moved some water from Point A to Point B, since no one was going to visit Point A - unfortunately Points A and B were not close together, nor were they connected by flat terrain.

What an absolutely fabulous day weatherwise - sunny and low 70's. Doesn't look like the pattern will hold through the weekend, but current predictions don't look too bad either. Looking forward to being done.

Saturday May 4, 2013 #

Hiking 1:00:00 [2] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Moving water up the hill at Moreau. Plus some wandering around the terrain to see how much water was in the marshes and to see if any of the cliffs had moved. Sunny and 75 - quite nice.

Note

This A-meet stuff consumes a lot of time and energy. I think I'm in good shape but there's still plenty to do. I'll use it as my excuse for not working out, but then my body is still recovering from the beating I gave it at West Point, so I probably wouldn't have done much anyway.
