Snowshoe 42:12 intensity: (31 @1) + (1:42 @2) + (27:44 @3) + (12:15 @4) 3.4 mi (12:25 / mi) +85m 11:31 / mi
ahr:140 max:154 shoes: Dion Snowshoes

At Hand Hollow starting from the lower parking area. Went to the west side of the big pond. Eight or so inches of snow but almost all of the trails I ran had been skied on, so no significant trail breaking. Temperature around freezing but felt colder at the start since the sun had dropped below the hill (started at about 3:30). Snow soft but good footing. Saw two other people (on foot) but no other wildlife.

Road Run 5:00 [3] 0.5 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: NB 573 Trail Shoes

Warm up jog up the road to the start. Also did a bit up the trail and back after I put snowshoes on.
11 AM

Snowshoe race 32:59 intensity: (6 @1) + (14 @2) + (22 @3) + (25:42 @4) + (6:35 @5) 4.6 km (7:10 / km) +72m 6:39 / km
ahr:153 max:163 shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Snowshoe race at Pine Ridge XC Ski Area in Poestenkill, NY. Advertised as being 6.2 km, so the end came a lot sooner than I expected (not that I would've paced any differently). All on groomed ski trails but footing was a bit soft, so pretty hard work. Gently climb for the first km or so, then rolling hills and finally back down to the finish. Good temperature for racing at about 28F. Finished 20th out of ~51. Most of the usuals from the WMAC snowshoe racing crowd were there.

Snowshoe 4:07 intensity: (2 @1) + (24 @2) + (2:36 @3) + (1:05 @4) 0.55 km (7:27 / km)
ahr:138 max:146 shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Cooldown jog on the trail paralleling the road from Finish back to the Lodge/Parking.

Snowshoe 29:41 intensity: (29 @1) + (3:12 @2) + (18:36 @3) + (7:24 @4) 2.1 mi (14:08 / mi) +34m 13:27 / mi
ahr:138 max:150 shoes: Dion Snowshoes

On snowshoes in the back yard (and a couple of neighboring ones). Figured I'd better do some snowshoe training before I race tomorrow. About 4-5" from Thursday's storm so no issues with breaking trail. About 32F.

After a morning of sustained 30mph wind and rain, it suddenly stopped, some blue sky appeared and it was 47 degrees. Time for a run! Lots of debris down and a tree on the wires just down the road, so power was out (and not restored until almost 11pm). No rain while I ran but it was cloudy again and sprinkled some about 5 minutes after I finished. Excellent timing!

At Moreau checking on some vetter feedback and improving the mapping in a few areas. Visited three of the Yellow course controls which I hadn't been to yet. Been to all of them finally (pending course consultant and vetter feedback).

Field Checking 8:30 [1] *** 0.37 km (22:58 / km) +1m 22:40 / km

Tracing the edge of a marsh for mapping improvement.

At Moreau, after field checking. Started at N end of Mud Pond, climbed partway up the hill, dropped back down to the lake then back to the car via the other side of Mud Pond. A thin film of ice on the lake. Lots of beaver-gnawed trees at the north end of the lake. Saw two other people running on the trails. Temp in the 30's and cold (to start) since the sun had already dropped behind the hill. Passed lots of formerly-used control sites (mostly in the 2010 A-meet).

Note

Work is interfering with training. Must implement a plan to fix.

Field Checking 3:42:23 [1] *** 7.98 km (27:52 / km) +254m 24:03 / km

Wandering around at Moreau. Re-working the finish to make the run in just "gnarly" rather than "really gnarly". :-) Also checking most of the White and Yellow controls. Mostly cloudy and low 40's. Ran out of daylight so didn't get to everything I wanted to. May not be back out until Spring.

Orienteering race (Night-O) 1:10:21 [3] *** 4.32 km (16:18 / km) +122m 14:17 / km
spiked:7/13c shoes: VJ Falcons 4 (yellow)

RHINO. Foggy but comfortable temperature (45 ish). Knew where I was most of the time but knowledge of the map saved me a few times. Need a better light and more practice than once a year to do night-O well - still had fun. And great after-O socializing and food. Thanks Rhonda and Charlie.

ahr:138 max:161 shoes: Scarpa Spark Trail Shoes

In Albany Pine Bush, starting from Madison Ave. Extension. Ran a few trails that I haven't been on in a while and did some in the opposite direction than I usually do, so things were "new". Trails are wonderful here - no rocks, a few roots, mostly packed sand. Overcast but temperatures in the upper 40's so very nice for running.

Overcast, 32F, an inch of snow on the ground. Must be December.
