At Trap Pond State Park (near Laurel, DE), home of the northernmost naturally occurring stand of bald cypress trees. Warm and muggy but surprisingly few bugs. Includes stops to look at turtles, toads, birds, cypress trees and to eat ice cream.

CNYO Rogaine at Pharsalia WMA with Janet as team Ramble On in 6 hr division. S/F from the same area as 2004. Visited 11 control sites (tried for another but missed and didn't bother trying to re-attack since it was only 31 points). Might have been able to get another but fumbled around finding #65 which is best described as "bag in the woods somewhere near a wall which is prominent on the map but far less so in the terrain" (Actual description was "SE inside corner of shallow hill" - WTF?) Scored 551 points (2437 available) which was good for second overall among 6 hour participants. 1st coed team. Nearly perfect weather - partly cloudy, dry and 70's. A few FDF's but not really an issue.

Hand Hollow Cons Area from the upper parking area. Ran to the pond in the eastern portion of the area (across Rt. 9) and back. A few hills. About 80F but less humid than it's been.

At Pittsfield SF. Started and finished at Lulu Brook Pond, which just happens to be a swimming area and which I put to good use for my "cooldown". Air temp was probably about 90 with some humidity, but running in the woods was quite tolerable. Had to do a bit of relocation to get back to the car.

Vacation over. Time to start running again. Upper 70's but muggy - we're not in Iceland anymore.

Hiking 2:28:05 [1] * 7.62 km (19:26 / km)

Hike in Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park (in the southeast part of Iceland) to Svartifoss waterfall and an overlook of the Skaftafellsjökull glacier. The waterfall is not as large as some of the others in Iceland, but is notable because it tumbles over basalt columns. Also visible was Hvannadalshnjúkur, the highest point in Iceland (2100m +).

Ice-O Middle distance course on Elliðaárdalur map, near Reykjavik. A wooded park (for Iceland) with a heavy trail network. 1:7500 with 2m contours and I did not adjust well so I had a less than stellar run. Overran the first two controls and struggled a bit reading the vegetation, so I wasn't relocating quickly. Misread trails on #14. Total of about 12 minutes of errors and ended up 6/11 in M50. Straightline distance 3.7km. Overcast and 50's at the start but the sun came out later.

As with all of the events of the Ice-O, this one was well organized with all the amenities. I highly recommend the Ice-O event as an excuse to visit Iceland (although you don't really need an excuse - Iceland is worth the visit even without orienteering while you're there).

Orienteering race 59:21 [4] *** 5.37 km (11:03 / km) +85m 10:14 / km
spiked:14/17c shoes: VJ Falcons 4 (yellow)

Long event for ICE-O. Vífilsstaðahlið map, located about 15 min from Reykjavik. Terrain is mostly lava with some thick vegetation in places which made for a physical course. The vegetation is "birch"' with the shape and consistency of mountain laurel, nearly impenetrable spruce, or lupines (an invasive species which is thriving and is thick and mid-thigh high). Fortunately we were done with the thick stuff after the seventh control and the rest of the course was mostly a control pick in a fairly flat lava flow. Course was more middle distance character, but that's what I was expecting and was quite fun in the second half.

Finished 2nd in M50 out of 12, 1:19 back of first (beat a bunch of Europeans, but I suspect most of the hot shots are at WMOC). A drizzly day to start so things were wet. Rain had stopped before I ran and the sun peeked out for a bit afterwards.

Straight line distance 4.2k.

Sprint in Reykjavik (Miðbær Háskóli Íslands map. A mix of park, city, and campus sprint. Lots of fun. About 90 sec lost, with the biggest error overrunning 8 and chasing another bag for probably 40 sec. 5th in M50 (of 12) but 7 seconds quicker would've put me in 3rd. Overcast and in the 50's (a summer day in Iceland). Straightline distance 3.0k.

Pittsfield State Forest. Up Lulu Brook Trail, Wm. Berry Trail to Taconic Crest, South on TCT to Tower Mtn, Over Pine Mtn, Down Shadow Trail (the downhill of Curly's snowshoe race), and some looping around the mountain bike trails in the flats to finish up. A dip in Lulu Pond to cool down and get the sweat off (actually just in up to my knees since it was pretty cold). Temperatures in the 80's but OK in the woods.
