Field Checking 7:41:34 [1] *** 10.68 mi (43:13 / mi) +519m 37:33 / mi

Wandering (and wondering) around at Moreau. Checking controls for White, Yellow and Orange courses for both days. Plus some advanced control scoping. Visited ~45 points! Fabulous weather - sunny, dry, 70's. Didn't do the CNYO Rogaine (which was this weekend) but this came close.

Discovery: Saw a bird which looked and acted like a great blue heron but was all white (with yellow legs). Didn't have binoculars so couldn't get a good look at all the details. Apparently there's a "great white heron" variant, but sightings of them outside of Florida seem to be rare. There was also a more normal looking great blue. Both were feeding in Mud Pond, the northernmost lake/pond on the Moreau Map.

6 PM

Road Run 37:53 intensity: (32:07 @3) + (5:46 @4) 4.41 mi (8:35 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

66N, Albany Tpke, Howes, Pitt, 66S. Tempo pace for three relatively flat segments of about 0.25 mi each (total 0.8mi, ~7:10 avg pace). Upper 70's with humidity a bit lower.

Spotted (and heard) a red-tailed hawk surveying recently cut fields - easy pickin' rodents perhaps. Also saw him/her on Tuesday's run - may have a nest nearby. Other wildlife spottings later in the evening in the back yard: gray fox, deer (not unusual), three or four bats at dusk.

Road Run 37:23 [3] 4.27 mi (8:46 / mi) +86m 8:15 / mi
shoes: NB878 - #9

66N, Bacchus, Pratt, 66S. Mostly flat for first two miles, hilly 3rd mile then down the big hill early in mile 4. Cooler (upper 70's) but still muggy. It looks like they may be starting work on the bridge over the Kinderhook Cr. which has been reduced to one lane (with traffic lights) for more than two years. Yeah!!!

Field Checking 3:04:27 intensity: (2:34:27 @1) + (30:00 @2) *** 5.27 mi (35:02 / mi)
shoes: NB 874

Wandering around the northeast part of Moreau checking out trails, one newly added to the park map (which existed but doesn't have trail markers). Also found a mtn bike trail and GPSed it. Scoped out another viable descent route and some potential control sites. Contour lines will click off pretty fast on the downhill! :-)

Note

Travel day 2. Flying GEG-MSP-BDL then drive home. Generally smooth. Home ~1am local time - back to humidity.

Friday Jul 9, 2010 #

Note

Travel day. Driving from Golden, BC to Spokane. Following the Columbia River to its source just north of Canal Flats and then crossing to the Kootenay River drainage passing through a very broad, flat saddle. Stopped in Cranbrook for lunch and a Starbucks fix then back to the US (10 - 15 min at the border).

Hiking 2:51:01 [2] 9.35 km (18:17 / km) +250m 16:08 / km

Hike in Yoho NP from Emerald Lake (where the tourist buses can drive to) to Emerald Basin (where they can't). Spectacular place at the base of an 800m headwall (meters, not feet) with several snowmelt waterfalls and a glacier or two.

Hiking 38:36 [2] 1.75 km (22:04 / km) +100m 17:10 / km

A "cooldown" hike to Hamilton Falls (from the Emerald Lake parking lot). More climb than we expected and no really good viewpoint of the
falls. Interesting nonetheless since the water falls sideways recessed in a slot (picture needed!).

Wednesday Jul 7, 2010 #

Hiking 2:30:00 [1] 7.0 km (21:26 / km)

Several short hikes in Glacier and Revelstoke NPs the most vigorous of which was the 1 km (each way) from the parking area to the summit of Mt. Revelstoke (after a 23 km drive with ~1600 m climb). Spectacular stuff! Hot in the valleys, comfortable on the top.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] *** 2.0 km (30:00 / km)
7c shoes: NB 874

Controlling exercise at IOF Advisor Clinic. We visited seven sites in the field to determine what was wrong with them (choice of site, bag placement, control description, etc.). A nit-picking exercise - we excelled! :-)

After six days of injury-free racing over the previous week, I managed to strain my left calf muscle during this physically low key exercise. WTF? Still sore three days later (Friday) but improving. Travel day tomorrow, so more rest.
