At Little Lehigh Parkway. Mostly exploring mountain bike trails away from the wide, gravel paths right along either side of the creek. Never knew these existed - found them on a mountain bike trail app. Very warm (86F) and humid.

At Jordan Parkway, mostly on mountain bike trails with lots of twists and turns. Rocks, roots and some small logs but all pretty tame. Temperatures in the mid-80s. Several quick stops and dismounts but no falls.

At Green Lane - prepping for an event in August. Hot, thick woods, map needs some updating. Noticed several recently-downed large trees (creating 2-3m rootstocks, which likely will not get mapped).

Sprint 1 at Green Lane. Mostly zig-zagging across the open area on the far side of the lake. In the 80s and sunny. Bobbled number 4 a bit by not avoiding a rough open area and coming into it from the wrong side.
6 PM

Nolde Run for the Ages trail race. Starts are handicapped by gender and age, so the M65-69s get to start 17 minutes ahead of the 20-29 men (and 18 minutes behind the one 75+ woman who ran the race). Nicer weather than last year, low humidity and upper 60s at the start, climbing into the low 70s. Sunny but most of the race is in the woods so plenty of shade.

My race went pretty well - I finished 17th of 187 overall, 2nd M65-69 (maybe 3rd, but I think they gave 1st M65 to an M60 guy - have to check the results.). And my time was about 2:30 faster than last year on the same course. Edit: Results show me 2nd M65-69, 59 seconds behind 1st, 41 seconds ahead of 3rd - pretty tight race.

Encountered a long-time MIA orienteer also running the race, Mike Ball, who’s focus is now on doing a Marathon in every state (he’s up to 47).

Wandering around the Penn State Berks campus checking out control locations, etc. for a sprint event on July 17. Really nice area with some nice sprint challenges. Plus, it’s mapped to ISSOM standards (or at least what the standard was in 2017). Mostly sunny, in the 70s and less humid than it’s been.
4 PM

Road Run 32:08 intensity: (12 @0) + (5 @1) + (9 @2) + (23:17 @3) + (8:25 @4) 3.27 mi (9:50 / mi) +38m 9:29 / mi

Had planned to run on the canal path from Gring’s Mill Park (adjacent to PS Berks) but the trail was under water (swiftly flowing water). So I ran around the campus, mostly on pavement but some on grass. Carried the o-map but just ran, rather than doing any sprint practice. Nice running with the humidity lower.

Sprint 1 at Fort Washington SP. 2.4km, 40m. Didn’t start my watch, so no track. Staightforward course with route choices on most legs. Mostly a clean run - may have lost a little time on 8 due to route choice. Had some trouble finding the start triangle and seeing lines and circles since there is a lot of green and yellow in most of the area we used. Mostly sunny and in the 70s.
5 PM

Orienteering race 19:11 intensity: (41 @2) + (4:48 @3) + (10:25 @4) + (3:17 @5) *** 2.56 km (7:30 / km) +39m 6:58 / km

Fort Washington SP - Sprint 2. 1.8km, 43m. Four regular sprint controls, 16 micro-O controls, then 4 more regular sprint controls. The regular sprint controls were a bit trickier than Sprint 1 and I lost time on 1 and 3. Small bobbles on several controls in the micro but no disasters - I have lots of room for improvement in this type of O.
6 PM

Orienteering race 9:04 intensity: (18 @1) + (1:29 @2) + (5:17 @3) + (1:56 @4) + (4 @5) *** 0.72 mi (12:35 / mi) +5m 12:20 / mi

Sprint 3 at Fort Washington SP. 1.0km, 17m. This one was all micro-O except for ~300m out and back from the S/F. Again several small bobbles trying to manage the quick navigation and control code checking. Used SIAir for all three Sprints, which certainly made things quicker, especially in the micro where the SI boxes were on the ground.

ahr:91 max:144

Zion NP - In the Kolob Canyon Area in the Northwest part of the park (and far away from the main Zion Canyon area, so far less crowded). Hiked the Taylor Creek Trail up a canyon to the Double Arch Alcove then a bit farther to a really neat waterfall. I also scrambled a bit to get to the top of the waterfall to get some additional views both up and down the canyon (this may not have been in the best “leave no trace” spirit, but I was far from the first to do it). Sunny, 50s rising into the 60s.

Zion NP, Kolob Canyon area - An out and back hike to the Timber Creek Overlook for a spectacular view of Zion and the surrounding area. GPS track is just the way out since I was running out of battery.

Note

Somewhat of a rest day. Drove up to Cedar Breaks National Monument with the intent of hiking but the trails are still snow-covered, in depths measured in feet (elevation is over 10,000 ft). The overlooks and Visitor Center were open, so we did get to view the Cedar Breaks amphitheater (no big deal, having already seen Bryce Canyon). Then drove to Utah’s “Mammoth Cave” which is a substantial lava tube system (apparently 2200 ft worth of passages). We headed 300 - 400 feet down one tunnel, until crawling was going to be required, so turned around. I also explored another tunnel which was not large enough for me to stand in for about 100 ft.

Bryce Canyon NP - North along the Rim Trail. Pretty decent scenery. ;-) Sunny and in the 50s - warm in the sun, cool in the shade. Elevation is about 8000ft, so I ended up walking most of the upgrades. HR from the GPS is totally bogus (no strap, just the wrist sensor). Doesn’t seem like the climb was as much as stated.
11 AM

Hiking 2:01:55 intensity: (40:41 @0) + (1:14:59 @1) + (5:26 @2) + (48 @3) + (1 @4) 3.99 mi (30:33 / mi) +294m 24:52 / mi
ahr:93 max:142

Bryce Canyon NP - Tower Bridge Trail down into the canyon to a formation reminiscent of London’s Tower Bridge. A less busy trail than yesterday’s hike. Sunny, 70s with some breeze up near the rim. Started and ended at the General Store, actual distance of Tower Bridge Trail is 1.5 miles each way.

Walking 22:31 intensity: (18:02 @0) + (4:29 @1) 0.72 mi (31:16 / mi) +13m 29:34 / mi

Walking back to the room from the store, stopping on the way to check out the vintage gas station from the late 40s (no longer operational - closed in the 80s) on the National Register of Historic Places. The gas and air pumps looked familiar but the prices did not (21.2 cents/gallon).

Bryce Canyon NP - Bryce Amphitheater Traverse, starting at Bryce Point (8300 ft), descending into the canyon, following the northern part of the Peekaboo Loop, and ending at Sunrise Point (8000 ft), ascending on the Queen’s Garden Trail. Took a short side trail to view a hoodoo resembling Queen Victoria when viewed from the proper angle. Trails were well graded and rarely steep (due to switchbacks) but were pretty twisty, working their way among and through various eroded rock things. GPS gave 612m climb but I adjusted it to the value published in the Park brochure.

Zion NP - Out and back a half mile from theHop Valley trailhead to look at rock formations and venture into the official wilderness area of the park. Sandy trail. (Note that GPS track is only for the return part.)

Part of our journey today up the Kolob Terrace Road to Lava Point in a (successful) effort to avoid the hordes in the main canyon. Lava Point has a spectacular view looking down into Zion and Wilderness Canyons. Plus, it’s at over 8000 feet so it was in the upper 60s compared to 85 in the canyon.

Zion NP - Angel’s Landing Trail. One of the classic hikes at Zion, involving a set of 21 switchbacks called Walter’s Wiggles (plus several more on the approach trail) and a traverse and climb across a ridge with 1000 foot drops on both sides. There are chains to hold on to for the last half mile of the hike. In spite of the difficulty, there were lots of people up there. We started fairly early (~8:30) so did beat some of the crowd. We had no need to go all the way to the top, finding a high point with spectacular views after about 0.1mi of climbing with the chains. It was sunny and in the 70s so we spent about an hour there taking in the views, taking pictures and watching others continue the ascent up the ridge.

My GPS track gave me an impressive 3800+ meters of climb, but since some of the trail is in a steep-walled canyon and much of the rest is along steep drop offs, lost signals and little position wiggles mean big bogus elevation changes. Distance and climb have been corrected to better reflect what we actually did.

Hiking 49:26 intensity: (43:02 @0) + (5:57 @1) + (27 @2) 0.4 mi (2:03:32 / mi) +30m 1:40:12 / mi
