At Moreau to do a bit more field checking and to test run some stuff. This is the hike from parking to start. Add ~150m from the bus drop. Drizzly, 55F.

A Red course variation. May be a bit long for expected winning time. Pretty intense, even being familiar with the terrain (which saved me on a couple of legs). Sweet stuff!

Reworking a control which Janet had trouble with on test runs. Plus checking stuff around the finish area.

Hiking 21:40 [1] 1.3 km (16:43 / km)

Back to the car.

Score-O at Garnet Hill (EMPO local event). Ski-O map with some additional detail but missing many features which might be on an orienteering map. Trails normally groomed for skiing were green, snowshoe/mountain bike trails mapped with black dashed lines. Woods a bit thick in places, both from a visibility and passability perspective. About half of the controls were just off trails and straightforward but several others were challenging. 27 controls overall spread across about 6 km^2. 2 hour time limit, all controls of equal value.

Had a decent run and got 23 of the 27 controls (skipped four out to the east end, farthest from the S/F). Struggled on a few of the tougher controls in the first hour (mostly due to visibility or trying to figure out what was actually mapped). Mostly clean in the second half and started to head back in at just about the right time. Maybe could've gotten one more. Drizzly and in the 50's - OK if you kept moving.

At Greenport Conservation Area. Trail intervals (4x). Ran hard for ~440m of a loop and easy for the other part of the loop (~330m). About 10m of climb on the hard portion. Splits 2:10- 2:13, recovery about the same time. Sunny, low 60's.

Umstead SP, near Raleigh, NC. What a coincidence. Two hours of daylight left and I find myself near the Raleigh-Durham airport and just happen to have running stuff and an O-map of Umstead SP. Stayed on trails but kept map contact. About 70F and not humid.

WCOC event at Stratton Brook. Red course with map exchange. 1:5000, 2.5m contours. Did well until I got tired. Lost a minute on #14 which was a "bag on a hillside". Bad route choices on #17 and #18. Checked a couple of extra depressions on #21. Could've been 7 or so minutes faster. Beautiful day, sunny and 60's. Straightline distance 6.4 km.

Green course at EMPO local event at Colonie Town Park. Substantial new terrain added to the map consisting of all wooded area with a complex network of mountain bike trails. Woods are mostly open with some generally-well-mapped thicker vegetation. Some good terrain detail and significant underfoot rockiness. A nice addition to the area making for more advanced orienteering than the earlier map allowed.

Nice course set by Frank Boscoe with lots of short legs and making good use of the new part. Sloppy on the first two controls getting into the map, confused by the mapping in one area, misread a control description and spent time checking the wrong feature and blew a couple of route choices. Probably could've been 10 min faster. Straight line distance 5.1 km. Sunny, 60's - very nice. Good turnout.

WCOC event at Gay City - "Expert Course". Major mistake on #2 which cost about 6 minutes. Otherwise run was OK. Overshot #10 a bit - I think it was hung on a cliff near the edge of the circle. Beautiful day - mostly sunny, 60's with some breeze. Straigh line distance 5.6 km.

Ran at Fred Church's place (aka Olana). Mostly on carriage roads, which makes calling it a trail run a bit of a stretch. Did three repeats fairly hard of a section about 600m long with ~20 m of climb. It was hotter (and more humid) than I expected and I faded a bit on the third one. Cut a corner coming back down the hill, but time between the hard stuff was still about 4 min. Splits for the ups: 2:58, 3:02, 3:08. Nice day - sunny and about 80.

Been a while since I ran on roads. A fine day for it with temperature about 60F and low humidity - a bit of Fall in the air. HR bogus early in the run.

Field checking at Moreau for the US Champs Middle next Spring. All advanced control sites are checked (pending vetting, course consultant input, additional course tweaking and varmits eating my markers). Had to find improved locations for 5 or 6 controls. Found a few more thiings to add to the map too. Woods a little damp from yesterday's rain but the marshes were generally dry. Temperature around 70, so quite pleasant.

Rocky Mountain Goat on Diamond Bay map. A fine ending to a week of orienteering in the Laramie Range. With Soupbone most of the way - we tied for 16th place. Lots of rock features, plenty of sage and lots of opportunity to run (if only there were more oxygen). Good weather for running, partly cloudy, low 70's and breezy (="windy" anyplace other than Wyoming). Straight line distance 12.2 km.

Western States Championships Day 2 - Green course. Pelican Bay map. Very nice course in somewhat more technical terrain. Far less open field running than yesterday. But, a disappointing run. Seemed to be off line on most of the controls, so lots of 1- 2 minute errors. Also not the best route choice on the long leg. Shoulda coulda been under an hour. Dropped to 4th for 2 day total time. Straightline distance 6.7 km with 180m climb.

Western States Champs Day 1 - Green course. Plains of Despair map. Lots of running across open areas. A good run. Missed the first non-trivial control (#2) for about a 1 min loss, then hit all the others. A few hesitations and not quite optimal routes, but good otherwise. 2nd in M55, ~5th on Green. 6.0 km straightline with 265 m climb.
