Trail Run 50:56 intensity: (49 @1) + (4:22 @2) + (26:03 @3) + (19:42 @4) 4.57 mi (11:09 / mi) +240m 9:35 / mi

Parked on Reservoir Rd at the west end of Kennedy Park in Lenox. I knew there was a mountain bike trail which heads southward from Reservoir Rd but I had not run on it. I found the trailhead about 50m from where I parked. Trail was quite nice, lots of twists and turns, some rocks and roots. A hot day, probably in the low 80's in the woods, but there was a bit of a breeze to keep things reasonable. Trail led me to an area which I was familiar with and ran up to the overlook with a nice view to the east. Having found this trail, I now know the (almost) all trail route from Olivia's Overlook to the Arcadian Shop (probably about 6 miles - maybe a long out-and-back run someday).

Taconic Crest Trail from Rt. 20 north to Tower Mtn., then a loop around various points of interest in Pittsfield State Forest, ending up at Berry Pond (where Janet had parked after dropping me at the Rt. 20 trailhead). Lost the trail once and ended up on the parallel ATV trail but cut back on an ex-ATV trail after about a half mile or so. Foot traffic only trails are much nicer than the scars left by ATVs. The TCT is generally well marked and gets enough use that it's usually visible on the ground. Quite a nice day, dry and temperatures on the ridge in the 70's.

Orienteering race 1:13:34 intensity: (35 @1) + (11:34 @2) + (29:21 @3) + (32:04 @4) *** 9.23 km (7:58 / km) +74m 7:40 / km

Red course at Five Rivers on a recently updated and expanded map (contours updated from Lidar data, newly acquired land included but still needs some fieldchecking). Lots of trail running but summertime vegetation in the fields made for some tough going. Sunny and warm. Fun to get into some new terrain (and/or more accurately mapped) in an area I've been many times. Straightline distance 7.1 km.

Hot (low 90's) so went to Hand Hollow where I could run almost all in the woods. Took it easy. A few deer flies but I think they got washed off by sweat before they could bite.

Easy run. Legs still tired from the weekend activities. Upper 70's but starting to get humid.

Trail Run 1:34:53 intensity: (3:34 @1) + (39:37 @2) + (51:13 @3) + (29 @4) ** 7.76 mi (12:14 / mi) +535m 10:04 / mi

Trails at Pittsfield SF. Up Hawthorne trail (the uphill part of Curley's snowshoe race), over Pine Mtn, Tower Mtn, past Berry Pond and then down Turner Trail (twisty single track). Walked quite often on the uphills. A couple of navigational errors - missed one very obvious trail junction and then headed the wrong way on the Taconic Crest Trail off the top of Tower Mountain. Oops. Nice day, upper 70's partly cloudy and fairly dry.

Sprint B on Ratlun Mtn. map (which I ran first). Lost some time on 1 by taking the long trail route around to the right (left trail route is much shorter). Overshot 7and searched a bit too close to the trail junction (have had trouble with this pit in the past). Run otherwise OK and lots of fun. Straightline distance 1.4k, climb 45m

Orienteering race 13:32 intensity: (2:05 @3) + (9:01 @4) + (2:26 @5) *** 1.85 km (7:20 / km) +47m 6:30 / km
ahr:151 max:160 spiked:6/8c shoes: VJ Falcons 4 (yellow)

Sprint A on Ratlum Mtn. map. Lost 30 - 40 seconds on each of 4 and 6. Misjudged the very short distance to 4. Went brain dead near 6, thought I was going to 7 for a bit, then recovered but then proceeded to head the wrong way after I exited the control. Also was overly safe on approach to 2. Didn't start FR until control 1 - distance and time adjusted, track is what it is. Straightline distance 1.5k, climb 55m.

Wonderful weather (70's, sunny and dry) and a fine get together afterwards with the WCOC crowd. Thanks to Charlie and Rhonda for hosting.

In Manchester (NH). Mostly in residential neighborhoods. Ran past the track at a nearby school so did a lap just because it was there. Beautiful day, 75F, mostly sunny, dry with a slight breeze.

Pittsfield SF. Stayed on the mountain bike trails in the flatter area. A few more trails in the terrain than on the map I had (which is far better than the official park map). Stopped at trail junctions quite a few times to try to figure things out. Went somewhat longer than planned. Some light rain but upper 60's.

Trail run at Pine Bush Preserve, starting at Madison Ave Ext. entrance. Mostly following the Red trail, with about a 10 min excursion off onto some single track mountain bike trails (probably in non-Preserve land). Trails are pretty tame with no rocks, an occasional root and some loose sand. Legs a bit sore from racing yesterday. Quite warm, particularly in the sun, since it was about 85F. Fortunately, most of where I ran was in the woods.

OK 5k road race in Kinderhook, NY. No (nearby) orienteering this weekend, so did a race on the roads to get an assessment of my fitness level. A bit slower than I had hoped for, but about what I expected since I could be a few pounds lighter. Finished 107 in a field of 520-something and 5th in 55-59 (about 2 minutes slower than 1st 55-59).

A well organized race with all the amenities and only 15-20 minutes from home. A "flat and fast" course which is pretty boring. Scenic if you like farm fields and historic buildings (and running past the cemetery where Martin Van Buren is buried). Overcast with some sprinkles and in the 60's so not bad for running.

Road Run warm up/down 8:09 intensity: (35 @1) + (7:34 @2) 0.77 mi (10:35 / mi) +3m 10:28 / mi
ahr:119 max:126 shoes: NB878 - #10

Running around afterwards. Felt the hamstrings tightening up a bit shortly after I finished the race so wanted to keep moving.

Greenport Conservation Area. Easy run on trails. Partly cloudy but with some rain showers (and a rumble of thunder or two). About 70F, so quite nice even with the wetness.

Blue course on Rockhouse Mountain map at HVO local event, hosted by the Breton family. Long legs on Rockhouse means lots of mountain laurel and rocky ground, but it's all very well mapped and useful for navigation. Blueberry has grown up a bit but it wasn't too much of a problem. We visited some of the same general areas as during last year's Highlander, including one of the iron mines. Stayed in contact almost the entire time so hit all the controls pretty well. The bags were all hung pretty conspicuously, so were usually visible from a ways off. Straightline distance 6.8 km, climb was moderate. Upper 60's and sunny. Clouded up and sprinkled after we finished.

Orienteering 20:00 [1] ** 1.0 km (20:00 / km)

Picked up 10 controls, either on the white course or ones I'd been to. Leisurely pace.

Red course at Tawasentha Park (EMPO local event). Good use of the terrain by Will Kennerly with several short-legged butterfly loops in the more technical area. Also a nice update of the map in the areas where it counted (I only noticed one area where the match between map and terrain could use some work and that was an area without controls in it). A wet day, mostly due to overnight rain plus some occasional light showers (didn't notice any while I was running). A bit slippery underfoot on the steeper slopes. Of the 25 controls, only about half were intermediate or advanced level, but such is the nature of a park this developed. My two misses were due to slopiness on my part and cost maybe a minute each. Straignt line distance 6.1km, climb by counting contours was 270m (!).
