Hanging the Billygoat bags in the lower part (plus a few bags for the rec courses). Bright, sunny and crisp. Fine day for a walk in the woods. Started the watch at #26.

Field Checking 7:00 [1] 0.2 km (35:00 / km) +10m 28:00 / km

Placing flag and some water at the aid station Sunday morning. Plus the drive down to the pavilion, so I adjusted the distance and time a bit.

Wandered around Moreau. Hung flags some places where I found streamers (and a few places where there weren't streamers). Got confused by a streamer hung on the N end of a marsh when I was looking for a point on the S end of a marsh. I think it was a streamer left over from the A meet at a point I ended up not using. Took about 15 minutes of relocating until I came back to the other end of the same marsh and found the streamer there. Doh.

Woods were wonderful, as they probably will be tomorrow. A few leaves out, but visibility is still mostly excellent. Sunny and 50ish, same as predicted for tomorrow. Thanks to the Peter responsible for the weather.

Note

Jury duty (Grand Jury). After excuses, there were 35 of us left, from which 23 were chosen. I was one of the winners (or not), so I now have a committment with the Columbia County Court every Thursday afternoon until November. Hopefully it will be interesting more often than not.

Another road run. Need more time on trails. Maybe after the weekend.

Shaker Museum Rd and back. Moving a bit faster than usual with about the same effort as usual. 50F, overcast. I overdressed a bit with tights and two shirts. Plenty warm.

Field Checking 1:05:00 [1] ** 2.8 mi (23:13 / mi)
spiked:3/3c

Checking out the BG Finish area plus streamering a few Orange rec controls. Light rain and getting cooler. Saw a baby beaver in Moreau Lake and later saw an owl.

Note

BG maps are printed. Hope no one complains about B&W at 1:20000.

Hauling water up to BG control #8. Carrying 2 gal most of the way, 3 gal for about 500m and 5 gal for the last 100m. Thanks to EMPO members Bob Lange and Doug Swank for their help. Janet and the Hawkes-Teeters got 7 gal up to # 3. Got back about 15 minutes before rain started.

Early morning run somewhere near Chippewa Falls, WI. Long but gentle hills. Some rather steep kames and eskers? in the surrounding terrain, but the roads tend to go around them. Upper 30's, but comfortable (glad I had gloves).

Orienteering race 46:21 [4] **** 4.64 km (9:59 / km) +159m 8:32 / km
spiked:15/18c shoes: VJ Falcons 4 (yellow)

Middle distance US Champs at Chattahoochee Bend SP. Interesting terrain with patches of bare rock and lots of other rock features but thick woods with scratchy vines. Lost 4+ minutes on the first control. I think that the start triangle in the terrain wasn't where it's shown on the map. Too high on 2 and chased a bag on the way to 8 for anothe rminute or so on each. Finally reading things pretty well by the spectator control (#14). Sixth in M55. Straightline distance 3.6k. Climb 140m.

Green Long Course US Champs. Chattahoochee Bend SP. Pretty flat area mostly in the floodplain of the river. Lots of running, some navigation. Some point features seemed to be a bit off.

Twelve good controls, one really bad control (#9). Lost 12 min (and a medal).

Straightline distance 7.7k. Climb 70m.

At Peebles Island State Park while Janet vetted control locations for the Speedy Goat. Ran mostly the perimeter of the island. The lowest I've ever seen the water level, especially for April. Marshes were wet but noticeably smaller than normal. Beautiful day - 60, sunny and a bit of breeze.

Orienteering 13:13 intensity: (13 @1) + (2:48 @2) + (5:34 @3) + (4:38 @4) *** 1.91 km (6:56 / km) +14m 6:41 / km
ahr:138 max:151 spiked:7/8c shoes: NB 573 Trail Shoes

Just happened to have an advanced copy of the courses for the Speedy Goat, so I ran them. Ran hard but didn't red-line. This was labeled Sprint A. No flags (and Janet was in the process of putting streamers on some of them) but the visibility was excellent and most of the control features were obvious. Came out on the wrong angle from one control so didn't hit the trail I thought I did. Corrected when the vegetation didn't match. Spent some extra time at one control since the map and terrain don't agree - later conferred with Janet and decided to change both map and control location. I think I would have been in the 10 - 11 min range with flags and racing, so the fastest guys will probably do 7 - 8 minutes. Nice course.

Orienteering 13:15 intensity: (9 @1) + (2:20 @2) + (5:44 @3) + (5:02 @4) *** 1.83 km (7:14 / km) +13m 7:00 / km
ahr:138 max:153 spiked:7/7c shoes: NB 573 Trail Shoes

Sprint B from the Speedy Goat. Hit them all OK but took a circuitous route to one control and also spent some time looking for a corridor through the vegetation which wasn't there (map to be modified). Fastest should be 7-8 minutes.

Field Checking 26:00 intensity: (24:54 @1) + (1:06 @2) 0.69 mi (37:42 / mi)
ahr:84 max:126 shoes: NB 573 Trail Shoes

Wandering around one of the Sprint A controls to improve its location and mapping. Plus jogging back to the car.

Red course at Sessions Woods. Lots of climb, four times to the top of the same hill with butterfly loops. Many short legs in very open woods. And nearly perfect weatherwise, 50's and sunny. Off on three controls for about 3 minutes time loss. Straightline distance 6.2k, climb 275m.

Trail Run 7:39 intensity: (1:14 @1) + (3:18 @2) + (3:07 @3) 0.83 mi (9:13 / mi) +31m 8:15 / mi

Pig Day 3 at Big Bone Lick SP. Green course. Another middle distance course with plenty of vegetation and many unmapped trails (presumably game trails but some are as distinct as mapped trails). A rain shower before I ran so the woods were quite wet. Didn't rain while I ran but there was plenty of mud.

An OK run, with only one big error (~4 min on a <100m leg). Lots of people had similar difficulties so there may be a mapping anomoly (trail bends not as mapped?). Several hesitations as I was trying to be careful.

Straight line distance 4.2km, climb listed at 120m but contour interval was probably 5m rather than 2.5m as printed on the map.

Soupbone got me by almost 6 minutes to win total time for the weekend by 49 seconds. Lifetime head-to-head record at the Flying Pig now stands at 12-9 in my favor. I'm up by 19:10 in total time.
