Road Run intervals 39:11 intensity: (9:00 @2) + (20:11 @3) + (10:00 @5) 4.5 mi (8:42 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

Road Intervals. 6 x 400m with 90 sec recovery. 1:45, 1:42, 1:40, 1:38, 1:37, 1:38. First one is uphill. Others mostly flat. 50F, overcast, a little breeze. There was snow in the higher elevations earlier in the day. Spring tomorrow, Summer by Saturday.

Orienteering race 1:01:54 [4] *** 7.04 km (8:47 / km) +185m 7:46 / km
spiked:12/15c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

DVOA local event at Governor Dick Park near Mt Gretna, PA. Red course. A new map with wide open woods on one side of a ridge and green with lots of rock on the other side of the ridge. Fortunately we were in the open part so it was fast and quite fun. Fine through #9 except for a small overshoot at #5. Then the course went into a more detailed area (much more rock) with reduced visibility (much more undergrowth) and I didn't adjust, resulting in about 6 minutes lost on three controls. OK the rest of the way in, but 4 minutes faster would've moved me up about 5 places. Overcast and about 50 with wet woods but little, if any, rain. Straight line distance was 6.1km.

Orienteering race 2:01:25 [3] *** 10.34 km (11:45 / km) +350m 10:03 / km
spiked:11/16c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

HVO local event on Baileytown map, starting from Silvermine parking lot (actually ~700m west of the parking). Blue course - advertised as 7 km. Lots of unmapped and undermapped blueberry and barberry. Nice day - sunny and mid 60's. Sloppy orienteering. Not reading detail very well on the 1:15000 map (a color copy I believe). Spent more time than I cared to crawling through a green marsh mapped as white woods. Course was odd, starting with two yellowish and an orange control (at the end of a 15 contour climb), a "finish" control which was a map exchange for an additional control to set up a leg to the real finish which was a crapshoot as to how much blueberry would be on the route you chose. It's always interesting to orienteer in Harriman. Straightline distance (with the bonus control) was about 8.1 km.

Road Run intervals 39:55 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (20:24 @3) + (9:31 @5) 4.57 mi (8:44 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

Road intervals. 4 x 400m + 4 x 200m. 90 sec recovery for the 400's, 60 sec for the 200's. Splits: 138, 138, 136, 137, 46, 44, 47, 45. Mid 60's so was a bit warm by the end. 66N and back - the longest nearby stretch of relatively flat road, conveniently located about a mile away for warm-up and cool-down.

Orienteering race 1:13:28 [4] *** 8.26 km (8:54 / km) +265m 7:40 / km
spiked:14/15c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

DVOA event on Stuckey Pond map. Red course, 7.0 km, 265m climb. Couldn't resist the chance to run on such a fine map so drove from Pound Ridge to Montclair, NJ and spent the night at Greg and Stevie's then drove to the Water Gap in the morning. More good running weather, overcast and about 50 but with a bit more breeze than yesterday. A little surprised when I flipped over the map and realized (remembered?) that it was 1:15000. No real problems adjusting, just harder to see the details. Only miss in the circle was on #2 when I didn't see that there were two pieces of wall and went to the one which was about 2 contours lower than the one I was looking for. Lost 2 or 3 minutes on #7 with a bad route choice. Otherwise a pretty good run on a nice course by Petr Hartman.

Orienteering race 1:26:13 [4] *** 9.43 km (9:09 / km) +395m 7:34 / km
spiked:12/13c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

HVO/WCOC event at Ward Pound Ridge. Red course - 7.8km, no climb specified (counted 395m by the route I took - probably could only have done it with 20 or 30m less). Good run on what is a very good but aging map (most notably "open field" may or may not be an open field). A few less than optimal route choices and some sloppy execution mid-route but hit all but the bingo control (#3) pretty well. Only lost a couple of minutes checking out some unmapped boulders in an unmapped less green area near 3. Good running weather, overcast and 50ish with the forecast showers not appearing.

Flying Pig Long Course at East Fork SP. Nice course with some brutally steep climbs (with the option to avoid them by going way around). Lost 3 minutes on #5 by not checking the compass enough while crossing a reentrant system. Crossed an extra reentrant and had a much longer trail run than I should have. Stopped short on #6 due to a map misread and drifted off on #7. Overall could've been about 5 minutes faster. Ended up 2nd overall to Charlie S by 26 seconds. Had an early start (2 minutes ahead of Charlie) so the weather was good for running. Saw Charlie a couple of times during the run but he never caught me. Straightline distance was 7.0km.

Orienteering 22:12 [2] *** 1.96 km (11:20 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

A tour around the model area on the South side. Checking out the vegetation and wetness underfoot.

Orienteering race 35:45 [4] *** 4.05 km (8:49 / km) +145m 7:29 / km
spiked:9/10c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

Flying Pig, Middle Distance on Turkey Ridge (South side of East Fork SP). OK run. Lost 2 minutes on #4, a 100m leg - got off bearing due to low visibility in green stuff. Some other small time losses. 6th in M55 and 6th overall on Green (pretty competitive M55 group!) 3:40 behind first (Bill Pullman). Quite a bit of multiflora rose resulting in lots of leg scratches. Weather a bit on the warm side (60's) and sunny. Straightline distance 3.5km.

Road Run 36:26 [3] 4.17 mi (8:44 / mi)

Around the "south block". 60's, overcast, started to sprinkle as I was cooling down.

Field Checking 59:48 [2] *** 2.46 km (24:19 / km)
shoes: NB 874

At Moreau with the contours only map. Walk (and climb) to one of the potential start sites at Janet's pace. Time includes some wandering around checking features to confirm location. Actual time about 40 minutes. 1.5km, 200m climb - if you want to get to the good stuff, you have to work for it. :-)
2 PM

Orienteering (Test Run) 1:19:57 [3] **** 5.6 km (14:16 / km)
shoes: NB 874

A test run at Moreau with 8 control points. Did OK in areas I had been to. Challenging to try to move with any speed in areas I hadn't been to, especially with only a small fraction of the rock features mapped. "Mispunched" on one control - things pretty much matched in the vicinity of the "control" but didn't on the subsequent leg. Visibility and runnability quite good. Rugged terrain. There are lots of opportunities for parallel errors. A bit warm with temps in the 70's but too early for bugs.
4 PM

Field Checking 1:18:37 [1] *** 3.24 km (24:15 / km)
shoes: NB 874

Exploring the SW portion of the area and hiking back to the car. Had my distance contact swept out by a branch so things were a bit blurry for the last 15 or 20 minutes.

Orienteering race 17:23 [5] *** 2.48 km (7:01 / km)
spiked:14/16c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

"Fox" sprint at Stratton Brook. Lost about 1:30 on #10 drifting off into the green to the north. Not clean on 11, hit the others pretty well. A bit warm running with temperature in the 70's but quite nice for standing around. Straightline distance 2.2km.

Orienteering race 14:18 [5] *** 2.09 km (6:50 / km)
spiked:15/15c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

"Hounds" sprint at Stratton Brook. Clean on most of them. Probably lost 5 - 10 sec each on #7 and #9. Straightline distance 1.9km.

Orienteering race 42:41 [3] *** 5.13 km (8:19 / km)
spiked:30/30c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

Score-O at Stratton Brook using controls from the sprints plus some additional ones set a bit farther out. Half of the controls had red circles and half had green. The objective was to alternate colors as you visited controls, which forced the concentration to a higher level than a simple score-o. Tried to keep moving at a moderate pace and hit them all pretty well. Route OK but not optimum with probably about 800m of extra distance.

Road Run intervals 36:50 intensity: (7:30 @2) + (21:05 @3) + (8:15 @5) 4.26 mi (8:39 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

Road Intervals. 3 x 400m with 90 sec recovery then 4 x 200m with 60 sec recovery. Splits: 1:42, 1:40, 1:38, 47, 47, 46, 45. Nice day - low 60's.

Discovery*: Saw an eagle flying down the Kinderhook Creek just as I crossed the bridge.

* I'll give George (aka "walk") credit for logging the "new AOWN" first, but the thought had occurred to me before I saw it in his log. My "discovery" could eat his "discovery" (a wimpy little snake) for lunch!
