Orienteering race 1:40:25 [4] **** 5.07 km (19:48 / km) +110m 17:52 / km
spiked:12/16c shoes: VJ Falcons 2

Boulder Dash Day 2 at Nottingcook Forest. Well, this run makes yesterday's look outstanding. About 35 minutes of errors, mostly on #3 (12 min) and #4 (20min). Kept drifting off the compass bearing and losing contact. Spent lots of time on the large spur between 3 and 4 while looking for 4. Regrouped after finding 4 and had a decent run from there on in with only a few small misses. Managed to still place in M50 for two day total time (3rd, ~23 minutes behind Phil in second). 21st on Green X for the day, 12th overall on Green X for two day. Clearly a test of navigational accuracy rather than speed.

Orienteering race 1:10:02 [4] **** 4.78 km (14:39 / km) +75m 13:35 / km
spiked:10/13c shoes: VJ Falcons 2

Boulder Dash Day 1 on Nottingcook Forest map (Bow, NH). A less than stellar run but not bad on a relative basis (5th on Green X for the day). Technical courses set by Bob Lux on a challenging map. Visibility was generally not good . Lost about 8 minutes on #3 and another 3 on #8 plus several smaller errors due to sloppy execution - 15 - 16 minutes total.

Road Run 26:03 [3] 2.96 mi (8:48 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

A quick (short, not fast) run before heading off to NH for the Boulder Dash. 66N, Shaker Museum Road, Albany Tpke, 66S. About 65F and overcast.

Road Run 36:03 [3] 4.17 mi (8:39 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

A relatively rare run at noon time so I can get at least one run in this week (due to work travel and meetings). Of course it was like a July day rather than September. 83F and sunny. Did the south loop - 66S, Richmond, Bashford, 32E.

Orienteering race 41:38 [5] *** 4.17 km (9:59 / km) +210m 7:59 / km
spiked:14/16c shoes: VJ Falcons 2

Leg 4 for 12pt teams at US Relay Champs (Osbornedale SP map). Very good run with about 30 seconds lost on each of #7 and #8. Started about 9 minutes behind the 3rd place HVO team and managed to catch them just before the spectator control to bring the EMPO team to the podium. Woohoo! A really fine course by PG with lots of rocks, lots of climb and plenty of variety.

Orienteering race 15:46 [5] *** 1.71 km (9:13 / km) +33m 8:25 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: VJ Falcons 2

Sprint A on Course 2 (OBG). Probably lost about a total of a minute on small misses on three controls (4,5, and 8). Things sure come up fast at 1:4000. Tied with Dean Sturtevant for fastest M50. Fourth overall for the course. Lots of West Pointers out there running really fast and then trying to figure out where they were. :-)

Orienteering race 13:53 [5] *** 1.83 km (7:35 / km) +40m 6:50 / km
spiked:10/10c shoes: VJ Falcons 2

Sprint B on Course 2 (OBG). A good run, helped somewhat by seeing other people at or near controls on most of them Spiked the first control unassisted. First M50, fourth on the course overall and first M50 for two sprint total. Fun courses by Joe B and great organization by WCOC (and by PG).

Orienteering race 21:43 intensity: (12:43 @4) + (9:00 @5) *** 3.15 km (6:54 / km) +33m 6:33 / km
spiked:17/21c shoes: VJ Falcons 2

Sprint C - All Comers Race. Mass start with three loops done in different orders (I had variation 6). Good thing this race didn't count for rankings. Made several mental errors (started on wrong loop first, misread a control description, thought I was headed to #13 when I was going to #14). Probably could've been about two minutes faster. Didn't push too hard until I started the last loop about 10 seconds behind Charlie and Susie Dewitt was just behind me. Passed Charlie and then gave the lead back by making a mistake. Had to run him down in front of the heckling spectators. :-) A really fun and well designed course.

Road Run 34:34 [3] 4.02 mi (8:36 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Syring Rd, Albany Turnpike to 13MF Albany milepost and back. Hilly. ~70F but muggy. ~18min out, ~16:30 back (much more downhill).

Trail Run 48:30 [3] 4.8 mi (10:06 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

At Hand Hollow Preserve. Wonderful day for a run - 60's and sunny. Did most of the trails including a new one which has been de-vegetated (i.e. brush-hogged) but isn't marked as official yet. Much work has been done on the other trails since I was last here, removing rocks and roots (or filling in over them). They've even rerouted some trails where the roots were too numerous/difficult to remove. Someone has way too much time (and I believe some landscaping toys). The trails are nice to run on, but where's the challenge? I suppose most members of the Columbia Land Conservancy don't want to be too AOWN. At least nothing has been paved. :-)

Orienteering 1:04:15 intensity: (14:00 @0) + (50:15 @3) *** 3.39 mi (18:57 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

Hanging control flags in the morning before the NOD event at Five Rivers. Hung a total of 14 bags, which is included in the total time. Beautiful day - mostly sunny and low 60's - resulting in a pretty good turnout. Cooler when I was hanging the flags between 9 and 10am. The advanced course was a score-O/Poker-O (build a poker hand of five cards selected from the 20 which were out there, one at each control location). Some understood the concept better than others. :-)

An interesting coincidence that the distance measured by the Forerunner for the control hanging loop I did today was exactly the same as yesterdays. Completely different loops!

I appear to have a streak of running 4 days in a row - longest in a while. It'll probably end soon.

Orienteering 49:07 intensity: (11:00 @0) + (38:07 @3) *** 3.39 mi (14:29 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

Hanging the more remote control flags at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center for Sundays NOD event. Ran between controls but time includes hanging 11 bags (a minute per bag? - sites weren't streamered but I'd visited them before). Did this after helping to man the EMPO booth for 4 hours at the Fall Festival at Five Rivers (a convenient coincidence that we had scheduled our NOD event here). I set up four demo controls within a couple hundred meters of the booth using a small portion of the map - about five groups gave it a try. I'm not logging it, but I spent 20 minutes walking around to hang those bags. Rained early in the day but cleared up for the festival and was quite nice by the time I went out to hang flags.

Road Run intervals 38:43 intensity: (29:58 @3) + (8:45 @5) 4.58 mi (8:27 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Road Intervals. 5 x 400 with 2:30 recovery. 65 and overcast - cooler than it's been. Splits 145, 144, 148. 142, 146. Target was 145. These didn't feel particularly hard. Used the Forerunner to measure interval distance and pace.

Thursday Sep 13, 2007 #

Road Run 21:32 [3] 2.55 mi (8:27 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

South on 66 and back. Low 60's - nice for running. Got home late from work and didn't have time to run for long. Better than skipping the run.

Tuesday Sep 11, 2007 #

Road Run 32:56 [3] 3.71 mi (8:53 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

66N, Albany Tpke, back via Howes and Shaker Museum Rd. Mid 60's but quite humid. Felt a bit sluggish.

Orienteering race 20:09 [5] *** 3.0 km (6:43 / km)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

"BTTW" Sprint at Norristown State Hospital. Very hot (80's and sunny). Made about a 1 minute error at #6 (didn't see a building hidden in vegetation - D'oh!) and about 15 sec error on #8 (took a route around vegetation that I could have easily gone through). Course was mostly open using the complex-shaped buildings to create route choice. Ended up 5th overall, Wyatt first in ~15 min.

Orienteering race 24:34 [5] *** 2.9 km (8:28 / km)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

"Kievesque" sprint at Norristown (trash in the woods and terrain apparently like Kiev, no dogs though). Even hotter than the first sprint - really felt it near the end. Four controls in the middle in the woods and a nice little "maze" near the end. Pretty clean on most of the controls but slowed way down in the woods and for the maze. 8th overall, 1:15 behind 3rd. Balter was first in ~21 min. Two great courses set by Clem.

Road Run 28:27 [3] 3.07 mi (9:16 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Tried to run at "easy/long" pace based on 5k time a few weeks ago. Tough to go that slow at first but then settled in. Should've been targeting 9:30, but 9:15 was all I could manage. 66N, Shaker Museum Rd to T'way bridge and back. 75F and a bit muggy.

Trail Run 47:49 [3] 4.51 mi (10:36 / mi) +250m 9:03 / mi
shoes: NB 809

Parked at Olivia's overlook (along Richmond-Lenox Rd. near where it crosses the Lenox Mountain ridge). Headed NE to Monk's Pond then down the dirt road to the powerline, up the spur to Baldhead, over to the top of the ridge and back to the car via the ridge (which is mostly downhill). Lots of climb (and descent), probably more than I counted from the topo map since there are some ups and downs which the contours don't capture. Nice day for a run, mostly sunny and about 70.

Monday Sep 3, 2007 #

Orienteering (Field Checking) 1:30:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (45:00 @3) *** 5.12 mi (17:35 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

More field checking and remapping at Five Rivers. Ran between control sites but spent some time walking (or just standing still) to (I hope) improve the map. Sunny and about 80F. Good enough for the NOD event (white, yellow and score-O).

Trail Run race 24:15 [5] 3.07 mi (7:54 / mi) +100m 7:10 / mi
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

1st annual Landis Arboretum Forest Run 5K. Very nice course with lots of ups and downs, but all runnable and a net elevation loss of about 25m. The road runners all complained about how hilly it was. About 10% paved, 50% mowed grass trails and 40% woods trails. Every root and rock sticking up was painted orange! 3.07mi by the forerunner, 340 ft of climb by counting contours on the USGS topo. Super weather - sunny and ~60F at race time (10am).

Ended up 21st overall (out of 128, but that included walkers). 5th in M50-59, but only 48 seconds behind the two who tied for 1st in M50, and 4 sec ahead of 6th. No wonder I kept seeing old guys out there. I don't think I could've been 48 sec faster.
