Orienteering race 1:23:36 [5] *** 5.88 km (14:13 / km) +205m 12:06 / km
spiked:8/12c shoes: VJ Falcons

Green Day 2 at West Point. An even worse performance than yesterday but on a much better course. Lost 10 minutes on the second control (drifted left, made all the parallel features match but there was no parallel flag with a parallel code). Lost another 5 minutes on 4 and then climbed over the spur getting to 6 which cost at least another minute. Good thing I did OK on the sprint because it was 0 for 2 on the A-meet runs this weekend.

Note

Noticed after my run on Sunday that the sole of one of my o-shoes was mostly detached, so it may be time to break in some new ones. 430km in about 18 months seems like pretty decent performance, considering that over half of my orienteering is in rocky northeast US terrain. An endorsement for VJ Falcons I guess, although I have made several repairs with Shoe Goo over the life of the shoes.

Orienteering race 1:18:08 [5] *** 5.49 km (14:14 / km) +275m 11:23 / km
spiked:8/11c shoes: VJ Falcons

Green Day at West Point. Good terrain, good map, and a course which didn't take advantage of either. And not a very good run. Substantial mistakes on 3 different controls (3, 7 and 3 minutes). Two of them were parallel errors, the other was due to a flaky map and questionable control placement. Course was quite physical with lots of gratuitous climb, epecially on the last two controls. Nice day in the 60's with some sun. 7th in M50, 10th overall on Green (which surprised me considering the mediocre-at-best performance).

Orienteering race 19:05 [5] *** 2.2 km (8:40 / km) +60m 7:38 / km
spiked:20/22c shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

Team Fundraiser Sprint at Camp Buckner. Fun event on a very fine course by PG. Bobbled #13 and #21 for about 45sec of errors. Lost another second or two coming up the wall in the finish chute.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 2:15:00 [1] *** 8.75 mi (15:26 / mi)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 10

Finishing up field work for Billygoat and Sprints. Actual time was about 4.5 hrs but a lot of that was moving very slowly if at all. Visited about 10 of the BG controls to update codes since we inserted an additional control. Changed the first few controls of one of the sprint courses and made a few map updates (so the route choice through the unmapped medium green doesn't look so tempting). Checked control locations for the rec courses on BG day. Surprised by the distance I covered just wandering around - trusting that the Forerunner is correct.

50's to maybe 60 with some breeze. Found some patches of snow remaining at the higher elevations. Quite a few downed branches and some trail erosion (from the April 15-16 storm).

Road Run 35:05 [3] 4.05 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Syring Rd, Albany Tpke to the 13 M.F. Albany marker and back. Very nice day - 60F and ptly cloudy. Stopped for a few seconds to check out the construction work on Albany Tpke (replacing a culvert).

Orienteering race 52:46 [5] **** 4.8 km (11:00 / km) +175m 9:18 / km
spiked:9/11c shoes: VJ Falcons

Day 2 of Surebridge Challenge. Another decent run with about a minute of error on each of three controls (6, 8 and 9). A bit warmer today and sunny. 3rd in M50 (by 2 seconds), 8th overall on Green.

Event: HVO A-Meet

Orienteering race 1:11:45 [5] **** 5.2 km (13:48 / km) +220m 11:23 / km
spiked:11/14c shoes: VJ Falcons

Green course on Surebridge Mountain map. Decent run in very techical terrain with an excellent map. About 4 minutes of errors total on three different controls. Beautiful day - sunny with temperature about 70. 6th in M50 in a reasonably strong field, but only 3 minutes out of 2nd. 9th overall on Green.

Road Run 35:24 [3] 4.11 mi (8:37 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Spring at last - over 60F. Rt. 66N, Shaker Museum Rd to the cemetery and back (hmmm - I guess coming back from the cemetery is the important part :-) ). AOWN: A heron flying overhead, very noisy peepers in the wet areas, and three deer. Eight deer in the backyard as we ate dinner.

Road Run 30:46 [3] 3.54 mi (8:41 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

66N, Albany Tpke. Wimped out the last two days due to rain (torrential on Sunday, getting it out of the basement on Monday). Still only in the low 40's.

Orienteering race 46:04 [4] *** 4.6 km (10:01 / km)
spiked:11/13c shoes: VJ Falcons

Local meet at Schenectady Musuem Nature Preserve - the debut of e-punching at an EMPO local event. A fine day for orienteering - upper 40's with some sun. An OK run on a map which is a bit flaky in places (but I've run and set courses here so that's no excuse). Lots of unmapped (mtn bike) trails and vegetation needs updating. Lost a few minutes by not checking the compass when I should have. 650m "run-in" to the finish, which actually was a pretty good route choice leg. This is a small map (~ 1km^2 at 1:7500) so this was the longest course offered. Map has lots of contours, but the interval is supposedly 5ft.

Road Run intervals 8:21 [5] 1.25 mi (6:41 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

5 x 0.25mi with 0.25mi recovery. On the road (66S) Splits: 141, 135(downhill), 139, 143, 143.

Road Run 23:40 [3] 2.62 mi (9:02 / mi)

Warm up/cool down, recovery times. Ran today when it was 50F rather than waiting until tomorrow when it's supposed to *snow* some more.

Road Run 34:15 [3] 4.04 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Syring Rd., Albany Tpke west and back. Another wintry Spring day - 40F, overcast and breezy - no snow in the forecast until Thursday. Ran the return half 1:15 faster than the first half, which may have something to do with ~200ft of uphill on the out which is downhill on the return.

Interestingly, the mile posts on Albany Turnpike (from when it was the main route between Boston and Albany) are almost exactly one mile and two miles from my house using the route I ran today (which is about 0.7mi before I get to Alb Tpke). Looks like rods and chains are just as accurate as the GPS thingy. I turned around 13 miles shy of Albany.

Road Run 36:59 [3] 4.24 mi (8:43 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Should've done a longer run today but have a cold and the weather was non-motivating (35F, overcast with snow flurries). Afterwards was glad I went out, but where the heck is Spring? 66N, Pratt Rd (the big hill), Bacchus, 66S.

Orienteering 23:58 [3] ** 2.98 km (8:03 / km) +10m 7:55 / km
spiked:12/13c shoes: VJ Falcons

EMPO epunch practice session. Grant Staats set a course using an aerial photo of some land his family owns along the Hudson river about 3 miles south of Albany (on the opposite side of the river). First time I recall orienteering using an aerial photo - lots of fun. Most of the controls were along handrails or on fairly obvious features but it was good practice using far less information than you get from a regular o-map. There was no scale given on the map so you had figure it out from the first few controls (scale was about 1:4300). Straight line course length was 2.25km, Forerunner measured just under 3.0km actual distance I covered. Temperature in the 30's and very wet underfoot.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 50:00 [1] *** 4.1 km (12:12 / km)

At Camp Pinnacle. Field checking BG sprint courses (and doing a bit of remapping). In the 30's with some breeze in the open areas. 2" of *fresh* snow on the ground (at 1500' elevation). Most of the deep snow which was here two weeks ago is gone. Hope winter ends soon but also hope that it's not 80F for Billygoat weekend. Actually out for about 1:40 but a good bit of that was standing around improving the map.

Road Run 35:33 [3] 4.11 mi (8:39 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

66N, Shaker Museum Rd. and back. A nice winter's day run - except that it's April!! 34F with a breeze. I guess this is payback for 60's in January.

Tuesday Apr 3, 2007 #

Road Run 29:38 [3] 3.34 mi (8:52 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

66N to Pitts Rd and back. Legs still somewhat trashed from the weekend (left quad, right ankle and knee sore and lots of red dots all over my upper legs). 53F (dropping to 48 by the time I finished) with a breeze.

Orienteering race 59:23 [5] *** 6.8 km (8:44 / km) +255m 7:21 / km
spiked:11/16c shoes: VJ Falcons

Day 2 at Fair Hill. A much better run than Saturday but made lots of small errors totalling about 3 minutes. Sloppy in the control circle on 5 controls! Also made two small route choice errors by not reading the detail on the map on two short legs. Even though I consider 3 minutes of errors a reasonably good run, it also happens to be how far I was behind the fastest run of the day on the course. (Woulda , coulda, shoulda....)

Rant: I did not like the choice of the start location and first control. I had trouble finding the start triangle on the map since the line to the first control was hidden in the contours. Unless the Fair Hill powers-that-be required that the start be where it was, there are many better areas to place the start on this map.
