Road Run 35:36 [3] 4.11 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Shorts and T-shirt weather! 61F. One more day of this and then winter arrives. Rt 66N to bridge at Riders Mills and back.

Tuesday Nov 28, 2006 #

Road Run 32:01 [3] 3.64 mi (8:48 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 66S, Richmond Road to Bashford and back. Interesting running on a dirt road in the dark. Fortunately there were only a few small ruts but no potholes. Quite mild at 47F. Legs still tired from the weekend.

Event: NEOC Mt Tom

Orienteering 1:35:55 [3] *** 7.2 km (13:19 / km) +385m 10:31 / km
spiked:18/20c shoes: VJ Falcons

Score-O at Mt. Tom. Western Mass Rules (get n controls where n depends on the course level you choose). Did the "Red" course, 20 out of the 22 possible controls. Didn't push, just concentrated on navigating well and keeping contact. Only missed on 2 controls, probably 3 or 4 minutes worth of errors. Control order was 4-3-5-15-16-18-17-6-19-14-13-12-20-11-10-9-8-7-1-2. Climb is counted by my actual route. Another great weather day for November - 50 and mostly sunny. Nice course by Phil Bricker.

Orienteering race 1:04:45 [4] *** 6.2 km (10:27 / km) +190m 9:03 / km
spiked:10/13c shoes: VJ Falcons

Red course at Ansonia Nature Center. Beautiful day - 50 and sunny. 7 - 8 minutes worth of errors (3 on #10, 2 on #12, the rest spread among 3 other controls). Nice course in challenging but fun terrain.

Orienteering 56:03 [3] *** 4.2 km (13:21 / km)
spiked:10/13c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint/Short course at Ansonia Nature Center (after running Red). Advertised as 2.9k, actually 4.2k. Started out at 5 intensity but lost motivation after #6 and just finished the course at a moderate pace. The control code and description for #6 were wrong and I spent 13 minutes relocating and coming back to the flag which I had initially spiked. I guess I expected more from a "US Team - sponsored" event than a fundamental, fatal error in course-setting. Quite frustrating.

Road Run 27:36 [3] 3.1 mi (8:54 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 66S and back. Just after sunset on a beautiful, sunny day. Low 40's by the time I ran. Needed to get out after two days of riding in the car, sitting and eating.

Tuesday Nov 21, 2006 #

Road Run 34:51 [3] 4.11 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt. 66N to Riders Mills bridge and back. Coldest so far this season, 31F. When it's cold I tend to run faster to get/keep warm. Very clear with lots of stars. Why don't (most) motorists dim their headlights for runners?

Sunday Nov 19, 2006 #

Trail Run 1:00:52 [3] * 6.8 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

Trails at Schodack Island SP. Very flat. Saw three hunters and no deer. Heard one gunshot. Wore an orange shirt. November weather - low 40's and overcast.

Orienteering race 56:42 [5] *** 6.0 km (9:27 / km) +190m 8:09 / km
spiked:17/19c shoes: VJ Falcons

Red course at Peebles Island SP. Good run with only a couple of minutes worth of errors. I've run several times on the map and set courses here a few times so it's a pretty familiar area. Heavy trail network and also places of heavy vegetation, which aren't always accuratey represented since the map is aging. Temps in the 40's and mostly cloudy. Water features were quite full from recent heavy rains and necessitated some last minute course re-design (by Phil H-T) to avoid deep water wading.

Wednesday Nov 15, 2006 #

Road Run 31:39 [3] 3.58 mi (8:50 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

November 15 and 53 degrees! Damp with a bit of fog. 66N and Albany Tpke to the "16 M.F. Albany" milepost (approximately, since I couldn't see it in the dark).

Sunday Nov 12, 2006 #

Orienteering race 46:13 [5] *** 5.95 km (7:46 / km) +60m 7:24 / km
spiked:16/16c shoes: VJ Falcons

Green X course at DVOA Batona 500 A-meet. Fast and furious! A 6km sprint. Lots of trail routes and woods were generally faster than yesterday. Hit all the controls pretty well. Maybe could've been 1-2 minutes faster with cleaner execution. Overcast, 50's and threatening rain (but it didn't start until about an hour after I finished).

Event: BATONA 500

Orienteering race 59:40 [4] *** 6.35 km (9:24 / km) +90m 8:46 / km
spiked:13/17c shoes: VJ Falcons

Green X course at DVOA Batona 500 A-meet on Batsto map. Subtle contours with lots of blueberry. Lost 5 - 7 minutes to errors spread among about 5 controls. Quite warm for November - nearly 70 and partly cloudy.

Orienteering race 15:06 [4] *** 1.75 km (8:38 / km) +10m 8:23 / km
spiked:10/12c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint course B on Batsto map. Interesting course since it primarily required reading vegetation. Tired after running A-meet course. 1 - 2 minutes of errors/hesitation.

Thursday Nov 9, 2006 #

Road Run 27:16 [3] 3.08 mi (8:51 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt. 66N, Albany Tpke and back. No moon tonight, so quite dark. Found a few potholes but fortunately they were small. Maybe carry a light? Naah.

Monday Nov 6, 2006 #

Road Run 34:50 [3] 4.0 mi (8:43 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 32 W and back. Low 40's with the moon out.

Saturday Nov 4, 2006 #

Orienteering race 19:35 [5] *** 2.06 km (9:30 / km) +85m 7:53 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint course at WCOC Sessions Woods event. Ran after I had done the Red course so even though the intensity was there, the speed wasn't. Probably about a minute of errors spread among 3 controls, mostly just getting off the line. Fun course but lots of work because it was all in the woods.

Orienteering race 1:08:55 [4] *** 6.02 km (11:27 / km) +210m 9:45 / km
spiked:12/15c shoes: VJ Falcons

Red course at Sessions Woods. About 5 minutes of errors on 4 different legs. Nice day - 40's and partly sunny. Nice course. Thanks Charlie.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 1:00:00 [1] *** 2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

Wandering around Thacher SP looking for places to hang controls for the Billygoat. Found some - a few reentrants, some rocky ground, a depression, and the top of a hill. :-) It was SNOWING!! and in the upper 30's. And not just flurries. Would be interesting if we had the same weather for the actual event. Total time out was about 2.5hrs but spent lots of time just standing around or moving pretty slowly.

Trail Run 12:40 [3] * 1.3 mi (9:45 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

At Thacher. Wanted to check one more control before it got dark so ran out and back (on trails).

Thursday Nov 2, 2006 #

Road Run 35:11 [3] 4.07 mi (8:39 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 66S and back. 40F, moon out. Tried to run slower (closer to 9:00/mi pace) but apparently failed. Pace felt comfortable and wasn't pushing. I do seem to run faster in cooler weather, probably to stay warm. Maybe I should wear more clothes. :-)
