Snowshoe race 1:13:27 intensity: (9 @0) + (21 @1) + (15 @2) + (16:06 @3) + (56:36 @4) 5.41 mi (13:35 / mi) +278m 11:42 / mi
ahr:149 max:165 shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Moody Spring Snowshoe Race. A fun but tough race. With about 4" of fresh snow, the entire race course was soft, including the snowmobile track which makes up the first and last ~1.2 miles of the race. The middle 3 miles of single track was tougher than last year, when it was a trench about 2 feet deep, because the bottom wasn't as firm. Finished 24th out of 58, about 2 minutes slower than last year. Temps in the upper 20's with light snow at the start.

Around the backyard, trying to keep the pace easy. 3" of new, wet snow on top of the compacted, crusty old base (probably still 6 - 12"deep). Broke through in a few places but mostly stayed on top of the old stuff. Low 30's and overcast.

Hiking 1:00:00 [1] 4.35 mi (13:48 / mi)

Hiking at Sabino Canyon Recreation Area in the Coronado National Forest. The area is located at the very edge of Tucson at the base of the Catalina Mountains (if not for the National forest, Tucson would extend/sprawl further into the foothills so the rich people could have their houses even higher up on the hills). Started at the Visitor Center heading up towards Bear Canyon, then doubling back and heading a bit up Sabino Canyon, which is one of the few places in the area with continuously flowing water, resulting in a riparian/desert ecosystem. Checking out more flora and fauna - no significantly different spottings than in Saguaro NP yesterday. Actual hiking time was about 2 hrs. Drove back to Phoenix afterwards to return to winter on Wedesday.

Earlier in the day we drove up the Sky Islands Scenic Byway which climbs from about 2000' at Tucson to over 8000' (9500' if you hike to the top of Mt. Lemmon) and offers spectacular views in the Catalina Mtns. and of the Tucson valley and the various mountain ranges surrounding it. Upper 60's in the valley, 40 with snow on the ground above ~7000' but gloriously sunny the whole way.

Hiking 1:00:00 [1] 5.19 mi (11:34 / mi) +59m 11:10 / mi

Hike at Saguaro NP East. Meandering around the trail network in the desert. Actually out about 3 hours. Sunny and upper 50's - doesn't get much better than that! :-)

Wildlife spottings include a jackrabbit, some lizards, cactus wrens, gila woodpeckers and a phainopepla. Also heard some coyotes but didn't see them.

And there were lots of saguaros and other assorted cacti.

Orienteering race 1:25:50 [4] *** 7.8 km (11:00 / km)
spiked:11/13c shoes: NB 874

Day 2 at Box Canyon, Blue course. Different part of the map than yesterday but with some overlap. The area the couse used seemed to be more physical and had more cacti (ocotillo 1, Glen 0). Overcast and upper 40's (it is winter afterall) but OK for running.

Orienteering better than yesterday but still made two significant mistakes. Misread a gully for a contour line and must've been looking the wrong way as I passed right by the bag (~2 min). Lost ~6 min on a parallel error down the wrong steep, narrow reentrant leading to my ocotillo encounter (an ocotillo is like a raspberry bush on steroids).

Orienteering race 1:21:40 [4] *** 6.8 km (12:01 / km) +250m 10:09 / km
spiked:11/15c shoes: NB 874

Blue course at TSN O-Club meet on Box Canyon map. Apperently in southern AZ a prediction of rain showers means it will be mostly sunny and 65F, which is pretty nice running weather (even with 25 - 35 mph winds). There were some sprinkles later to vindicate the weatherman.

Map and course were good, terrain quite fun and my orienteering mediocre. Lost contact a few times and lost 10 - 12 minutes total. FR download later. Terrain reminded me of Laramie but with taller grass, much less big rock, and occasional cacti but no sage.

Missed the Moby Dick snowshoe race back home, but not much. :-)

Trails at Schodack Island SP. Trails had all been either groomed for skiing and well packed or snowshoed on previously. They were a bit uneven due to foot traffic (humans, dogs, deer and who knows what else). Running shoes with YakTrax or microspikes would probably have worked, but I wore snowshoes. Overcast with temperature in the mid-30's so pleasant running. Intended a fairly easy run but felt comfortable pushing the pace and going a bit further than initially planned (although I've run the trails here several times, I tend to forget/ignore that doing the trail loop out and back to the south is over 5 miles). Several people out shuffling on skis, one other (walking) on snowshoes.

ahr:128 max:144 shoes: NB878 - #9

Warm-up. Mostly on the road with a few bits on snowmobile trails (the race course). Checking out the race surface (= all snowmobiled trail so no gaiters needed).

Snowshoe race 44:30 intensity: (8 @1) + (6 @2) + (14 @3) + (44:02 @4) 4.71 mi (9:27 / mi) +93m 8:54 / mi
ahr:158 max:162 shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Snowshoe race at Wilton Wildlife Preserve (Camp Saratoga). Upper 20's with some breeze, but not noticeable in the woods. Trail had all been packed by snowmobile and was only soft in a few places, so it favored the road runners (no need to lift the feet much higher than running on a road surface). Most of the course is wide enough to pass easily. The area is glacial terrain, so there are a few ups and downs but they tend to be short and steep (10-15m at a time max).

Race went OK. By the road crossing (at ~5.3km) there was a big gap behind me, so I backed off a little (since scoring for the WMAC/Dion SS Series is by place) although I don't think I could've pushed hard enough to catch anyone ahead of me. Finished 53 out of 162. The field for this race tends to be tougher than last weekend's Saratoga race because it is a qualifier for some end of season event. Lots of food afterwards and a raffle (If they called my number I didn't hear it. I picked up something when they called Janet's number.)

Note: Elevation is probably bogus since the elevation model shows the course to be flat from about 1.2mi on. It's not flat.

Road Run 6:56 intensity: (9 @0) + (42 @1) + (5:32 @2) + (33 @3) 0.68 mi (10:12 / mi)

Cool-down run on the road. Finished up just as Janet was finishing the race course.

4 x 0.25 miles at 7:03 pace with about 2 min recovery (0.2 miles @ ~9:40 pace). After 1.25 mi warmup and followed by running until I hit 4 miles. Time to ease into some speed work.

Saratoga Winterfest Snowshoe Race at Saratoga Spa SP. Conditions were quite good, better than I expected. Rain and sleet yesterday and temperatures just above freezing. Track had been packed out and was a little soft but had good grip. Snow was deep to the side of the track in many places, so you had to pick places to pass judiciously. Quite a contrast to last year when a good portion of the course was more dirt than snow.

Race went fairly well. With the deep snow the trail narrowed very quickly at the start and I pre-seeded pretty well. Finished 31st out of 202. Heart rate a bit higher than in earlier races, but discomfort level wasn't any higher than normal - not sure what that means. Good feed afterwards with lots of homemade chili, stews and baked goods. Plus I won a jar of honey in the raffle.

Snowshoe 8:48 intensity: (2:21 @2) + (6:27 @3) 0.64 mi (13:39 / mi) +8m 13:08 / mi

Cool down run on snowshoes.

Around the back yard, breaking trail on the first loop. There was a crusty layer so i couldn't run very much while breaking trail since my toes would catch during the leg lift. Avoided any faceplants. Mostly followed the trail we had broken before this most recent snowfall since it was even deeper off the trail. Able to run more on the second loop but the snow was still pretty soft. Temperature in the upper 20's, lots of stars and a sliver of moon just setting.

Lots animal tracks, most from small animals light enough to stay on top of the crust. Not much deer traffic with the snow this deep. One possible set of coyote tracks, jumping 6 - 8 feet at a time and landing with all four feet in the same area - a way to deal with deep snow? Snow was too loose to see any distinct footprints but a hair I found in one of the prints was the right color. Prints lead to under the deck where there's bare ground and possible mice to snack on.
