Snowshoe race 1:11:26 [4] 5.62 mi (12:43 / mi) +300m 10:54 / mi
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Snowshoe race at Moody Spring in Dubuque SF, Hawley, MA. About 2 feet of snow in the past week made things interesting. Course was a lollipop, ~1.3 mi on a snowmobile road, a 3 mile loop of single track, then back on the snowmobile road. Single track was a trench two snowshoe-widths wide and knee to mid-thigh deep. The snow was wet so it was packed down by the leaders but was still uneven and variable in the bottom of the trench. A hilly course which meant lots of "walking". Temperature was in the low 30s, so comfortable for racing and hanging around afterwards.

Race went fairly well. Passed two people in the single track and got passed by one, so I was in about the right position as we left the road. Was able to continue pushing on the road run in. Haven't seen results yet. Apparently we ran past Moody Spring, but I never saw it (a pipe with water running out of it).

Tough day on the body. Lower back tightened up before the race after shoveling snow (to get a car out of the way so I could get to the parking lot plus clearing out around the car after I parked). Big bruise on my left ankle where I kept hitting it with the snowshoe. Plus all the normal aches and pains from racing.

Road Run 31:33 [3] 3.58 mi (8:48 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

About 6" of slush in the driveway but the roads were just wet, so a road run it was. Above freezing and still some light. Cleared the slush with the snowblower later.

Snowshoe race 43:55 [4] 4.68 mi (9:23 / mi)
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Snowshoe race at Camp Saratoga/Wilton Wildlife Preserve. Much better snow conditions than last weekend but still a few bare spots (and one paved road crossing). Course is in glacial terrain so there are some hills, none very big (10 - 15m max climb/descent), but a few are steep. Last km of race is particularly hilly, including a 10m descent followed by a u-turn back up 15m. Mostly cloudy with temps in the upper teens. Not mentally into racing so didn't push too much early in the race. Got into it a bit better in the second half. Finished 46 of 123 (a minute faster would've gained about 6 places, a minute slower would've been 8 further back).

S on 66. 30, windy and snowing. Roads were mostly just wet (and salty). HTFU training on the return into the wind.

Snowshoe race 27:10 [5] 3.1 mi (8:46 / mi)
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Saratoga Winterfest 5k snowshoe race at Saratoga Spa SP. More dirt and ice than snow with probably 25% of the course bare. Cover was pretty thin everywhere else. Tough on the snowshoes. Finished 16th out of 92 (this race drew 196 last year). Was 4 minutes faster than last year but that was with some snow on the course. Sunny but cold with temps in the upper teens at race time.

Forerunner did not want to locate satellites, so no track. Janet's track shows the route. Discovered later that I had inadvertantly "upgraded" the gps chipset in the Forerunner to Ver. 0.00. Oops - now fixed.

Road Run warm up/down 14:00 [3] 1.5 mi (9:20 / mi)

About a mile before and a half mile after.

Road Run 40:09 [3] 4.57 mi (8:47 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

South on 66 and back. Left work a bit early so there was some light, at least when I started. Winter is nearly over. 30F.

Note

Orienteering (on foot, in shoes) for tomorrow in NJ canceled due to snow. Snowshoe race on Sunday (in Saratoga Springs, 200 miles to the north) questionable due to lack of snow. So climate change is making it snow down south? WTF.

Wednesday Feb 3, 2010 #

Treadmill 32:06 [3] 3.5 mi (9:10 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

Mind-numbing.

Treadmill 6:00 [2] 0.4 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

Cool down walk - much of it uphill at reasonably brisk pace.
