Red course at First Water, hosted by GPHXO. I knew that the contours on this map were not as good as they could be (based on USGS maps with 20 or 40 foot contours) so I was real careful to the first few controls to be sure I was using features which actually showed on the map. Lost probably 12 minutes on control 6 because the version of the map used for printing did not reflect an update which showed the control feature (a pit) where it actually was in the terrain. Off line to 8 and wandered along the stream a bit to find the control. Up the wrong arm of a drainage on the way to 10 which cost several minutes. Overall course design was very good, unfortunately the map is not. Overcast, 50s and wet underfoot from yesterday’s rain (and quite muddy in the parking lot). A few encounters with spikey things.

Score-O at Needle Vista (in the daylight; there was a night version later on a different part of the map which I skipped). 19 controls and 530 points available - I visited 14 of them for 370 points. Really spectacular area scenery-wise. Quite physical with plenty of climb, lots of rockiness underfoot and the usual desert pokey stuff. But, to make the event truly different, it was raining off and on - and not just sprinkles, off and on moderate rain. So there was flowing water in all the drainages and the ground was soft in many places. Perhaps my biggest accomplishment of the day was to have zero cholla encounters.

And, with rain in the desert comes flash flooding, which delayed the departure of many of us by a couple of hours when a drainage about a mile down the road turned into a river across the road.

Walk and jog from parking to where the o-map actually starts. Didn’t see the streamers marking the way and followed the Sarasota Trail, which worked fine once I figured out the right way to go at a trail junction (there was a map of the area trails posted there and I matched it up with trails on the o-map).

Self-timed Score-O on Cat Mountain map in Tucson Mountain Park. There were 14 bags out there, I visited 12 of them, skipping the two easternmost ones. Desert terrain, not steep, so lots of drainages to use for navigation (and also lots of drainages to get confused by). And plenty of pokey things - I had pretty much avoided cholla attacks until today, but had to stop several times today to deal with them. Missed significantly on three controls, twice not reading the contours and drainages correctly and on the other by checking every boulder in the area except the one with the bag (a few were more prominent but it looks like they’re covered by the control circle). Overcast and breezy but still in the upper 60s.

Walking 22:12 intensity: (13:50 @0) + (8:22 @1) 1.69 km (13:08 / km)

Back to parking. Followed the streamers this time.

Sprint training on the U of AZ campus - a 2.2k corridor exercise. Nicely designed by Cristina, getting progressively more challenging. I did fine until near the end where there were no building edges shown in the corridor. Doubled back after taking a minute to figure it out.

Orienteering 34:56 intensity: (30 @0) + (54 @1) + (9:24 @2) + (18:22 @3) + (5:23 @4) + (23 @5) *** 4.72 km (7:25 / km)

Part 2 of Sprint training at U of AZ, a 3.2+k sprint course with points marked only with a pin flag or a piece of orange duct tape. Sloppy early and then a big error on 9 where I misinterpreted the description and went to a lower level than I should have (had there been full-size markers, I probably would have spotted it and not headed to the lower level). Several of the other misses would have been less severe with regular flags. Still lots of fun and good practice. Pretty long for a sprint. Another fine day, sunny and up into the 70s (but cooler while we ran).

Edit: measured straight line course length, based on the scale bar printed on the map and got about 4.0k. The 125m scale bar is 2.5cm, so the map is printed at 1:5000, even though it says 1:4000. Looks like the 3.2k is calculated as if it was 1:4000. Not a big deal, it was training, but it helps explain the 4.7k distance my GPS measured (and the time it took).

Picked up 8 controls (5 pin flags, 3 pieces of tape). Controls 13-20, but mostly in reverse order. Easier when you’re walking and you’ve been there before.

Hike to Bridal Wreath Falls in Saguaro NP, starting at the Douglas Spring Trailhead. And there was water coming over the falls (as expected since it’s been wet enough to green the desert up a bit). Hung around at the falls for about a half hour (with the watch stopped) then headed back at a more leisurely pace than the climb, being a “rest day” fo r SWSW. Some clouds but pleasant in the lower 70s. AP climb calculation seems high - probably closer to the 300m claimed in the trail description.

Street-O in Bisbee, AZ. Aerial photo with 21 locations circled and multiple choice questions to answer to verify visiting the location. The same map used for the event two years ago, so I had already visited the locations, but didn’t remember with certainty any of the answers (and still had to navigate). The map is quite dark and the numbers and circles were printed in purple so I could only see them in full sunlight and at a full stop.

I traversed the course this year counterclockwise, heading first to the lower part of the town. Did one bushwhack from 9 to 8, a steep climb up a spur. Only significant error was when I missed a passageway going from 2 to 3 and ended up going right by 1 without realizing it. Recovered OK, partly by recalling that control 3 was at the Circle K.

Lots of fun and good navigating practice using different information than usual. Very nice day - sunny and low 70s.

Cholla Chase at Catalina SP. Mass start handicapped race, needing to get X out of 7 controls in a box, depending on age and gender. Followed by 6 controls of point-to-point orienteering (plus a control to punch at the start of the point-to-point). I needed to do four controls in the box. Did B-A-C-D, which may not have been the best choice since in involved a pretty steep descent between B and A. Didn’t execute well on the first three controls, dropping a couple of minutes on each. The rest went OK but I could still feel the effects of yesterday’s outing. Sunny and 60s to low 70s.

Red course at Catalina SP, Day 2 of SWSW. 6.9k, 250m. Gnarly terrain, sharp vegetation and challenging navigation with most of the bags well obscured by the feature or vegetation. Sunny, upper 60s to low 70s.

OK run until the second to last control where I went brain dead, drifted way off line, relocated OK and then had trouble finding which of the many shallow reentrants the bag was actually in once I got close. Took almost 20 minutes on a 4 minute leg. Several other small errors which I corrected quickly. Lost 3 or 4 minutes on what was a pretty straightforward control when I headed towards an unmapped lone tree (=saguaro) rather than the mapped one. Despite my time losses, I did alright relative to the other 60+ guys who think they can still do Red courses.

Javelina Hustle on Box Canyon map. Short version - 5.7k, 240m. Mass start event with a 3 control box (visit in any order), a forked leg and finishing up with three controls on a line-O. Spur and reentrant terrain in open grassland (very little cactus but a few small scratchy plants). Pretty runnable except for the occasional areas of rocks partly obscured by grass. Great weather - sunny and upper 50s but feeling quite a bit warmer.

OK run. Lost about 3 minutes on #8 when I overshot it and then overshot again in the other direction after relocating. Another minute lost on 12 when I went one reentrant too far. Did the box 5-3-4, which seemed like the only reasonable choice. Took the left fork (8-10-11).

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Double Arch trail but only part of the way up to the arch as the trail was pretty steep and kind of gnarly. GPS track shows that we weren’t “almost there” when we turned around. So good decision.
