Rogaining race (WRC 2014 Black Hills) 23:52:00 [4] 93.0 km (15:24 / km) +3660m 12:52 / km

A quick wrap up - we over planned quite badly with about 112k to almost clear the course, to the point that Wil thought it prudent to go get a 20 pointer nearby at the beginning just in case. But within the first 2 hrs we fell 1hr behind schedule and everything was turned upside down. Add to that a good dose of not drinking enough in the morning and Wil probably having trouble with the altitude as he was struggling from the start.

We were going ok from the start to 25 - 31 - 22 - 90 - 91 - 69 and then the wheels came off as we descended down to 102 too far to the left and hit really steep and dense log fall and then had to go back up the stream and climb around a cliff to the control and back again. That shut down the fast movement and left us wondering what will become of our course going forward, and the immediate problem was that we had planned to hit the first water drop at 5pm but now looks like 6 or later (I think it ended up being 630pm and we ran dry for a bit). So we continued and readjusted the course, adding a bit of dead road work to get the water and back. We also cut out the SE corner and eventually gave up on the NW corners - from what I heard both were ok to drop - and I was happy we got the NE corner as this was quick nice ground.

Overall - very rough terrain. Log fall after log fall and lots of jagged spikes to pretty much kill you if you tripped and fell badly.

About 730pm we dropped packs, did not take our headlights!, and did an out and back to 92 which ended up being one of the rougher legs and then followed a path back to the road and had a bit of a time trying to find our packs which were about 300-400m away and 20m off the road in some trees - and we only have about 10mins of dusk left.

Then walking on the marked track we had to solve a badly marked road problem in the dark to get to 81, but felt better after that and things started going better.

tbc...

Added up the score and got 3130 (erroneously added 29) 3020 (corrected on 22 Aug - missed adding 100, 68 instead of 52, and still had 29) 3110 (corrected on 23 Aug, feeling quite confident about this score now), so from what felt like an unrecoverable start we ended up fairly chuffed after looking at the route we ended up with.

Awaiting the official results. Unf a tech problem with the SI scoring system prevented the results from being know and they are sitll working on it.

Total of 49 controls found - in order were
25, 31, 22, 90, 91, 69, 102, 95, 57, 65
93, 74, 103, W5, 55, 64, 92, 81, 80, 47, 85, 100,
41, 60, 70, 71, 105, 78, W3, 36, 52, 68, 50, 45
54, 29, 67, W2, 38, 77, 83, 104, 73, 82, 79
61, 51, 32, 43, 66, 94, 72, 40, 21

Aug 22 - GPS trace uploaded, but it looks like my tracker stopped at 1121am, about 2.5k and 60m in elevation from the end - which I've added to the totals. I am guessing we came in around 1152am.

Aug 23 - correction. I omitted us getting 100 (85-100-41), getting 68 instead o 52 (78-W3-36-68-50), and we did not go down the hill and get 29. So new TOTAL is 3110. So far looking good for us on the crowdscore spreadsheet at 4th overall and 1st MV. Still awaiting official results, work is in progress, they are downloading the data from each brick and then having 3 independent parties recreate the results, no doubt a few more days yet.

Aug 28 - Our map with route here Andre's digital map archive. The logger stopped about 2.5k from the finish - we finished going up the hill to get 21 and then HH.

From our trace it appears 85 might have been misplaced about 200m to the NE. Luckily we saw the control reflecting in the dark to our left.

Aug 31 - provisional results puts us at 11th overall and 2nd MV. Here are the complete results, and a great analysis showing each team's route choice from Brian Moore.

A walk around some of the controls on the model course. Amazingly I was the only one there, and then one other guy when I got back to the start. I guess more will do it tomorrow.

Interesting country - the terrain was quite managable, much like WA rolling hills area. But the vegetation completely different and quite slow going in areas with lots of high grass, seeds and fallen timber. Even the open bits have a lot of rocks and logs under the tall grass, so not sure how runnable it'll be. Some patches of clear under forest mainly. Lots of small topo features that don't show on the map and could throw you if you don't keep track of distance well. Very warm. Saw a big antelope scatter off into the forest a couple of times and a fox.
