Running 1:15:00 [3]

I'm pretty sure this is about the right time, maybe a bit more. First time with the Tuesday Night Running Group Dave McMahon special.

Had some ultra dude come up to me on the run back from P10 to Fortune and keep telling me to shorten my stride in a wicked French accent. Look dude, just because you look like Phil and you're carrying a water bottle in one of those hands things, doesn't mean I want to hear from you that my stride is too long and bouncy-bouncy. I'm rather aware of this... Even after you told me the tird-time.

Running 45:00 [1]

That was not fun, just a painful crawl in humid weather along the Rideau. Felt really really blah.

Took my bike into Tall Tree tonight for conversion into a single speed as well as a tune-up. Now need new helmet as well.

Running 1:15:00 [2]

Run up King Mountain and then some Skyline thrown in with Freddy.

Stopped off at Euro-Sport Canada on the way home to talk to Duncan, some good expensive stuff there. And Rossi stuff as well.

Note

Brendan Shields posted something silly about Canadian Champions being afraid of getting their feet wet due to the COF uncrossable rule (which I think makes perfect sense).

Here are my top five toughest Canadian Champions; order doesn't matter much, and I'm sure I'm forgetting people.

5. Brian Graham - back when I was in shape I was running together with BG in a B meet in the south part of the Gats. I dropped him on a trail, we get to a woods section and leaves me behind instantly. This is total ice-storm damaged Gats and he can fly through the woods.

4. Ross Burnett - a tough Northern guy who won't put up with much, be it trees or whomever else. I would put Benoit Latourneau in this category as a hard-man from the Quebec woods who has two levels of intensity: on or off (see also Duca, Nick)

3. Mike Smith - dude runs in the woods with a snarl and I remember as a junior actually hearing Mike yell whilst crashing through green. This is what happens when you grow up running through "open woods" in NB. Mike also strangely has my Dad's exact running style; I noticed it again at the end of the Middle last week

2. Ted de St. Croix - you need to be tough to carry around all those COC medals. Watching Tedro finish any race and you know that he's left all he has on the course (Hammer is the same way).

1. Pam James - rugby player. Green undergrowth versus Pam? Bet everything you have on Pam. Conversation with Pam at the finish: Wow, it was thick woods out there. Pam: oh, I found it fine.

I don't know the 70 and early 80s scene to comment on those, but I wouldn't want to go into a control with Steve Pearson, Russ Evans and especially Gord Hunter.

NOTE: Mark Adams probably should be on this too. What I remember from Mark racing is how calm he always looked, especially at the finish. Others are swearing and getting stressed out, Mark is looking cool. He also always had a beard which makes everyone look tough.

Orienteering Race race 3:05:21 [4]

Well, the woods were nice.

Orienteering Race 19:24 [5]

Sprint Race at NRC.

You can fake a lot of stuff in the world, but fitness is not one of them.

Orienteering Race race 53:30 [4]

Middle Race, COCs

Running 25:00 [1]

Running on the Meech Trail with Special K, this is the going out section as we were both chatting about how sluggish we were feeling.

Spent the whole afternoon out in the sun announcing at the Sprint Fundraiser at Carleton which was lots of fun, even if my throat was hurting. Lots like lots of fun for the races and Robbie and Jeff did a great job with it.

Running 20:00 [4]

For some reason even though we were both hurtin, we decided to pick it up and hammer on the way home.

Felt like I was racing, although who knows how fast I actually was going, especially on the hills.

Shins getting sore. Haven't quite gotten over the cold yet.

Running 35:00 [3]

Fast run along the Rideau River, was running out of time between work and getting to Carleton for the JWOC talk.

Monday Aug 16, 2010 #

Running 30:00 [1]

Run along the river to check out the outside of a house I might end up living in. Will hopefully find out on Wed or Thurs.

The lungs still are hurting from the cold and I was coughing up some lovely stuff during the run.

Running race 1:10:00 [3]

Orienteering while sick and feeling toast at Lac Beauchamp. Felt good on the first loop, but reality soon sunk in.

Saturday Aug 14, 2010 #

Hiking 2:00:00 [1]

Hike of Wolf Trail with Jake and Sarah who are visiting from Montreal.
Feeling like death in the morning with my cold.

Wednesday Aug 11, 2010 #

Running 1:00:00 [2]

Run up King and then back on Ridge with Kailey (I don't know if she has an Attackpoint style nickname yet). Perfect temperature to run, no bugs.

Looked at another two apartments, things are starting to get a bit worrisome. One in Sandy Hill for $850, top floor of a big house, bit sketchy hallway, but cozy in a good way inside. Second one was more in the Market and was no dice right away.

Looks like I'll have to break the $1000 to score a good spot.

Orienteering Race 30:00 [3]

Cool little sprint-ish race at Britannia Beach by the Kemptsters, first event back in Ottawa. Decided to stop looking at my map when I entered the box and just force everything to fit, which meant I went directly off in 90 degs away. Very, very rusty, especially in and out of controls.

Sunday Aug 8, 2010 #

Running 1:05:00 [2]

Run with Freddy in the Gats from his new estate. Then, coffee on the deck.

The hills of Gatineau Park are exactly what I need.

Saturday Aug 7, 2010 #

Running 50:00 [1]

Run along the river before party at my place by the girls.

Ran to Beechwood Village to check that out. Not bad, I could live there.

Bought myself a commuter beater bike for $75, an old Empire road bike, red. Pretty good deal.

Tuesday Aug 3, 2010 #

Running 30:00 [1]

Really short river run after lack of sleep the past two nights.

First day on the job with NRCan. I'm still not sure what I'm going to be doing, but at least working with nice people. Dress code is rather slack so the suits won't be worn as much.

Just a complete monsoon after work and got drenched. Will get to the Gats soon hopefully.

Monday Aug 2, 2010 #

Running 45:00 [1]

First run back in Ottawa along the Rideau River on a hot night after the drive from Toronto.
