Running warm up/down 30:00 [3] 3.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Yellow Swoops

Ran to the start slowing getting quicker. Once there ran around on the warm up map mainly to get into the scale which was different from yesterday and also different to what I have been running on most of the year. Went to the controls and looked at what was mapped and what was not. Then some hills sprints and drills.

After a jog with Kirsten and Huw.

Orienteering race 1:00:31 [5] 6.6 km (9:10 / km) +330m 7:20 / km
shoes: Yellow Swoops

JK long.
First 3 fine, good attackpoints and plans. Slightly overshot 4 lost about 15secs but was able to sort it out quickly as had known where I was. Pushed hard on 5 as planned and then could see where I wanted to go so was able to run hard especially on the hill as I knew that suited me. Had planned my way to 6 already so that was good too.
Need more confidence on 7, kept stopping and starting even though I knew where I was everytime I stopped. Think I needed to have picked out 2 or 3 key things on route, I had an attackpoint though and then when I found it I realised how easy the control was and could have pushed much harder had my plan been better. I had the same sort of approach on 8, need to be more positive and trust myself as I can do it. Expected to have been caught after those two controls but hadn't. 9 was again a long leg, which was a bit like 7 in the way I executed, just didn't have the confidence but did nothing wrong, was fine on the first bit as had a good plan but faffed on the second half. Need to work on these kind of legs and being confident in running hard to my attackpoint.
It really surprised me to know that at 9 I was in 2nd, guess it shows even being hesitant isn't as bad as making mistakes and my running kept me in contention.
Bex did catch me after 9 which was a disaster for us both. Did go fast out of control was there was a definite catching feature and it wasn't a difficult control, however saw this crossing point and thought I was an idiot and had somehow come too high, so went down the hill expecting to see a control, There wasn't one. Knew not to go any further as could see the flat area below. Saw a control higher but it was right next to the crossing point so knew it wasn't mine, ran along the crags below and eventually went up to that control which was mine! SO annoyed. Turns out that there was a second crossing point right next to our control which wasn't marked on our maps but is marked on the other courses map! I admit I should not have lost over 3mins but when I could see such a prominant feature on the ground with a ladder and tapes I assumed it was on my map. There was another control which mum had which was 100m further back from the wall which would have been perhaps a better control as then the crossing point could have been shown.
Anwyay 11 was fine, 12 wasn't amazing, Bex went too far but I realised I needed to climb before it was too late. Should have went straighter to 13 as ended up too high, had been going lower but got pulled high, should ignore others! Wee control pick at the end was fine.
Really dsappointed when i came in. Forgetting about all the other mistakes/poor orienteering just taking out what happened at 9 would have given me another decent result! I guess these things happen, Almost half the class had significant time losses here.

Again prepared in same way as yesterday and it was reallyhelpful as knew what features to pick out. Need to attack more, be confident as can do, was doing well:). If someone had told me before the JK I would have came 4th I wouldn't have believed them so I should be happy but obviously as I am a perfectionist I know I could have done a lot better. Training is working as set good times on the hills.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [3] 2.0 km (12:30 / km)
shoes: Yellow Swoops

Initial jog around the car park a couple of times and then up to the finish to have a final check out of the last control etc. Then to the start starting to get faster. Some sprints, drills and generally getting my legs moving.

Jog with Dad after back towards the start.

Orienteering race 42:16 [5] 4.9 km (8:38 / km) +120m 7:41 / km
shoes: Yellow Swoops

JK middle.
Took the first one steady making sure I got into the map, good attack point and no problem. Took a safe route to 2 which worked really well as a few people seemed to have trouble here. Caught Bex here and had a slight 10sec hesitation at 4 but knew exactly where I was so was able to find the control quickly. Took a different route to 8 as running looked better closer to the fence but the route wasn't quicker as Bex got away and splits show I lost half a minute. Caught back up, slight hesitation, stopped too early on 12 as I thought the control was on a re-entrant and it was actually on a shallow depression so looked in the wrong place. Got 14 ahead again and ran off in the direction, plan was poor with not a well defined attackpoint. Wanted to go faster up the hill but was in a queue then told myself to just read the map and stop worrying about run in, control wasn't where I expected it but went to go to it anyway and for some reason I thought Bex hadn't punched it and because I knew I had a poor plan I assumed I had got of line so went of to relocate and did on the ridge just before 16 where it then hit me that that had been 15. Got 15, back to 16, felt really annoyed but tried to stay in control, good plan and attackpoint to 17 but then 18 was too jumpy, trying to run to fast resulting in me stop starting, back to the way I have been orienteering without properly visualising when the control was actually easy. Told myself to concentrate and much better to 19 and 20, with good attackpoints enabling me to use my speed. A bit hasty as 21 panicked a bit and stopped too early right before the control. No problems from then on, pushed hard.
Obviously really pleased to be 3rd but disappointed all the same as should definitely been under 40.

Preperation really worked as knew exactly what tecniques to use and by looking at an old map and telling dad how I would do a course he planned on it I knew exactly what features to use as handrails and attackpoints. Kept having to tell myself to use my compass.

Event: JK 2011

Running warm up/down 40:00 [3] 3.0 km (13:20 / km)
shoes: Asics GT-2150

Initially with Dad we went for a jog with the warm up map, getting into the scale and then into the warm up controls running between them and planning our own legs. Focused on staying in contact at all times.

Then a while later before the race, did some faster running getting the legs moving and then back onto the map again working on the scale/pacing, talking things through at pace both dad and I were orienteering really well and knew what we had to do.

Jog with Dad around the streets after.

Orienteering race 17:00 [5] 2.1 km (8:06 / km) +45m 7:19 / km
shoes: Asics GT-2150

JK Sprint.
Something new to me, I didn't go fast enough. I had heard so much about it being hard and tricky and how you couldn't go fast that I set of slow to make sure I didn't make mistakes. First one wasn't great as it was the opposite side of the fence but after that I was generally ok just very cautious. That I can deal with however I failed to speed up in the second half where it really did get easier and I could have used my speed.
Disappointed, needed to realise the change in terrain and plan ahead a lot better. On the positive side it could have been a lot worse....

Running 31:19 [3] 6.0 km (5:13 / km)
shoes: asics pink

Easy run in the evening sun as had been away all day. Ran down the trim track up towards the gleabe.
Took the JK middle map and focused on visualising what the terrain would look like, shapes etc and what was up/down.
At the gleabe did 2x100m checking my pacing.
Then ran around the high park.
After that switched maps to a campus sprint map and focused on planning legs and choosing the best route not just the first one I see.
Went up Gala hill, down the casltegate, friars and home.

Note

ASP massage today, legs feel sooo good:).
