Note

First event of the year for the Greater Boston Youth Orienteering Series at Beaver Brook. Not sure if to log anything, though. Spent about 1.5 hr out in the woods rolling out and rolling back in the string-O course, but wouldn't say it was very intense. Spent the rest of the day standing around instructing families at the demo-O station. I had 2-3 families that rather quickly got the idea of how to orient the map and navigate the woods and which all went on to do either the white or white+yellow courses. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them come back if they can manage to squeeze orienteering in between soccer and all other spring activities. Fun to have such a great turn out with more than 200 starts and a lot of kids running very fast!

Walking 55:00 [3]

Spent all day doing cleaning and home improvement projects so I urgently needed a break. Walked my regular loop around Storrow and Noanet ponds.
5 PM

Running 5:00 [3]

The running yesterday didn't seem to have aggravated my knee too much so I did some more structured running today (1 min jogging and 5 min walking for 30 min).

Walking 55:00 [3]

Got out early as the forecast called for rain and snow around noon. Great weather while I was out there and I was overdressed. Knee fine until the end when it started to ache in a very non-specific way. Stretching and icing when I got home.

Running 5:00 [3]

The trails were soft and inviting so I couldn't resist doing some running to see how the knee and foot would handle it. Ran 5 short stretches of perhaps 30s-1 min each on flat surface. Wouldn't say that the knee hurts, but it felt uncomfortable, stiff, and tight. Stretch in the foot, but not pain.

Unspecified (Deep water cardio) 45:00 [3]

Another class at the Y. Mixed experience. The instructor was severely obese and stood on the side of the pool and alternated yelling names of exercises without any additional instructions and chitchatting with the regulars. I would have been completely lost if the participants hadn't been very welcoming and friendly and willing to show what to do. Got a good work-out in the end (my shoulders and back are quite sore as I write this), but was recommended by pretty much everybody to try the Friday morning class which has a different instructor. May try that next week.
3 PM

Strength 30:00 [3]

PT exercises. Still avoiding the one-legged calf raises with bent knee as my Achilles has been achy in the mornings (nothing serious, but better playing and safe).

Gym (Pilates) 1:00:00 [3]

Same Pilates class as last week, but with slightly different exercises (more obliques).

Aerobics 15:00 [3]

Elliptical.

Walking 1:05:00 [3]

On trails in the woods. Tried to keep a brisk pace and both knee and foot felt rather good with only a very vague distant discomfort. Quite a difference from when walking off trail the other day.
12 PM

Strength 30:00 [3]

PT leg exercises. Omitted the one-legged calf raises with bent leg as they provoke a dull ache in my right Achilles. May add them back once I have done the two-legged a few more times.

Alternating 2 laps breast stroke, 2 laps crawl, and 1 lap leg kicks.
