Orienteering 31:00 [3] 4.0 km (7:45 / km)
OV Relay champs. A fun day and a great atmosphere that was enhanced greatly by David J's rap introduction. Brilliant. I tried as hard as hard as I could as last leg runner in a team with James and Rod. Made no mistakes and navigated really well. Just too slow again up hills. Was 7 minutes behind the best on my course which is not too bad I think.
There were some issues on both days of this weekend which seem to highlight problems with a sport that revolves around volunteers.
The incorrect control codes on Sat would in the past have resulted in course cancellation but the runners who had problems were just reinstated and advised to suck it up.
There were some issues with the map with respect to mapping of the green and some of the tracks. Most had no problems with it but it just seems that the orienteers in victoria just shrug there shoulders and cope to the best of there ability.
Near enough is now OK and the element of luck in orienteering is acceptable.
Runners on course 5 were told that the scale was 1:10000 but actually it turned out to be 1:7500. This was on the map but after a couple made errors they decided to check their scale.
Several control descriptions were wrong. Ride symbol was used instead of vegetation boundary. Linear marsh was used instead of a dry ditch. On one course the linear marsh symbol was for both a linear marsh and a vegetation boundary.
All these are only small things but do indicate a acceptance of dropping standards in Orienteering in Victoria.
