r.calf too sore to contemplate running so decided to walk around some of the controls at the Aston Hall Park event.
Park full of locals - mostly interested and very pleasant, but one area full of looser youths barracking the runners and vandalising the controls. I really wouldnt have put controls in that area as that behaviour was entirely predictable.

After yesterday's Weston trip and a hard day today I was pretty tired by the time I got home to get changed. A bit of driving music on tha way woke me up though.
clockwise run again but sun was in my eyes on the descent through the horses to the path at the back of the church. I missed it and got way too low and had to come back - cost 45secs? - doh! then i felt very disheartened and didnt push hard enough on the next uphill. Time was the same as my trial run 2 weeks ago, 40 secs slower than 6yrs ago but 2 secs faster than 11yrs ago

Running really well - Bambi definitely coming out to play - but orienteering appalingly - complete failure to map features on ground with those on the map and vice versa!! 12.30mins of errors!!!!!!
1- unmapped veg bdy meant I looked in parallel reentrant +0.30
2- couldnt find ride from pool found vague path instead which petered out
but bought me to an area of pits 100m from the pit i was looking for +2.00
3- ok
4- couldnt see wet pit among otherpits due to high bracken +0.30
5- chased Barry.E along ride and left it too late went below reentrant and missed the knoll +1.30
6- ok
7- platform in bracken well hidden wouldnt have found it if hadnt seen Graham.U on it +3.00
8-10 ok
11- fasted split but poorly executed route +0.30
12- couldnt see start of ride in high bracken, dithered at stream x-ing +1.00
13- ok
14- tried to find ride through brambles/bracken couldnt should have stayed high +0.30
15- poor route out of 14 then got disorientated found big depression but failed to orientate the map properly+0.30
16- ok
17- heavy fall into brambles, got completely entangled +1.30
F- 90 error from control ran at least 500m instead of 200m +1.00

Baggeridge Green
Rain - lots of it! and it was cold too.
Started badly in the car park when I discovered that I had no shoes (or rather I had Marian's shoes) so I had to run in my old walking shoes which I have never run in. The goretex liner on these is split so water gets in but doesnt get out again, so they gradually filled with water so it was like running with bags of water on my feet - pretty heavy!
Any how wrapped up warm in two layers + waterproof and went for an easy run with the intention of abandoning if the shoes werent upto the job.
Soon couldnt read the map or see the terrain due to the rain and misting on my glasses but soldiered on.
stuffed up exit from 1 lost lots of time - long run to 2 but had to keep stopping to read the map (story of the whole run)- overran to 5 by a looong way before turning back - missed access to 6 thru dk.grn & had to go around - slow across slope to mismapped 7 - 11 was depression in white wood with thigh high bracken! (actually mapped in clearing but I didnt see clearing on map and it didnt feature on ctrl desc) took a while till I realised it was in a clearing - dithered deciding how to get into 13 - couldnt find low route from 15 as all paths seemed to go up and in the wrong direction, very confusing - 16 required a bit of mountaineering to get up out of control

had to attack this 3 trunked prehistoric new zealand thingy that had died during the cold weather - really hard to saw through even though its not very dense but as its very fibrous the saw snags constantly - my arm hurts

did this clockwise for the first time - needed to stop and hunt the route as I came back up from the church so I lost 30 secs doing that, otherwise went out slightly easy and didnt oush downhill - needed to walk coming up from church til i rejoined the main track

so 28.41 isnt bad at all considering, would hope to knock a minute off that on the night.

Nottingham City Race C
Struggled to see the red circles (and particularly numbers) when on the Grey/Olive consequently slow to 1 as i couldnt find it on the map. Also got so fixated trying to look ahead to locate 6&7 on the map that I missed out 5 - coulnt see the number 5 on th grey and I usually rely on finding the nimbers.
Lots of other errors esp poor route to 10 (didnt see that one must go via 11 and so thru route was a must) thought 1 was at 13 when i was at 14 so coulnt find 15 for ages! Misthumbed map for 25 and got disorientated. etc

Itchington Holt (Green)
nice small wood with plenty of features to keep me happy.
might have done the Blue but it was a 4.4km Norwegian so I didnt fancy it - if it had been say <3km Norwegian the id have done it.
Anyway, started a minute behind AB and almost caught him at 1. Passed him on the way to 3. Round to 4 (the white wood was sometimes a bit green so I didnt risk going thru) path to 5 (missed 5 - tree/thicket? and lost 1-2mins and AB got ahead) thru for 6, hit it bang on but didnt see it and faffed and lost another 45secs. Passed Ab at 9. Good thru to 12. Went wrong way on path out of 12 and loast 20secs. Blew 13 bigtime lost 3.5 minutes. went past the ride (coz i was looking for a ditch) came back almost on the ctrl but again saw a ride when I thought I was looking for a ditch and then went back and ran around rides/paths completely disorientated!. AB got ahead again. Faffed in circle at 15. wnt thru for 16 when should have gone round (lots of green) lost 30secs+ AB got ahead. Passed AB to 17 then stuffed up 18 by goung thru and getting lost in thick veg short of ctrl lost another minute- still stayed ahead of AB though.

all in all eyesight problems meant I couldnt see ctrl/feature when in dim wood also couldnt read map properly. overall lost approx 7 mins
