Note

Drove to the Grampians today and did a few walks up to the Pinnicles and the Nerve Test, McKenzie Falls and we stopped to check out Zummsteins. Then we drove to the Northern Grampians and camped at Stapylton Camp Ground. One day old curry never tasted so good!

Orienteering race (Christmas 5 Days) 49:26 [3] * 5.3 km (9:20 / km)
spiked:22/22c

Sprint race around Ballarat University.

Had to leave really early this morning to make it to Ballarat for my 8am start. It was 8 degrees C when we arrived! Then it started to drizzle just before my start which made me feel like an ice block. I had a good run though, and only made one 4 minute mistake and a couple of poor route choices.

Susanne one the whole 5 day carnival for the women - yay! She ran really well each day, even after doing a MTBO event on day two as well as the foot O. Amazing!

We went to Daylesford for the NYE parade after a restful afternoon and a wander around Gong Gong reservoir on the way home. I think I was asleep by about 11.45pm and missed the NYE celebration but that's ok - I was tired!

Orienteering race (Christmas 5 Days) 1:38:52 [3] *** 5.8 km (17:03 / km)
spiked:17/17c

St George Lake East

Made quite a few mistakes today - I think I must have been tired! More gold mining detail today but thankfully not quite as technical as Creswick. I slipped over several times on the wet foliage underfoot and decided that my running shoes are not the best for orienteering in the rain!

After we got home and had lunch we went for a walk to the Daylesford Botanical Gardens and admired the beautiful view from the top of the hill there. Tyson was bored in Melbourne so drove up and met us after dinner. We probably weren't the best company as we were all buggered! A great time had by all.

Orienteering race (Christmas 5 Days) 1:59:06 [2] **** 6.2 km (19:13 / km) +215m 16:22 / km

Creswick Diggings - Gold mining bonanza!

OK. I've never seen this kind of detail on a map before! I struggled to finish this course but persevered and completed it eventually. It was amazing watching people pop in and out of the complex erosion terrain like rabbits. I definitely need to practice this kind of map more before I feel even remotely confident!

Sus, Lachlan and I went to the Tangled Maze on the way home where Sus and I got eaten by a giant caterpillar! Then we practiced the maze 3 times before finally completing it in under 4 minutes on the fourth try. We got rewarded with lolly snakes for our efforts. :o) Then we went to the mineral spa in the afternoon which was actually just a warm chlorinated pool and spa. Despite the chlorine it was still nice and relaxing to lie in the water for 1.5 hours.

Orienteering race (Christmas 5 Days) 1:51:51 [2] *** 5.9 km (18:57 / km) +165m 16:38 / km
spiked:20/20c

Up early and off to Mt Tarrengower!

This was a rock and boulder course with lots of rock detail. I was quite happy with most of my run. Once again I took it quite slowly and studied my map to match up all of the features with what I was looking at on the ground. My biggest mistake was with one control towards the end when I ran fast thinking I had to hit a creek, missed the creek, and kept running to the next one. It took me a little while to realise what I had done!

Other than that, I felt slightly more confident in the rocks than I did last Easter at Burra and happily the course setters didn't take us too far up the hill.

After the event I went for a 9km walk around Hepburn Springs with one of our accommodation buddies and tasted the local mineral springs. Nice!

Event: XMAS 5 Days

Orienteering race (Christmas 5 Days) 1:45:02 [2] **** 6.0 mi (17:30 / mi)

Day 1 - Sailors Creek.

Drove all day straight to the event (about 7 hours drive). Nice bush for running in but this was my first encounter with goldmining detail on maps. What the?!! Took it quite slowly but still messed up quite a few controls. Still - it was a great learning experience - in fact the whole Christmas 5 day event was a great learning experience. I feel better if I call it that. ;o)

My main aim for this carnival was to finish every course and not dnf - which I managed to do. I achieved my goal!

Note

Tyson's annual Boxing Day BBQ - what a great way to spend this holiday! Lots of food, cricket & yachting on TV and badminton in the back yard. Very relaxing.
