Orienteering 2:12:52 [3] 15.2 km (8:44 / km) +68m 8:33 / km

Ran the NAOC2014 Long course with Alex which I didn't run in the fall in the never ending heavy rain.

I figure about 20 seconds slow per control because of lack of flag (7 minutes total), 5 minutes because of summer foliage and another 6 minutes because of the super sloppy wet conditions. That's 18 minutes because of conditions which would put me at 1:55 in the fall. I then spent 8 minutes trying to figure out what was going on at 2 but I was right on in the first place and I would have moved on right away with flags. 1:47. And that's going at 80-85% not racing so I'm quite happy with that. Unfortunately I never got to the right clearing at 6 so mis-punch!

Performance was good but definitely not great. Really struggled to read the map and orienteering ahead of where I was. The print quality and drafting are fine but with the low light, rain and 1:15 scale it was hard to read. I tried the magnifier early on but with the rain drops on the map and magnifier itself it was useless.
Made a number of mistakes because the area is simply that hard.

Key lesson from today:
The subtle area in the north combined with somewhat scrappy vegetation is the perfect example of where an obvious attackpoint is the best strategy. More and more I've taken to going straight and trusting my orienteering abilities rather than taking the simpler route because it's less risky. This is an area where that's not necessarily the right option because it's so easy to get pulled off and it's so hard to relocate on the go with confidence.

Trail running 8:37 [1] 1.13 km (7:39 / km) +2m 7:35 / km

Went out and picked up the start flag from last fall. Unfortunately none of the other flags were still there ;)
