Event: US Champs

orienteering (model) 23:00 [1] ** 1.53 mi (15:02 / mi)
spiked:8/11c

Took off work so I could get to the US Champs in plenty of time to work my shift at the sprint finish. Did the sprint model, taking the controls in order then from 8 to 5,3,2,fin. Jogged most of it, walked some while checking out specific map features. Expect to have some trouble with the 1:5000 scale. Also hope the real sprint map has better north arrows than the model.

run warm up/down 11:00 [1] 1.0 mi (11:00 / mi)

Warmup before the sprint. Was a bit chilled after sitting in the shade working at the finish so needed a bit of jogging. Mostly back and forth to the bathrooms at the parking and in the parking lot.

orienteering race (sprint) 22:03 [4] *** 2.7 km (8:10 / km) +95m 6:57 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: Integrator06 studs

QOC: US Sprint Champs. Prince William Forest Park. Red. 15:07 start time so knew what the early finishers had done before I started. Mostly a good run except for botching #3. Got a little to high and ran well past it before looking down to the stream. Found the control in the pit but could not find the pit on the map. It was there but at the end of a ditch and my map reading eyesight is not very good in the woods. Ran up the stream and found it but also lost 1:30. Physically tired by 9 and struggled on the road to 10. Did not notice anyone specifically on my course until Greg Balther went by after 14. Thought he was on Blue but he seemed to have the same last controls.

The actual sprint map appears different from the model and as I compare the two now I can see why. The model map has much darker course printing, the control numbers are huge, and the circles are rarely broken to show what they are obscuring. The real map has normal course printing but darker and larger control descriptions. Neither has the word North or an N, just arrowheads on two of the N-S lines. I thought the model map was supposed to be similar to the actual event map.

Square dancing (rounds) 30:00 [1]
shoes: Dockers Gordon

Phase V figures workshop. 8-10pm. This was the 3rd session on the waltz but we had missed the first two. They covered 33 figures of which we knew 1 going in. Still know 1 but at least we have been introduced to the others which may help during later teaches.

run (trail, road) 36:43 [2] 4.5 mi (8:10 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Grid Shadow

Burke Lake 3:30pm. Warm again near 70F. Stomach still bothering me a bit but tried to get in some token speed work before the Champs this weekend. Ran hard for 1/2 mile, then easy for 1/2 mile for the loop. Pretty sad when speed work is 7 min/mile pace. (5:14), 3:42, 4:19, 3:28, 4:15, 3:34, 4:21, 3:40, (4:09)

Square dancing (plus) 20:00 [1]
shoes: Dockers Gordon

At Boomerangs 7:30-9:30.

run (road) 25:03 [1] 2.5 mi (10:01 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Grid Stabil

A wasted day at work doing a run through for a demo on wed. I am not involved in the demo, just needed to be there in case something went wrong. Since it was in our other location, and in the classified lab as well, I had nothing else I could work on.
Thought I might get a nice run in at night after I got home. Got the run started but it was not as nice as I hoped. It was cold and I had long sleeves and a hat for the first time this season. Needed a restroom and had to turn back after 1.25. Stomach started hurting and did not improve even after getting home. Ended up skipping dinner.

orienteering (course setting) 2:03:00 [1] 10.3 km (11:57 / km)
shoes: Integrator03

Course setting at Manassas - Stuarts Hill. Had a potential advanced course on paper and was scouting the control locations. Not very promising. Area is bland with lots of fields and little technical terrain. Something seems to have stolen all the mapped knolls and moved them to areas where they are not mapped. Found lots of unmapped rock piles, fences, and stone walls but never in areas where I wanted to place a control and there was no feature to use. Spent so much time field checking, I only got 2/3 around the course I planned to do. 4 hours 6 minutes, logged as 50%. Distance is an estimate of what was covered.
