Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Orienteering race 39:00 [5] 6.1 km (6:24 / km) +200m 5:30 / km

Billed as a mixed forest / urban race in Valsequillo. In practice a hilly urban blast with a dive down some paths into the Barranco. Felt really hot and hard to keep pushing throughout. Bad mistake going to no 3 when I got the map turned through 90 deg - easy mistake as there were no north lines on the map. Good enough for another win and the overall 3-day victory. Good win for E too with some strong competition on M14.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Humid and dusty - feeling wheezy

Orienteering race 35:00 [5] 5.1 km (6:52 / km) +80m 6:22 / km

Arinaga middle race. Probably the most bizarre terrain I’ve ever orienteered in and certainly one of the least aesthetically pleasing, having more the appearance of wasteland than a coastal nature reserve. That said I really quite enjoyed the race! Got somewhat confused by the start kite location, several hundred metres up the track, then did a banana into no 4, but otherwise clean. Sweating like a beast by the end. Clawed some time back from yesterday with a win on the day.
Don’t think we’ll be rushing back to this part of the island.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Legs feeling much fresher this morning

Orienteering race 1:07:00 [5] 8.1 km (8:16 / km) +300m 6:59 / km

Llanos de la Pez long race. Good in parts but lost too much time at 7&8 and pretty sure I took the wrong route 2-3. Then tried to do the cross-cross loop in the wrong order at the end. 4’ down on the lead time. Fun all the same!

Running 36:00 [2] 4.7 km (7:40 / km) +75m 7:06 / km

Run back to the casa from the event. Found the path this time.

Note
(rest day)

Starting to feel quite tired. Walk from Artenara along the ridge and back for ~1.5h plus a couple of shorter ones later. Another nice wee town with lots of arty installations etc. Then visited some wacky cave houses at Acusa Seca before returning by the scariest roads ever via El Carrizal. Unbelievable topography down in the bottom of the caldera and roads that wiggle up unfeasably steep slopes and along knife edge ridges.... not much rest for J driving!

Running 1:11:00 [3] 8.2 km (8:40 / km) +650m 6:12 / km

With J and E from Cruz de Tejeda up onto the ridge to the NW. Lovely little path along to the Cuevas de Cabillo then up to the high point of Moriscos at 1759m. Back much the same way with a wee detour to the high point above Cruz.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

W-u before O. Took a while to loosen off. Right groin especially.

Orienteering race 21:00 [5] 3.8 km (5:32 / km)

Night sprint in Agüimes. Great fun. Lovely wee town with plenty of alleys etc. Was going really well through until no 11 (1:20 up on J at this point) when I stopped planning ahead and started pushing a bit too hard. Came out of 14 in completely the wrong direction needing to use my compass for the first time to reset the map and relocate. Only realised when I saw the splits that I’d messed up the last control to finish too, as there was an alley hidden under the red line!
Somehow managed to sneak a win all the same.

Orienteering 32:00 [3] 4.4 km (7:16 / km) +100m 6:32 / km

O training at La Calderilla. Drove 1hr over the hill to Vasequillo only to be bussed back more than half way in the same direction before turning up towards the Pico de Nieve. Vast areas of the mountain here were burnt in a huge fire at the end of Sep, including most of the training area. If you could ignore the charcoal it was very pleasant running, although the map was a bit of a cartoon. Quick enough underfoot except for the volcanic rocky bits.

Running 1:00:00 [3] 8.3 km (7:14 / km) +230m 6:21 / km

By this point we were only 8km straight line from our casa and I couldn’t resist running back, even if I did feel massively guilty about J having to get the bus all the way back to Vasequillo only to turn round and drive back again....
Mostly on tarmac back to the Col above the house. Thought there might be a path paralleling the top road but ended up back on it again after a while. From the Col it was only a 15’ descent back down the path we’d explored part way on Sat.
J and E still not back some hours later :-(

Running 1:23:00 [3] 9.5 km (8:44 / km) +650m 6:31 / km

From house up onto the shoulder of Roque Nublo then drop down into the Barranco and along the road to Tejeda. Pepsi in a bar overlooking the valley before heading back along the bottom of the Barranco, then a steep climb back up to the house. Easy pace but had to work a bit coming back up the hill.
Cold hasn’t developed into anything too awful - slight wheeziness but nothing to stop me from running.
Finally managed to get hot water working for a shower once we got back - nice Christmas treat :-)
