Relaxed potter round Aboyne including a lovely run out west along a snowy river bank. Cold crisp night - faaab. Feeling tired but seemingly undamaged from yesterday’s little trot.

Route 52 - a km for every week of the year or something like that. From home by the river bank to Aboyne, cross to S side and along to Glen Tanar, over to Deecastle on SDRd, a few km on the road then river bank to near Ballater, through Pannanich, into village and a stop at the Bothy. Then back along the DW to Tullich, path up the other side to Cambus, over to BoV, round LK, and back to Aboyne along the DW from Dinnet. Sunny day but an icy wind and some slippery bits of track early on. Feeling pretty tired by Ballater, but rest, soup and dry socks helped a lot and picked up well through Cambus and BoV. V tired by Dinnet but it was easy to shuffle back along the DW to Aboyne from there. All in all a grand day out!

Devils Burdens leg 4 for the FV40 team. Strange format with a ‘score’ style course which could be run in any direction. Meant you didn’t really know who you were racing for much of the time, but did give some minor options for a bit of route choice. Went out well behind the Fife lady vets so wasn’t feeling pressured. Didn’t feel like I was running very well after standing around for so long, but my time was no disgrace and I don’t think I lost us any places. Fife and Ochil were enough ahead that we would never have beaten them with our team. Fun day as ever. Some good things about the new format but some down sides too. More teams than ever taking part.

Decided to go along to DR and see whether morning jog had made any difference to feel. No real aspirations to do more than a jog, but actually I did feel a lot better and ended up doing part of the hill session. Jog out Tarland Way to the Coull hill, bit more along the track once I'd jacked the reps, then back again at the end. Almost got mown down by offensive rage farmer in his tractor who didn't appreciate people running on the TW in the dark.

Running hills 24:00 [4] 4.5 km (5:20 / km) +200m 4:22 / km

8x90" reps with jog back recovery between each. Planned to do the first one and then expected to jack, but it wasn't that bad so kept going. Running them at ~75% effort and very solidly at the back! Good turn out tho.

Long Morven loop from Tullich with RB, KH, BS, SP, LA and LC - quite a crowd for a Mon morning! Up the Crannach burn, onto the top from the east, then off the west end and back past Peter's hill, mast and drop to Tullich burn. Really struggling to get the body going, despite an easy weekend - reckon Friday's effort is still in my legs. Great to get out though and good company as always. Lovely sunny day but v chill wind on top once again.

Dess night race. Really pleased with this. Been getting a bit of a mental block about doing races and needed to put myself out there. Ended up in and about the usual crowd. 3rd F behind LP and KH but ahead of SG and ME. Managed to measure my length near the top of the last wee climb by catching my toe on a pebble. Sore knees and a rip in my new tights :-(
Think I'm going to know about this tomorrow.

On the road. Stopped off at Wolftrax for a wee run up the hill fort of Dun na Lambh across the road. Was more or less dry when I set off. Wind strong but bearable. Nice wee run up by the forest road, then short cut back down the MTB track. Pretty wet by the end and certainly didn’t improve heading west to FW!

Planned to go cycling, but looking a bit icy and generally not going to be fun. Headed up the glen in the van and found myself at Braemar (as you do if you keep driving). Walked up Morrone into increasingly wintry conditions. Had thought about a circular loop, but didn't really fancy staying high for much longer, so turned tail and ran back down again. Probably enough for today tbh. Mandatory stop at the BH on the way home. Nice chill w/e.

Ballater Bumps - a new route taking in the lower tops on a big circuit of Ballater. With SR, ME, KH, RB, JS and BS. Turned out to be good planning for a v windy / dreich morning. Gave maps to a few folk to let them practice their nav, with the result that we came off completely the wrong side of Craigendarroch - good start! Went fine after that though and even the terrain sections were mostly not too awful (and short enough). C+C in residence at BH with dodgy photographer hanging about (J knew him) and plod in the box. Got zapped by an anonymous looking electric fence on the edge of the Pann forest. Otherwise largely uneventful! V tired now, but good one to get in the bag.
Have set this as effort 4 as my HR data and general exhaustedness are telling me that this was really quite a big effort!

Home from GoD via the south side of the Dee and Sluie. Actually felt quite good once I got going, through until Potties or so. Love the riverside stretch and used to enjoy doing tempo sessions along there. Could have come straight back by the DW, but decided to push myself that bit extra. Last couple of km felt tough.

The Buck with J from Lumsden side. Feeling really sluggish on the climb. Got crazy windy higher up and pretty bitter trying to run into it - could have done with another layer. Enjoyed the descent rather more with the wind behind us! Did a loop similar to this a few times 12+ years ago, but really couldn’t remember any of it. Nice for a change.

Had a good few days back to back, so stayed back with the Baxter boys while others went off to bike or run the coffin road. Took the boys for a bit of a walk / map reading practice round a MapRun course in the grounds of Applecross house. Nice spot with some lovely wee paths.

Wouldn’t be appropriate to start the next decade without doing something a bit mad, so went for a loony dook in the sea with KH x2. Parking was 750m from the water and there was a howling gale so it was a fairly major sprint effort just to get down there. Quick submersion before legging it back to the van before hypothermia set in.
