10 AM

Running 3:00:00 [2] 16.68 km (10:47 / km) +444m 9:31 / km
ahr:110 max:166

Walk from the Bealach na Ba our to the high point of Sgurr na with everyone (18 plus 4 dogs). Then split in various directions and ended up running back to Hartfield with J via the Carn Dearg ridge. Cloud down at start but gradually cleared with some ace Brocken spectre and atmospheric views before turning into a great day. Pretty cold in the wind walking, but warmed up easily once we got running. Early part of the Carn Dearg section was unbelievably brutal rocky terrain reminiscent of parts of Norway and SR, BS and E thought better and turned back to run down the road. Going improved a bit later on but was still a loooong 16km. Awesome day!

Running 3:45:00 [3] 18.39 km (12:14 / km) +1271m 9:06 / km
ahr:105 max:183

Benn Liath Mhor and Sgorr Ruadh from Achnashellach with J. Looking a bit mixed weather wise and by the time we got onto the ridge the wind was vicious. This was soon followed by hail and snow so there wasn’t much hanging about on the tops. It cleared out again to get some views before the climb onto the second top. From there I thought we’d be back in an hour or so, but the terrain was quite brutal with some fantastic rock slabs and it all took a bit longer than expected. Back with a wee bit of light to spare but wouldn’t have wanted to be out much later. Lovely hills and a good day out.

Running 1:42:00 [3] 15.11 km (6:45 / km) +433m 5:54 / km
ahr:132 max:176

Ros's 9-miler over Coiliochbhar with RB, KH, ME, CR and E. Felt rubbish for the first 20', but once I'd got going was running ok and really enjoyed it. Nice route with a mix of some terrain / rougher bits and fast track.

Running 40:00 [2] 6.13 km (6:32 / km) +86m 6:06 / km

Chilled chatty trot round Crathes with Katja. Hadn't even twigged that it was Sat (and therefore parkrun) until we realised there seemed to be rather a lot of runners about!

Running 1:00:00 [2] 9.0 km (6:40 / km) +138m 6:12 / km

Sweeping for Knockargety night race with KH and KE and picking up a zillion canes on the way back.... there’s well marked and there’s pain in the ass well marked. Really should try and race this again next year as it’s a good terrainy course, but nice just to jog round tonight. Good social and boy done good.

9 AM

Running 1:28:00 [3] 13.34 km (6:36 / km) +208m 6:07 / km
ahr:135 max:164

With Steph, from Dinnet a-c round Loch K, up onto Cnoc Dubh and back by the south side of the loch. Feeling much better running today and was sufficiently warmed up by the time we hit the hill that even it felt ok. Good catch-up natter.

Running 45:00 [3] 5.85 km (7:42 / km) +237m 6:24 / km

Mortlich with J, E, SP, ME, BS, LA and GA. Beautiful morning. Felt awful on the climb and walked the second half. Descent was more fun!

11 AM

Running 2:00:00 [3] 12.46 km (9:38 / km) +600m 7:46 / km
ahr:112 max:161

E was wanting to get up high, but it wasn't looking like the day for it, so we came up with a route less travelled with a traverse of the Meall Alvie ridge from the Glen Fearder end, followed by a direct ascent of Craig Leek. Some fun bits of ridge and rock in amongst a fair bit of grot. By CL it was trying to sleet and the mist was down, so we bailed on the Glen Fearder tops and jogged back by the track. Feeling really sluggish all the way - guess I should be taking a day off, but feel the need to get out and do something, especially given as we have the time.

3 PM

Running 1:00:00 [3] 9.18 km (6:32 / km) +156m 6:01 / km

Down to the river bank and along as far as WHW with E. Caught the last of the light. Tired again after.

Road cycling 2:00:00 [3] 37.1 km (3:14 / km) +542m 3:01 / km

Road bike with E. Lumphanan, towards Torphins, Tarland Rd, Campfield and back by Craiglash. Not too cold, but did lose toes.
Feeling really tired pm.

9 AM

Road cycling 27:09 [2] 6.81 km (3:59 / km) +87m 3:45 / km
ahr:106 max:121

Decided to stop the night on the sofa rather than dice with potholes on the way home again. Good plan as it was icy too this morning, and dodgy enough by daylight. At least I didn't need to worry about breaking bottles if I fell off.
6 PM

Running 1:22:00 [3] 7.53 km (10:54 / km) +645m 7:38 / km
ahr:123 max:190

DR winter solstice night run up Morven. Felt mild at the bottom and was stripping off hat / gloves etc. but as usual it was freezing on top and couldn't get everything back on quick enough. Into the mist by the first plateau bit, so no views tonight. Felt really heavy legged and sluggish heading up, but chilled and went at my own pace. Surprisingly Strava tells me I actually took much the same time as usual. Decent turnout of 20+ and had a wee toast to BP on the top.

Friday Dec 20, 2019 #

9 AM

Running 2:20:00 [3] 21.27 km (6:35 / km) +498m 5:54 / km
ahr:136 max:164

Long tracky run from GT, out past HWH then over the top to S Deeside. Briefly onto the road then tracks back over the top from Deecastle. Trying to keep a steady pace up. Bit of a grey morning.
6 PM

Road cycling 27:00 [2] 6.95 km (3:53 / km) +65m 3:43 / km
ahr:123 max:146

Bike over to KH's with a rucksack full. Wearing normal shoes on my clip-in pedals and trying to avoid potholes in the dark. Not convinced my rear light was very effective, so overly aware of traffic on the road.

Note
(rest day)

Considered Carnferg with DR, but decided to take a day off and hopefully get a longish one in daylight tomorrow.

Orienteering race 55:00 [3] 5.36 km (10:15 / km) +132m 9:08 / km

DNC Carlogie. Nice night again and a fun wee control picky course round the nice bit of the forest. Pretty clean run. Enjoying night O so much more again this season - headtorch investment worth every penny!
9 PM

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Had to skip a couple - cramping in inner hamstring above the right knee

Tuesday Dec 17, 2019 #

6 PM

Running 45:00 [3] 7.4 km (6:05 / km) +12m 6:02 / km
ahr:121 max:146

DR session was meant to be 3 x Rhunabarclay (~1 mile) reps. W-u was too short. Had nothing in the legs or lungs to work the first rep and was wheezing and coughing by the end, so bailed and went for a jog round the Rhunahaven loop instead. Felt a bit heady all day - need to shift this cold properly before trying to do anything too intense.

Mountain biking 1:00:00 [2] 9.66 km (6:12 / km) +173m 5:42 / km
ahr:118 max:135

Headed out on the MTB thinking that the rougher tracks would be ok for ice. They weren't too bad in the woods, but not so good anywhere out in the open. Main road was just about ok, but back roads less so. Turned back from Lumph by the old military road then into the fields. Jumped off a few times and taking the rest very cautiously. Nice to get some fresh air though and caught a brief 2' proper snow shower.

Sunday Dec 15, 2019 #

Running 50:00 [3] 6.7 km (7:28 / km) +100m 6:57 / km

Playing the evil elf in Bellwood for Maroc Christmas special. Competitors had to punch my control in between Santa's and the regular static ones. Jogged a few loops round steadily, then upped the game for certain competitiors by turning around to make them chase me in order to punch. Lots of fun. I think I must be naturally evil. Not a bad wee fartlek session either!
Feeling pretty wiped out pm.

10 AM

Running 2:30:00 [3] 12.13 km (12:22 / km) +930m 8:56 / km
ahr:112 max:188

Planned some nav practice for RB and KH above Braemar. Had set it up in MapRun to trial as a useful tool for MM style training. Didn't get off to a good start when the app couldn't pick up the start point (apparently in someone's garden) but downloaded the new MapRunF app which lets you adjust various settings and was able to increase the punching threshold to 30m - ping! Wasn't sure how far I'd get with my cold lingering, but felt ok heading up the track and we were stopping a fair bit to discuss the nav. Once we were in terrain we slowed pretty much to walking anyhow, so was all good. Feet got completely frozen traipsing through wet snow and there was a cold wind up higher on the more exposed bits. Good fun, nice to get some fresh air with good company and hopefully some useful learning for RB especially. App was very slow to respond, but did manage to get it to register in all the correct spots. Out for almost 3:30 total.

DNC Balmedie. Nice night. Reasonably smooth with the nav - just a bit of time loss on the no 6 bingo hill and slightly scrappy in a couple of other places, but kept pretty good map contact throughout. AWP much appreciated.

Hilly fartlek round Dess woods with J. 8 x reps taking it in turns to pick the next spot. Reps ranged in length from ~1:20 to ~4:30 with relatively short recoveries, max 1:30. Feels like I worked quite hard.

Running warm up/down 18:00 [2] 2.5 km (7:12 / km)

W-u before fartlek and jog back from end

Was about to get dark by the time I got my act together to go biking. Found a small headtorch that could fit under my helmet, and headed via WHW towards Bellwood. By the time I got to the edge of BW I stopped to turn it on, only to find that it was already on, but so useless that I couldn’t even tell. Didn’t fancy bits of my planned circular route in complete dark, so went to go find J in Aboyne and cadge a lift home instead. Pottered round various bits of the village on the pavements and DW to get some more length. Nice to get some fresh air and easy exercise at least.

Shadowing IM at Keppernach. Wheezing again at start, but had taken inhaler and it soon settled down. Still struggling to keep up with IM though, and glad of the chat at each control to get my breath back!

Running 2:35:00 [3] 20.99 km (7:23 / km) +654m 6:23 / km

Wanting to do a long one but still coughing and wheezing and not totally sure whether just asthmatic or an infection. Upped the inhaler doses yesterday and this morning and realised when I set off that this had made a big difference. Headed up the Fungle to the high point above Birse C, then turned towards the Firmounth. Cut off the track a bit earlier than I should have, so ended up cutting through the heather to pick the track up as it headed down into GT. Almost stood on a beautiful white hare near the top - quite surprised to see any down on these hills tbh. The top end of GT was looking even more beautiful than I remember - juniper really taking over the understorey. Met a big bird further down that flew down onto the track to say hello - obviously feeling a bit bored and lonely. Started to flag on the climb back up round Baudy Meg having only brought a few sweeties as I didn’t think I’d get this far. Met CW above the Guard and enjoyed his company back down to the bridge. It was a good distraction from hunger and tired legs. Pleased to be able to do this today as it will mean I can chill with ScotJOS over the weekend.

DNC at Dinnet Muir. Just the best O fun I’ve had since BNC. Love this place and on a clear starry night it’s even more special. Really clean with the nav and all controls popped up just where I expected them. Only time loss was stopping to tie my laces.
Breathing was dreadful wheezing the whole way round.

Cairn t'Sagairt Mor from Ballochbuie with E, then back by the Meall an t'Slugain ridge and Creag nan Leachda. Not quite the blue sky day that we'd been promised, but pretty nice all the same. Chill wind on the tops and v icy underfoot in places. Crossing the icy burn before the main climb was a little disconcerting, but managed to find a spot where it was fully iced over. Steady pace, not breaking any records.
