Walking 4:00:00 [3] 16.8 km (14:17 / km) +1100m 10:46 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Plan was to bag the high point above Tosbotn. Had some vague Norwegian directions from ut.no and a very crude map. Got a few more directions from a local guy at the track end (right, left, right...) and headed off. Nice new (hydro) and old track took us well up into the forest but then we had to get onto the spur somehow past a wall of crags. Eventually went for a bit of an open gap and had an interesting 30’ scrambling through scrub, crags and near vertical slopes before reaching the plateau. It all looked good from here though and we could see s nice peak beyond lots of rock slab slopes. Lovely climb up through it all and eventually reached the main ridge. At this point the view opened out - to reveal another bigger peak at the head of the next valley.... oops. So we bagged peak 1010m (no idea what it was called) before turning back. Saw an elk running across the horizon and stopped for a quick skinny dip in a wee Lochan. Then picked a ‘fruit salad’ of cloudberry, blaeberries, strawberries and raspberries in the way back. Magic mountains and fjords and a great day out. Who cares which top we reached!

Walking 2:30:00 [2] 13.1 km (11:27 / km) +200m 10:38 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Round Bjurälven nature reserve with J and E. 3km into the start of the karst valley then a 7km loop with lots of ups and downs via ladders etc. Ran part way back with E.

8 AM

Running 1:30:00 [3] 12.0 km (7:30 / km) +430m 6:22 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Time to get back to some bigger UTMR training hours. Early with E from Svartsjön camping spot. First up a signed path onto Njakfjäll then decided to live dangerously and try to turn it into a circular route by linking signed fishermen’s paths between the multitudinous tarns. Just about worked but took rather longer than planned. Lovely scrubby edge of forest / moorland terrain but boardwalks were mostly narrow single plank and rotting in places which made for some quite focussed running. All good fun!
3 PM

Running 21:00 [3] 2.1 km (10:00 / km) +150m 7:22 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Turned into a bit of a grey day so we abandoned our planned hill climb and continued on round the Vildmark road. Was keen to do some more running and climb so decided to bag a high point near the top of the road over the moors. Some 14’ to the top and 7 back down. Avoided the worst of the weather. Bleak land above the tree line, especially on a wet day.
4 PM

Running 50:00 [3] 6.1 km (8:12 / km) +150m 7:18 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Ended up the day at the entrance to the Bjurälven nature reserve, so ran in the path to the edge of the limestone valley, then back out the same way. More boardwalk. Wider this time but wet, which was equally challenging.
Decent day’s effort - quite hard to fit round family plans and travel.

Saturday Jul 28, 2018 #

Note

Rest day - heading into the wilds of western Sweden.
Some nice touristing at Torvsjö Kvarnar and falls on the Kultsjöån

OWS 10:00 [2]

Lake swim at Svartsjön, Njakafjäll

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]
shoes: Arctic Talon

Before start

Orienteering race 48:00 [5] 6.3 km (7:37 / km)
shoes: Arctic Talon

O Ringen day 5 Skyttis chasing start. Oh dear! Started steady and soon let my mini pack go ahead as they were clearly running faster. My best chance was to run clean and hope that they missed. All good to 6, although route to 5 wasn’t the best. Longish leg to 7 was fine initially but got confused by the open hill tops as I approached the control circle. Upshot was a parallel error with completely incompetent attempts at relocation and 10+’ binned... game over. Hey ho. Ended up 18th overall which I’d probably have been quite happy with before the start of the week. Great competition which got me quite inspired again - just wish we could generate similar racing back home.

Walking 1:00:00 [2] 4.7 km (12:46 / km) +300m 9:41 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Post race up Skulebergen. Tough wee climb up the face of the hill with lots of ladders and rock slabs. Got a bit wobbly half way up, at which point I realised I hadn’t eaten that much. Luckily there was a cafe at the top and the ice cream / coke solved the problem. Great wee spot and a good way to avoid dwelling on O Ringen disappointments.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]
shoes: Arctic Talon

To start

Orienteering race 46:00 [5] 5.2 km (8:51 / km) +200m 7:25 / km
shoes: Arctic Talon

O Ringen day 4 Hägglunds. V tricky terrain. Handled it reasonably with no big misses but a bit scrappy and hesitant at several controls. 12th on the day and 12th overall going into the chasing start... in the middle of a double decker 30” sandwich.... eek!

Note

Afternoon walk at Skuleskogen national park. Impressive raised beaches, narrow gorge and nice coastal views.

Wednesday Jul 25, 2018 #

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]
shoes: Arctic Talon

To start. Hot.

Orienteering race 36:00 [5]
shoes: Arctic Talon

O Ringen day 3 Backsjö. Not so good today. Lost focus on the way to 3 and overshot badly taking a long time to relocate. Brain overheat I think. Also a smaller error in the fiddly bit.

OWS 5:00 [1]

In the sea again

Tuesday Jul 24, 2018 #

Note

Rest day. Walk from Gullvik up onto O area then back by coast

OWS 5:00 [1]

shoes: Arctic Talon

To start

Orienteering race 44:00 [5] 5.2 km (8:28 / km) +200m 7:06 / km
shoes: Arctic Talon

O Ringen day 2 Domsjö. Different part of same map as yesterday. Rougher underfoot and a bit trickier in places. Went well again. Small error in the circle at 5 (30”) and not sure about route choice on the long leg to 6 but good otherwise. 13th again. Hot again.

OWS 5:00 [1]

Cool off at Gullvik - some waves for the first time.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Arctic Talon

To start

Orienteering race 39:00 [5] 4.8 km (8:07 / km) +150m 7:02 / km
shoes: Arctic Talon

O Ringen day 1 Domsjö. Solid start. Small mistake in the circle at no 1 (max 1’) but otherwise really clean. Gorgeous terrain on the hill tops, similar to training areas but seemed faster underfoot and less rocky. A tad slippier though, after morning thunderstorms. Would have been nice to have another km or two up there before the track transit towards the finish. A few silly fast times but happy to be as close to some of the big names. 13th W50 on the day.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Nice
Also a short wander up behind the campsite

shoes: Arctic Talon

Jog to start and back from finish of training

Orienteering 45:00 [3] 4.3 km (10:28 / km) +180m 8:39 / km
shoes: Arctic Talon

O training at Gullvik. More cracking forest. Getting my eye in ok to terrain and map but not seeing the best running lines yet. Cooler but 99.9% humidity so still dripping with sweat.

OWS 10:00 [1]

Round the bay a little- lovely wee spot and much quieter

O training at. Bergsjön. Another lovely area. Felt more confident in this and was managing to plan / think ahead as well as running a bit more. Still v hot though.

OWS 15:00 [1]

Afternoon in the sea at Gullvik.
Campsite quieter but lots of Oers arriving for training. At least they seem to have finished constructing the car park 30m from our camp spot.

Thursday Jul 19, 2018 #

Running warm up/down 5:00 [1]
shoes: Arctic Talon

Jog up to start of O training

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 5.3 km (11:19 / km) +190m 9:36 / km
shoes: Arctic Talon

O training at Åsberget. Took it slowly to try and figure out as much as possible. Some tricky bits on the rocky slope especially. Hill tops looking completely parched and burnt. 30+ again - too hot to work too hard. Loved it though - orienteering is ace:-)
Got back to find a parking ticket - in a bus stop (thought I’d parked enough away from it) and facing the wrong direction... wtf....welcome to ORingen. The thing is our reg number on the ticket is missing the last letter and I can’t “understand” Swedish. To pay or not to pay....

OWS 10:00 [1]

In the Baltic at Gullvik

Walking 2:30:00 [2] 12.2 km (12:18 / km) +730m 9:28 / km

Ottfjället above Vålådalen with J and E. Nice walk. Set off early so reasonably cool with a good breeze, but visibility rather hazy. Saw mountain grouse with chick and a couple of solitary reindeer. Lovely scrubby moorland on the lower slopes. Getting hot again by the time we got back to the van.

Pre brekker again with J, from campsite at Lit along the path towards Hagfors. Temp just about ok at 07:30. Feeling rubbish and route was pretty uninspiring. Done.

Straight from run into the river.
11 AM

Kayaking 3:00:00 [1] 15.0 km (12:00 / km)

Up the river Hãrkon from Lit to Hagerfors then back down again. Easy enough to start but had to pull the kayaks through some shallow rapids further on. Roasting hot again.

8 AM

Running 1:04:00 [3] 9.7 km (6:36 / km) +220m 5:56 / km

Pre breakfast. Across the river from camping spot (somewhere beyond Sveg - by a great wee rock gorge section of the river) and forest tracks on the other side. With J and E initially then continued a bit further to get it up to the hour. Ok once I got going but needing brekker by the end. Swedish porridge - with cloudberry and blaeberries, yum :-)

OWS 5:00 [1]

Quick dip in the river after run.
4 PM

OWS 15:00 [1]

In the Hårkon river at Lit. Nice. Way too hot otherwise.

O training at Gronklitt by SPs stuga. Lovely area but struggling to move at any speed through the terrain. Just about managed to hold the technique together, although drifted off bearing a couple of times. Got ambushed by cloudberries in the marshes.

OWS 15:00 [1]

First lake swim of the holidays at the end of the O. Lovely.

Friday Jul 13, 2018 #

Running 2:15:00 [3] 11.2 km (12:03 / km) +960m 8:26 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Left J in bed to bag an early morning peak (Tron, 1666m). Lovely forest at start then out onto beautiful open hill with views back towards the Rondane. Felt pretty good and climbed at a steady pace. Last km was a big boulder field again, but getting used to that now. Summit in 75’. Trontoppen itself was spoilt by masts and dirt road but the rest of the route was great. Couldn’t resist a detour on the way back over a subsidiary top but then found myself the wrong side of a deep gorge. Managed to find a place to cross and then back by the outward route. More ptarmigan with chicks doing piteous wailing as a decoy. Fab.

Thursday Jul 12, 2018 #

Walking 5:00:00 [3] 20.2 km (14:51 / km) +1400m 11:02 / km
shoes: Speedcross 4

Glittertind with J. Technically much easier climb than the previous tops, but quite a long way. Legs felt pretty good so put my head down to slog out the climb in good time. Just over 3 h to the top, which was the only slightly ‘interesting ‘ bit, buried under several metres of corniced snow. Didn’t hang around long here as it was looking threatening to the S and W with first clap of thunder just as we left the top. Saw a herd of reindeer on the way up and a ptarmigan with 2 chicks on the way back. Only passed 4 folk heading up but met the masses on the steep section of climb going back (Norwegians don’t seem to do early). Another good day.

Wednesday Jul 11, 2018 #

Walking 4:00:00 [3] 13.1 km (18:19 / km) +1500m 11:39 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Galdhøpiggen with J. Awesome. Felt ok on the climb and made good time (2:30) to the top. Sat around for a while before heading back down against a steady stream of people. Great hill day - tops clear but not too hot. Amazing glaciers and ridges as far as the eye could see. Felt easier going than the Rondane tops.

Tuesday Jul 10, 2018 #

Running 40:00 [3] 5.0 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: Speedcross 4

Short run up the valley from Spiterstulen and back with J.
Also a walk from Lom earlier in the day. Steep climb at the start felt like hard work.
Some refreshing foot dips in the rivers and very short early morning swim - glacier fed water way too cold for more.
+27 C again - couldn’t be much different from yesterday morning.

Monday Jul 9, 2018 #

Walking 4:30:00 [3] 21.0 km (12:51 / km) +750m 10:55 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Woke (after very little sleep) at 4:30am to rain. Managed to drift off again but by 6am J was keen to get up and move. Couldn’t get my lenses in with cold hands and wind, so spent the first 45’ walking blind. J was moving carefully too, with his shoe having fallen apart half way through the previous day. No difficulty deciding the route as it was no day for the mountain tops. Direct line still climbed to 1650m and the answer to just how cold it was, was given away by white stuff. V glad of duvet jacket, hat and gloves. Legs were stuffed too- poor refuelling and lack of sleep had not aided recovery from yesterday. Felt a long way back! Saw dotterel with chick at close quarters plus snow bunting and various other bird life. Epic trip all round!

Sunday Jul 8, 2018 #

Walking 9:00:00 [3] 30.5 km (17:42 / km) +2550m 12:29 / km
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Rondane adventure... attempt at the Rondane 2000s over 2 days. Great day for the hills - clear skies but not too hot. Set out from Spranget with a 6km run into Rondvassbu then headed up onto the first top - Storronden. Lots of boulders all the way and very steep in parts but nothing too challenging. Then managed to find the (rarely used) line between crags to reach the Col below Vinjeronden. A bit scary but reckoned that the worst would be behind us now. Ha ha. Next climb was equally as brutal and only felt more chilled because it was way-marked. From the top of Vinjeronden the descent was quite short but then yet more brutal climb to the top of Rondslottet. Next we had a 1000m descent through continuous boulder field to Langlupdslen. Our planned route now climbed onto the next ridge and after much deliberation we decided to go for the main peak, but there was no way we could face the full ridge. Yet more monster boulder climbing , this time with lots of loose stuff near the top and a similar descent off the back side. After that it was a long trudge on rough path down towards Døralen where we planned to bivvy overnight. Stopped to cook tea but then decided to go on a bit further to get out of the (increasing) wind.
Some 11 hours on our feet with almost no running after the first 6km. Totally brutal but amazing.

10x4'+2' up Morven by the long track. Sweltering at the start and the first few were a beast, but then a bit of cloud came over and a bit of a breeze too. Really felt it shouldn't have taken 10 reps to get to the top, but that's what it was. Tough.

Running 27:00 [3] 3.7 km (7:18 / km)
shoes: x-Talon 212

Back down again. Almost splattered twice catching my big toe - both times when I'd switched off a bit. Guess I was tired. Left hamstring and knee complaining a wee bit. Cloudberry fruiting - ready in a week or so.
