Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Jog up to near the blue start - feeling lethargic

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

Ran round W45L at Balfour. Not v focussed and plenty of room for improvement with the nav, but nice to be out and see what the forest was like for real. Good job by the planning team and turned out even better than I had dared hope.

Sunday Jul 30, 2017 #

8 AM

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]

To start of wake up loop from arena and back from finish

Orienteering 45:00 [3]

Waking controls in Glen Tanar. Legs not used to terrain and felt awkward in the rougher bits. Forest so peaceful.
5 PM

Running 20:00 [2]

Leg loosener round Dess with J to unwind.

Saturday Jul 29, 2017 #

Running 32:00 [3] 3.5 km (9:09 / km) +200m 7:07 / km

Short trot to the top of Craigendarroch

Friday Jul 28, 2017 #

Running 31:00 [3] 4.8 km (6:27 / km) +120m 5:44 / km

Had hoped to fit something in earlier in the day, but managed a loop round the woods and fields in the end. Not feeling v lively but tried to make myself run properly.

Thursday Jul 27, 2017 #

Mountain biking 1:10:00 [2] 11.7 km (5:59 / km) +200m 5:31 / km

With E from Tulloch Ch up the back path to Cambus, below the quarries and on to the top of the forest. Over the shoulder to Loch Davan and back round the E side of Kinord. Not feeling at all confident on the rougher stuff and managed to have 2 wee falls - no real damage though. Have never really enjoyed riding this bike; might need to bite the bullet and trade it in.

OWS 30:00 [2] 0.84 km (35:43 / km)

Across Loch Kinord with J and a few goldeneye. E came part way too before turning back. Flat calm and looking stunning. Decided we were safer running back than trying to swim it - planning on building up to that.

Running 20:00 [3] 3.1 km (6:27 / km) +35m 6:06 / km

Back from the far side of Loch Kinord. Hadn't really planned on a full triathlon and getting a bit wobbly.

Wednesday Jul 26, 2017 #

Running 30:00 [3] 4.6 km (6:31 / km) +30m 6:19 / km

At Scolty. West from cp to low point of the tracks. Full climb to top by the NW path. Descent N to big track then back to the top by the same route. Off the top by MTB tracks to the SE and back to the cp. Not feeling 100% early on, but definitely got better as the run went on.

Running hills 26:00 [4] 3.0 km (8:40 / km) +300m 5:47 / km

2 x Scolty climbs. 1st all the way up and 2nd from the N gate. Pleased to run all the way on both and last section was actually quicker 2nd time round.

Tuesday Jul 25, 2017 #

Road cycling 58:00 [3] 19.1 km (3:02 / km) +300m 2:49 / km

DW to P'murchie Rd, Tar Rd, Ch Brae to Lumph and home by DAP.
Lovin' it.

Monday Jul 24, 2017 #

Running 1:00:00 [3] 8.5 km (7:04 / km) +240m 6:11 / km

Lap of Balnagowan whilst E training. Made it up as I went, but feeling better than anticipated so a decent run in the end. 90% track (mostly quite rough), 10% terrain.

Stretching 5:00 [1]

Decent post-run stretch while waiting for J+E

Sunday Jul 23, 2017 #

Running 1:00:00 [3] 8.6 km (6:59 / km) +300m 5:56 / km

Got dropped at track end in lower Glen Dye. Ran out to edge of forest then over the shoulder round the edge of the deer fence before dropping to the track above AA box. Feeling much livelier again today and managed to work the hills ok. 2 x 1.5' hill reps at the end while waiting for J and E. Nice.

OWS 12:00 [3] 0.25 km (48:00 / km)

Aboyne Loch with J.

Saturday Jul 22, 2017 #

Note

Lugging stiles etc. up into the forest.
Then a pleasant wander with parentals from Linn of Dee

Running 30:00 [2] 4.4 km (6:49 / km) +60m 6:23 / km

Late afternoon with J and E. Down DW towards Kinker then the river bank. Paying for yesterday's effort on Cnoc Dubh.

Friday Jul 21, 2017 #

Running 1:10:00 [4] 11.0 km (6:22 / km) +240m 5:44 / km

A/c loop of Loch Kinord from the A93 lay-by to BoV cp then up Cnoc Dubh and back round the end of the loch. With J. Hamstrings a bit tight from yesterday, but feeling ok. Start of climb from BoV wasn't great but tried to keep the effort up and felt a lot better on the 2nd half up from Cambus to the top of CD. Equalled ECs Strava QoM for this bit so quite happy with that.

OWS 20:00 [3] 0.45 km (44:27 / km)

In Loch Kinord for the first time - been missing out as it was lovely. Tired after though and a bit of a hike back up to the road.

Thursday Jul 20, 2017 #

Running warm up/down 24:00 [2] 3.8 km (6:19 / km) +60m 5:51 / km

Running intervals 30:00 [5] 4.6 km (6:31 / km) +30m 6:19 / km

5x4'+2' on the railway. A bit squelchy underfoot but almost stopped raining. Legs ok on the flat.

Wednesday Jul 19, 2017 #

Note
(rest day)

Time for some proper rest. Legs felt quite tired after yesterday.

Tuesday Jul 18, 2017 #

Running 1:20:00 [3] 10.0 km (8:00 / km) +425m 6:36 / km

With J from SD Rd at Inchmarnoch up the Pannanich ridge to summit. Through terrain to Black Moss and the rocking stane, then back by the track and some nice new bits of mtb path through the woods. Gorgeous afternoon. Didn't enjoy the start of the climb (no w-u) but made myself work all the way to the top. Lovely path here now from the bikers and v dry at the mo. Merlin ? by the rocking stane. Nice route.

OWS 18:00 [3] 0.4 km (45:00 / km)

In the Dee at Cambus. No wetsuit required :-)

Monday Jul 17, 2017 #

Road cycling 1:16:00 [3] 23.5 km (3:14 / km) +350m 3:01 / km

Cycle from home to Tillypronie to meet J for a swim at Pronie Loch. Lovely afternoon but a headwind all the way and a grind up the hill at the end.

OWS 17:00 [3] 0.4 km (42:30 / km)

In Pronie Loch. Nice but a bit choppy / in the eyes on the way back. Goggles would help.

Sunday Jul 16, 2017 #

Mountain biking 2:15:00 [2] 39.0 km (3:28 / km) +250m 3:21 / km

With J and E. Nice recovery out the DW to Cambus for ice-cream then home the same way. Not quite as much of a potter as I had envisaged.

Saturday Jul 15, 2017 #

Running 30:00 [2] 4.0 km (7:30 / km) +130m 6:27 / km

Recovery trot round Dess woods with J and E. Let E choose the route; he took us straight up the ski slope and on to the top of the ride... think it was pay back time for yesterday :-(
Feeling shafted.

Friday Jul 14, 2017 #

8 AM

Running 16:00 [3] 2.6 km (6:09 / km) +55m 5:34 / km

Short one this morning. Didn't feel too bad.
11 AM

Running 1:10:00 [2] 7.5 km (9:20 / km) +250m 8:00 / km

The Lochinver Lochathlon....
As an insanely daft climax to our holiday J and I decided to see how many lochs we could visit and swim in a run off the road between Lochinver and Clachtoll. It was impossible to plan as we had no idea how cold we would get, what the terrain was like, what the lochs would be like etc. E was cynical from the outset but we thought we had him roped in as land support and to carry a bit of spare kit / map / food.
Climbed the deer fence 100m from the car to enter the world of regenerating, community owned Assynt. It's fantastic, it's full of biodiversity, it's full of bog and heather and rocks and bog myrtle and bracken... but you really don't want to try and run through it. Ah well at least we didn't need to worry about wet feet.
Loch no 1. Loch a Phollain - a bit shallow and weedy. Go further round and do a wee crossing with E bringing bag round on land
On to loch no 2 and it can't get worse, or can it? Second full body disappearance into a hole in the ground and E's not getting any happier either. Starting to realise that the challenge of the day is not about whether we can stay warm, but whether we can negotiate the terrain.
Loch no 2. Loch a Phollain Drisich - send E round on the high ground to the re-entrant towards the next loch and cross to the boulders with J, except we still have the map. Time to test the waterproof case out!
On to loch no 3 and now we're scrambling through rocky heather and E has disappeared. Totally. Lots of shouting, climb high ground re-tracing steps until we finally spot him. Spare kit thrown at us and he disappears in a huff (and I really can't say I blame him for once!).
Loch no 3. Lochan Caorainn - a bit weedy but ok for a short out and back.
On to loch no. 4 and as we get onto higher ground the going improves, although it's still an awful lot of up and down.
Loch no. 4 Loch Glac na Goibhre - all good. Out and back to some rocks.
Almost running a few sections now and lochs 5 and 6 are right next to each other.
Loch no. 5 Loch Meall a Chuna Beag - a bit shallow and weedy
Loch no. 6 Loch Meall a Chuna - much nicer so do a wider crossing to a big rock and back
Then a short jog across to loch no 7 which isn't even shown on the Strava map...
Loch no. 7 Lochan Mhudbhalobh - for a good reason as it's not much more than a bog. Bog snorkelling springs to mind as we squelch across and back a short muddy section
Loch no. 8 Lochan Uhnaimed - gorgeous deep water off craggy sides. Across to a rowan on the far side and back
Loch no. 9 Lochan Meall a Chuna Beager - find a deeper bit after wading round the edge for a way
Loch no. 10 Lochan Fhinalich - quite nice once we got away from the edge.
Definitely starting to feel a bit on edge with the wind blowing, so made the effort to keep up a run on the squelch back to Pollan cottage and thence by track to the car.

Crazy plan, but it was a bit of fun. Thinking of commercialising the concept into an event, but we might need to do a bit more careful planning before it will take off - not sure how many orienteers would appreciate some of that terrain, never mind the general running / outdoor community!

OWS 30:00 [3]

10 x Lochinver lochs

Thursday Jul 13, 2017 #

Running 2:10:00 [3] 13.5 km (9:38 / km) +670m 7:43 / km

Skipped the pre breakfast run in favour of something a bit longer today. Dropped by J at Inchnadamph to run by the path over the shoulder of Glas Bheinn past the Lochan a Choire Ghuirm to descend to the Kylesku road just north of the Quinag cp. J ran this during the DR big relay and recommended it. It was indeed a lovely route and legs didn't feel too bad on the steady climb. Since I'm never going to catch a fish in the Loch of the Green Corrie I decided in the spirit of the holiday that I should swim in it instead. Job duly done and selfie evidence obtained. From there it was cross-country back to the path and a rough descent towards Loch na Gainmhich. Last 1.5km back along the road to meet J and E at Quinag cp. Great!

OWS 1:00 [3]

In the Loch of the Green Corrie of Norman McCaig / Andrew Greig fame.

OWS 7:00 [3] 0.2 km (35:00 / km)

In Maiden Loch. A bit wet and cold by the time we got to our proper swim of the day, so kept it fairly short.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Wednesday Jul 12, 2017 #

Running 23:00 [3] 4.0 km (5:45 / km) +100m 5:07 / km

Pre breakfast over to Badnaban road end again. Tried to run it harder and was a fair bit quicker, but it didn't feel much better.

Kayaking 1:00:00 [1]

Sea kayaking from Old Dornie round the Summer Isles. In a double with J and didn't seem to need to put much effort in to find ourselves leaving others behind, so a nice easy morning. Gorgeous day and flat calm sea. Out for a couple of hours.

OWS 16:00 [3] 0.4 km (40:00 / km)

In Loch Druim Suardalain. Suilven and Canisp as the backdrop today. Shallower and felt quite warm - could have stayed in longer.

Tuesday Jul 11, 2017 #

Note

Walk back out from bivvy. First midgey encounter of the hols!

Walking 1:00:00 [2] 6.2 km (9:41 / km) +700m 6:11 / km

Walk up Cul Beag by the path from Linneraineach. Somewhat unorthodox and interesting descent back to the road... Out for 2:50, just over 2h moving.

OWS 8:00 [3] 0.2 km (40:00 / km)

In Loch Assynt. Cooold, even with good strong sun overhead..

Monday Jul 10, 2017 #

Running 20:00 [3] 2.8 km (7:09 / km) +50m 6:33 / km

Back to normal this morning... out and back on track behind the house then down to bay and river.

OWS 3:00 [2]

In the sea at Achmelvich. Cold.

Running 53:00 [3] 7.7 km (6:53 / km) +120m 6:23 / km

From Achmelvich beach to the tea room at the far end of Lochinver. Gorgeous track past Loch Dubh and over the top to Baddidarach. Not feeling great running but beautiful day and couldn't not enjoy it.

OWS 16:00 [3] 0.4 km (40:00 / km)

In Loch Bad na Muirichinn. Short walk through a rocky cut to get to the loch, tucked away in a stunning setting with Suilven as a backdrop. Felt quite warm, probably as there was some heat in the sun today. Great.

Note

Short walk in to bivvy on a hilltop overlooking the sea, above Poll Loisgan

Sunday Jul 9, 2017 #

Running 24:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:00 / km) +100m 5:20 / km

And on the 8th day... Bizarrely felt good. Don't suppose it will continue but certainly made it more enjoyable this morning. Over to Badnaban and back.

Walking 2:00:00 [2] 18.3 km (6:33 / km) +1200m 4:56 / km

Conival and Ben More Assynt from Inchnadamph. Straight out and back the same way. Dry with cloud on the tops but almost cleared out by the time we reached the top of Ben More. Out for 5:15, 4:45 moving.

OWS 15:00 [3] 0.35 km (42:51 / km)

Loch Buine Moire. Across to the far side and back - was a bit further than it looked. Stunning setting with Cul Mor, Cul Beag and Stac Pollaidh on the horizon.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Saturday Jul 8, 2017 #

Running 25:00 [3] 3.7 km (6:45 / km) +80m 6:06 / km

From cp at Inverkirkaig out and back along start of Suilven path. Legs feeling better but body still not happy at this time of day.

OWS 7:00 [3] 0.17 km (40:00 / km)

In Loch Drumbeg. Windy and choppy and a bit rainy too. Decided not to be too ambitious.

Note

Walk round the peat road loop at Drumbeg and later at Loch Ardbhair. Skua getting mobbed, stags with amazing antlers, some flowers and butterfly.

Friday Jul 7, 2017 #

8 AM

Running 25:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:15 / km) +50m 5:53 / km

Inverkirkaig. Feeling pretty grim. Body not apparently adapting to these morning runs yet.
11 AM

Running 1:20:00 [3] 10.5 km (7:37 / km) +225m 6:53 / km

With J from Lochinver out along the River Inver then over the hill to Glencanisp and back along the road. Really nice route. Felt stiff and awkward to start but not too bad once I'd got warmed up and managed a bit of a push on the climbs.
4 PM

OWS 13:00 [3] 0.35 km (37:09 / km)

In Loch Call nan Uidhean. Nice.
9 PM

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Double stretching today - first session after lunch. Helping.

Thursday Jul 6, 2017 #

Running 25:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:15 / km) +100m 5:33 / km

Left up the road and over to Badnaban bay. Felt a bit better than yesterday and just about warmed up by the time we got back. Tried not to shuffle quite so much.

OWS 9:00 [3] 0.25 km (36:00 / km)

In Loch Unapool. Chillier day and raining at the end, but still felt good.

Note

Easy day. Wanderings along the coast at Scourie. Found some great rock gardens and divers in the bay.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Stiff - much needed

Wednesday Jul 5, 2017 #

Running 20:00 [2] 2.8 km (7:09 / km) +40m 6:40 / km

Felt really tired this morning and this was a right shuffle. Went out along the rough river bank trod and back on the road.

Walking 1:30:00 [2] 12.2 km (7:23 / km) +690m 5:45 / km

Cul Mor. Another nice day so had to make the most of it. Easy walk on mostly good / dry path starting from Knockan Crag and following the main path up onto the NE ridge. Then round onto Crag nan Calman and off the SE spur. Found a wee lochan whilst contouring round to rejoin the ascent route and given our holiday challenge it was too tempting not to stop for a quick skinny dip. E was well embarrassed at the suggestion and continued on his own whilst J and I tested it out. Then jog / walk back, catching E again when we rejoined the ascent path. Out for 3:15 total.
Didn't exactly feel great on the climb, but wasn't as bad as expected.

OWS 2:30 [2]

Unnamed lochan below Creag nan Calman. Turned out to be a bit shallow and weedy, but managed to more then meet the HQ swim criterion with about 2 x 20 strokes.

OWS 18:00 [3] 0.5 km (36:00 / km)

In Lochan an Ais below Knockan crag. Across to the middle "neck" and back. Felt like a long way and was a bit choppy heading out, but lovely otherwise. Shared the water with 3 divers. Needed soup at Elphin to warm up again after though.

Tuesday Jul 4, 2017 #

Running 20:00 [3] 2.9 km (6:54 / km) +60m 6:15 / km

Just a short jog this morning - N up the road for a change and onto a wee knoll to keep E happy

Walking 2:30:00 [2] 24.0 km (6:15 / km) +1000m 5:10 / km

Suilven from Inverkirkaig. Great day. Long long plod in and out but worth it for such a special peak. Did both summits - W one easy enough, but a tricky step near the top of the E top. Back in time for the cafe and a bit of jogging on the track thrown in. Out for 6:45 total with 5:45 moving time and we weren't hanging about.

OWS 6:00 [3] 0.2 km (30:00 / km)

Just a short swim today in one of the pools on the Kirkaig. Gps watch registered 7m! It was a bit more than that, but admittedly not much as I wasn't making much progress when trying to swim upstream. Didn't feel too cold.

Monday Jul 3, 2017 #

Running 33:00 [3] 5.0 km (6:36 / km) +100m 6:00 / km

Bit further out the path this morning to make it up to 5km.

OWS 17:00 [3] 0.5 km (34:00 / km)

In Loch a Choin south of Inverkirkaig. 200m away from the road and completely hidden. Lovely wee loch with deep water. Challenged ourselves to reach a distant island. Loved it.

Note

Walks round Culag Woods and Little Assynt.

Sunday Jul 2, 2017 #

Running 24:00 [3] 3.8 km (6:19 / km) +60m 5:51 / km

Pre-breakfast trot along the bay and riverside at Inverkirkaig. Good start to the hols.

OWS 6:00 [3] 0.2 km (30:00 / km)

In Loch Culag. Crossed the neck of the Loch and made it back before getting hypothermia. Fun! And good for the legs hopefully.

Note

Pleasant walk out to the Old Man of Stoer

Saturday Jul 1, 2017 #

Running 1:30:00 [3] 14.0 km (6:26 / km) +530m 5:24 / km

Pressendye with KH. Straight to the top then west to the next top down to Easter Davoch and back by the road to Tarland. Gorgeous morning and good chat. Legs didn't feel too awful on the climb.
