Running 40:00 [2] 4.0 km (10:00 / km) +150m 8:25 / km

Checking out courses for WOUDS 2 at Strathdon. Slow tired plod. Struggling in the (perfectly ok) terrain.

Hill Race race 5:35:00 [5] 28.0 km (11:58 / km) +2370m 8:24 / km

Jura fell race. Hadn't done much homework ahead of this, so quite blissfully unaware of what was in store. It was tough. Very. The Paps of Jura are not very big but there appears to be no easy way either up or down them. Set off really steady which was probably the best plan, but did result in a lot of queuing at times on steeper rougher bits of the first hills. Then there was the decision whether to use lots of energy trying to pass on the outside, or just chill. Ended up doing a bit of a mix. Found myself catching people heading up the 4th top and 1st pap who I thought I should be ahead of (e.g. WD), but was also with HW and KH so position can't have been too wrong. Scree descent off the first pap was grim, but outdone by the descent off the 3rd which was pure scary, especially with wet rock. The climbs were monstrously steep too, but at least I could gain a few places on them.
Hit the last top with KH and with HW not far behind, and from there to the finish was the only time I can remotely say I was trying to race. KH pipped me, but that was very fair as she had stopped to help pull me out a bog earlier, when I got stuck knee deep and cramping. Relieved to be ahead of WD by the end, although she really is a legend.
Not sure how much I enjoyed this one, but great to have ticked it off the list and the weekend experience was brilliant.

Road cycling 50:00 [2] 13.5 km (3:42 / km) +175m 3:29 / km

Joined the pilgrimage from Jura Feolin ferry terminal round to Craighouse. Taking it as easy as possible whilst laden down with panniers.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] 8.0 km (11:15 / km) +150m 10:17 / km

Putting out controls at Morrone. Forgotten how long this takes for a proper event with stakes etc. and didn't allow enough time. Nice night and pleased to use up almost all of the blue maps, but a bit disappointed that only one of my Tues afternoon boys turned up with family.

Running 20:00 [2] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)

Collecting in a few controls. Thanks to AW and J for getting the rest in, and confirming that no 2 on the blue was correct!

Tuesday May 23, 2017 #

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2] 3.4 km (8:49 / km)

Jog through Morrone birkwood as a w-u then up to the start of the hill on the Games race.

Running hills 20:00 [4] 1.6 km (12:30 / km) +220m 7:24 / km

10x1'+1'. Feeling quite sluggish and never got completely going. Trying to remind the body what hills feel like.

Running 30:00 [2] 3.0 km (10:00 / km) +100m 8:34 / km

Hanging and collecting controls for Braemar ASC. Walked much of it while hanging but perked up a bit for collecting. Boys doing good!

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)

Pre relay. Up for this!

Orienteering race 36:00 [5] 5.6 km (6:26 / km)

Scottish relays 11+ handicap with JD and JM. Big race of the day was v Maroc youngsters - JW, EC and MG. JD came back well up and ahead of JW so all to play for... Really pleased with how I handled the race. V few places where I could have saved any time and fighting hard all the way. Died heading up the hill into the final loop. Handed over to J 5' clear of MG, but the last weeks' miles in his legs were just too much. Couldn't have done any more as a team on the day and still v happy with the outcome, even if RR did pip us in the adults competition.
Such fun to race a competitive relay. Maybe next year we'll go for a family handicap team.

Saturday May 20, 2017 #

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 3.5 km (7:09 / km)

To the start at SC. Rain came on just as we got there and got really cold.

Orienteering race 52:00 [5] 7.7 km (6:45 / km) +60m 6:30 / km

SC W45L at Gullane. Plan was to cruise but was a bit over caffeine-fuelled and raced off at the start. Fine to 1 but then all over the place heading to 2 (compass???). Lost 1'+ to E there. After that calmed down a bit but still ran hard. Couple of poor route decisions (path vs straight) late on, but generally happy with the race. Legs felt great.
1st place 10+' clear of 2nd.

Running 20:00 [3] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)

Stopped to chat at the finish until I realised I was v cold. Ran back faster than I might otherwise.

Running 35:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting at Cults part III.

Thursday May 18, 2017 #

8 AM

Running 35:00 [2]

Hanging controls in Bellwood for ASC. Appreciative of E's help - fair trade for a lift to school ;-)
12 PM

Running 25:00 [2]

Hanging controls in Cults woods II. Getting familiar, but much more enjoyable on a sunny morning.
3 PM

Running 35:00 [2]

Collecting controls in Cults woods. Shame we can't just leave them out overnight :-(
6 PM

Running 35:00 [2]

And finally... controls back in again at Bellwood. By some miracle they all survived the day. Remind me not to ask E to make sure they're securely attached though...
Takeaway and vino collapso earned. Beats sitting at a desk all day though.

Wednesday May 17, 2017 #

Running warm up/down 22:00 [2]

Jog down to the r/w and back

Running intervals 18:00 [5]

6x2'+1' on the r/w. Legs feeling pretty good, but head struggling a bit. Think this was good for it.

Running 15:00 [2]

Jog over to DAP with E for forest sprint. Couldn't get myself up for a thrash round, but nice to socialise! E made me walk all the way up the hill coming back... maybe he does work quite hard :-)

Tuesday May 16, 2017 #

Orienteering 1:15:00 [3]

Hanging controls for ASC in Morrone and also checking out terrain for WOUDS 1. Then collecting after. Saved a lot of faff thanks to SPs help today. Plenty of cuckoos in the woods. Fun!
Felt really washed out first thing, but after a chilled morning catching up on lots of stuff I felt quite bright again and legs were much improved today.

Monday May 15, 2017 #

Running 45:00 [2]

Hanging and collecting controls at Cults. Long day and a bit dreich.

Sunday May 14, 2017 #

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

Before the SOL at Glen Nant. Only really got going when I realised I'd forgotten my sweeties and had to leg it back to assembly from the start. Not sure why I rushed as there was meant to be a 20' gap behind me.

Orienteering race 1:36:00 [3]

Glen Nant SOL brown course. A bit too tired to do this area justice. Bad start trying to go through the terrain and down some scary slopes, rather than taking the path option. Then managed to do a 180 out of no 5. Nav got better after that and the terrain got a bit easier for a while too, but my heart wasn't really in it. Lovely spot though.
Good leg icer with E in Loch Etive after.

Saturday May 13, 2017 #

Running 30:00 [3]

Hoping to bag a munro or two but the weather gods weren't on our side again. Stopped off above Comrie to do a hill session with my wee training buddy instead. 10' jog out to start, then back down the hill again at the end.

Running hills 28:00 [5]

4x5'+2' hills. Steady climb up a good track. E did 1s at the same time.

Note

Potter down Loch Awe later in the car, then a lovely walk round Crinan woods.

Note
(rest day)

Decided a day off would be prudent if I'm to make the most of the w/e

Thursday May 11, 2017 #

11 AM

Running 1:15:00 [3] 9.6 km (7:49 / km) +380m 6:31 / km

So the 20' blast last night tipped me over the edge and now the last few days have really caught up with me.
Up in Strathdon, so headed out onto the hills from Glen Nochty with J. Aim was to do a couple of tops with steep climbs up them. Made it to the top of Moss Hill and descended steeply to the SW towards the second hill, but the lure of the track back down the valley was too much for me. Grovelling the last few km.
4 PM

Running 25:00 [2]

Back out again to hang and collect for ASC in Bellwood. Actually felt much bouncier by the time I was getting the controls in.

Wednesday May 10, 2017 #

9 AM

Running 35:00 [3]

Hanging controls for schools festival at Dalliefour. Then out to search for the last pair and pick up a few controls at the end. Another successful day. Surprised and well impressed at how many launched themselves straight up the steep hillslope from the start when I'd expected them all to go round the flat bit at the bottom! First cuckoo on Deeside.
6 PM

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Orienteering race 22:00 [5]

Foggieton forest sprint. Ran as hard as I could. Just one small time loss not seeing no 13 behind the green, but well-gubbed by the boy. Legs still feeling pretty good considering the last few days.

Tuesday May 9, 2017 #

10 AM

Running 2:05:00 [3] 11.6 km (10:47 / km) +750m 8:09 / km

From Auchcallater cp straight up Creag nan Leachda then round the ridge to Creag na Dearcaige, down to Loch Phadruig, up Meall an t-Slugain and all the way down to Glen Callater past Loch Phadruig. Glorious day and just lovely to be out in the hills. Legs feeling weirdly good, although hamstrings a bit tight by the end. Good soak in the Callater Burn at the end.
4 PM

Running 40:00 [3]

Took my time wandering round Morrone birkwood hanging controls for ASC.

Got more running than I needed at the end after two of the kids managed to go straight past a control on a fence corner and disappear into the depths of the birkwood. Ran out backwards on the course, only to spot them in the far distance on the path to the north. Circled back to rest of group to head them back to duck pond, then back out the north path to round up the strays. Then still had to get most of them back across the village, but we were so late that most of the parents had come looking for them. Then back from the school to pick up the remaining controls (had at least retrieved most whilst searching for the kids).

Think I could do with an assistant for the next couple of weeks - you busy Jon???

Orienteering 55:00 [3] 7.5 km (7:20 / km) +140m 6:42 / km

From Boddomend up Mortlich via Aboyne Loch, reps on the steep bit to the top, then back by the (v dry) bog / Little Hill route. Legs felt fine once I got warmed up.

Running hills 30:00 [5] 2.0 km (15:00 / km) +400m 7:30 / km

4 x reps from the gate to the top of Mortlich. Managed to run the first 3, but had to race-walk most of the last one. Approx climb times of 6:40, 6:35, 6:35, 7:20
Pleased with that. Planning on hitting the hills as much as pos this week.

6 AM

Running 1:30:00 [3] 10.6 km (8:29 / km) +250m 7:36 / km

Woke up early in the tent and didn't expect to get back to sleep, so decided I might as well make the most of spending the night on the edge of Bethecar Moor. Headed out with the 1:50,000 OS and tried to follow some paths, but gave up after a while and just picked a line through the fells. Cuckoos abounding, mist on the distant hills and a lovely reflection of the Old Man in Coniston Water. Not moving very fast and lots of photo stops, but just nice to be out.
11 AM

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Orienteering race 16:00 [5] 2.1 km (7:37 / km) +80m 6:24 / km

Short TD3 leg in a winning AdHoc team with JD and KC. Just fine for me today!

Saturday May 6, 2017 #

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 3.0 km (8:20 / km)

Orienteering race 1:02:00 [5] 7.5 km (8:16 / km) +210m 7:15 / km

British Champs individual, High Dam. 2nd W45, 1:30 down on KB-J
Didn't feel at all well prepared, having had a busy week and no time for O tech training or map geeking. Also unconfident going into the LD terrain for the first time in a while. Took a couple of legs to get into the map but then settled down well. Overall really happy to achieve a smooth race and feel like I'd pushed as hard as I could. Losing it a little over the last few legs with some small mistakes, but KB-J was running faster and deserved the win.

Friday May 5, 2017 #

Note
(rest day)

Logie C taster session this morning - good to make it through this week!

Thursday May 4, 2017 #

9 AM

Running 40:00 [3] 6.0 km (6:40 / km)

Control hanging at Dess for Academy festival. Really pleasant morning run once I'd got warmed up.
Another crackin' day to have the kids running round the woods.
Thanks to BP and RC for getting most of them back in.
4 PM

Running 30:00 [2] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)

Hanging and collecting in Castle Woods for ASC. Delayed mid hanging by bumping into DT.
Thanks to CR for helping collect.

Wednesday May 3, 2017 #

9 AM

Running 25:00 [2] 3.0 km (8:20 / km)

Hanging and collecting controls in Learney woods for Torphins P6s. Small area but worked well for a beginners score. Gorgeous morning.
4 PM

Running warm up/down 28:00 [2] 4.8 km (5:50 / km)

Jog out from middle of Aboyne on DW to road crossing and back after intervals.

Running intervals 20:00 [5] 2.5 km (8:00 / km)

Didn't fancy Tilq in the evening - seeing too many controls already this week - but felt in need of something a bit faster. 10x1'+1' along the DW to gliding strip and back again. Tired by the end.

Tuesday May 2, 2017 #

Running 45:00 [2] 5.0 km (9:00 / km)

Confirmation at midday that we were quorate for ASC in Braemar. 8 boys - maybe need to find a female equivalent of Go Hard or Go Home to inspire my next group :-)
Hang controls near duck pond, walk across village to get kids, back with kids, back to school after session, back to duck pond, then collect controls. Hoping I can make that a bit neater for future sessions.
Nice bunch of kids and lovely afternoon.

Monday May 1, 2017 #

Mountain biking 58:00 [3] 8.6 km (6:45 / km) +300m 5:45 / km

With E up the big Birse track, over to Glencat, along the road, then back over the hill finishing with some nice bits of single-track descent for E. Legs feeling v tired on the climbs. Had planned to do something longer, but this was enough for me today.
