Orienteering 2:29:00 [3]

PT part 3. Balnacara Mighty course. Set off with a MM mentality for this one. Spotted the track option to 4 which saved a lot of energy as well as catching back a few folk. Mostly navigating quite happily and getting a decent line until 2h or so. Then started falling over rather a lot and made some silly mistakes. Just happy to get round though. Energy chews and drink were a saviour.
Dead proud of E getting round the medium thistle both days as well as the Plock B. Great effort for the w/e from Tess - must have taken some serious amount of time to plan.

Orienteering 58:00 [3]

PT part 1 Balnacara French middle. Big course. So heavy going, not much danger of actually running. Not really in the zone at the start but once I got going I enjoyed it and plodded round steadily.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Up to the start.
6 PM

Running 53:00 [3]

PT part 2. Plock A course. Foolishly set off in trail shoes which were woefully inadequate for the terrain. Got horribly stuck in the gorse at 4 and spent several minutes scrabbling around on hands and knees wondering how I would escape. Largely uneventful otherwise and a good fun event. Not exactly racing.

Running 53:00 [3]

Guding for RTH (Chris). Glen Tanar osprey circuit - up the diagonal through the forest onto the high track above the osprey nest. Stopped to point out where the nest was (a new one, further down than previously?) and on cue a bird lifted off and flew across the hillside :-) Back down the big eastern track and along the river bank. Not impressed at J's efforts to tire Chris out. Felt awful heading up the first hill, but much better once I'd got properly warmed up.

To Embra and back

Running 1:12:00 [3]

Kerloch from Knockburn with J, out and back by the big track. Mind over matter at the start, but felt a bit better once I'd got warmed up. Nice day.

Running 1:32:00 [4]

Guiding for RTH (Chris from Kent). Dinnet Muir loop taking in Cnoc Dubh and a wee detour to the Vat. Set off at a fairly brisk pace, but as soon as we hit the hills I was getting dropped. Consequently ended up as quite a tough run for me (which is what I need more of). Hamstrings really tight for the last 15'. Stayed dry and bright.

Heavyish week coming up

Road cycling 2:05:00 [3] 33.0 km (3:47 / km) +800m 3:23 / km

Cairn o' Mount from Feughside, down to Clatterin Brig for tea and malteser slice, then back the same way. First ever ascent of the Cairn, due to lack of a suitable bike. Did this on the MTB with road slicks fitted. It was slow and heavy, but good training I guess. Feeling tired before I started, so pleased with the effort. Managed to beat the rain.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Saturday Jul 23, 2016 #

Running 46:00 [3]

From Queen's Loch w-u along the road to gamie's track and up past the kennels to start of main climb. Reps up the hill then return by the Fungle. Question mark caper at the top of Birsemore and osprey on the loch. Managed to almost pass the blaeberries by, but chanterelle curtailed the run. Feeling a bit sluggish, but reps were ok after the long w-u.

Running hills 24:00 [5]

12 x 1'+ 1' up the main climb. Jog back part way between.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Running 27:00 [3]

Token pre breakfast jog with J from Castagnols. Bit of a struggle.

Note

Wander round the other half of the bird reserve in the Camargue. Hot and sticky.

7 AM

Running 43:00 [3]

Pre breakfast run with J up onto the ridge from Castagnols. Gorgeous morning. Feeling good to have got out early
10 AM

Walking 1:30:00 [2]

Walk up the ridge behind Vialas. Lucked out with finding some gorgeous old paved ways leading up into the hills. Back down to the village from the other side of the corrie. Brilliant. Out for 4:20 or so. Small world - bumped into EJ on main street of Vialas!
3 PM

Swimming 5:00 [1]

Pools in river below Vialas

Tuesday Jul 19, 2016 #

Running 1:25:00 [3] 10.0 km (8:30 / km)

Family walk-run up onto the Pic de Finielles on Mont Lozere from Le Bleymard.

Note

Early evening walk with J from accommodation at Castagnols. Killing some time until scary lassie would let us into her kitchen to cook.

Swimming 10:00 [1]

Pools at Pont de Montvert (still Le Tarn) and later below Vialas

Monday Jul 18, 2016 #

Walking 1:30:00 [2] 20.0 km (4:30 / km)

From St Enemie up to a col then drop into St Chely. Welcome lunch stop at the auberge before walking the 5km back above Le Tarn. Great walk, especially the descent to St Chely. Hot again. Out for 4h ish

Swimming 5:00 [1]

Cool off in Le Tarn

Sunday Jul 17, 2016 #

Kayaking 3:00:00 [2]

Sur Le Tarn de St Chely a Pas de Soucy (20km). Brilliant. Had the river to ourselves for the first couple of hours as we were somewhat more efficient than others in getting started. More folk around after La Malene but they mostly made us look like pros. Nothing too challenging on the water. Lots of mini rapids but managed to keep upright and only fell out with E after ~17km :-) Hot. Very. Scenery fantastic. Heron on the bank, vultures overhead and the biggest toad ever waddling down to the river.

Swimming 5:00 [1]

Cool off in Le Tarn

Orienteering race 1:21:00 [3]

O France day 5. 18' to number 1 was not the start I was looking for. Kind of lost any competitive interest after that, and made lots of bad mistakes. Not important - we're on holiday :-) E managed to uphold the family name with a great 2nd place overall.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Swimming 10:00 [1]

In the Tarn at Vignes

Orienteering race 59:00 [3]

O France day 4 "middle distance". Well if the first few days were a bit bingo then this was a whole scale worse. Really couldn't figure out what techniques to use. None seemed to work too well and relocation was just impossible. Ended up 3rd despite 15' of mistakes!

Running 15:00 [2]

Swimming 10:00 [1]

Lake at Ceilhes

Note

Evening walk from Montaigut ~1+ hr

Thursday Jul 14, 2016 #

Note

Rest day. Velo-rail freebie then a pleasant walk up the cliffs above Roquefort.

Wednesday Jul 13, 2016 #

Orienteering race 44:00 [4]

O France Day 3. Out in the forest first and playing games of hide and seek without any tracks going in and out from behind the bushes. Some good nav but too many mistakes for a decent result.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Note

Late afternoon walk from Montaigut up to Col de Pas des Croix then along ridge to the road.

Tuesday Jul 12, 2016 #

Orienteering race 1:09:00 [5]

O France Day 2. Lots of good bits again today. Unfortunately the 24' trying to find no 51 kind of blew the race :-( Not too happy with the map in that area.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Orienteering race 1:05:00 [5]

O France day 1. Lots of good points from today's race but annoyed to lose 5+' on a control when I had been standing 3m from it earlier. Surprised to take a win but late start probably helped.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Note

Evening walk from Montaigut up to the Col and back

Sunday Jul 10, 2016 #

Orienteering race 13:00 [5]

O France prologue sprint in Nant. Ok race but the most exciting area. Worst mistake was getting the run in wrong. 10" down in 2nd

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Swimming 10:00 [1]

Lake at Ceilhes

Note

Evening walk from Montsigut. Drop into the gorge then up other side to the old limestone grinding mills

Saturday Jul 9, 2016 #

Swimming 10:00 [1]

In the Med. Hot hot hot.

Note

Wander round bird reserve in the Camargue. Pink flamingoes amongst lots.

Running 30:00 [3]

Recovery run down the DW and across the road to the river bank. Beautiful day. Feeling tired, but a couple of rest days coming up.

Wednesday Jul 6, 2016 #

Road cycling 1:23:00 [3]

Home to Potties, over to Finzean by Corsedarder and back by S Greens. Tired, but chose this route to get me working though it. Cross-training is good for days like this when I am trying to get some volume in. Enjoyed it.

Tuesday Jul 5, 2016 #

Running 52:00 [3]

Through Aboyne castle grounds and golf course to back of loch. Loop up though Coull and back down to the TW. Took a while to w-u, but then feeling pretty good, especially on the climbs. Nice morning.

Walking 1:00:00 [2]

Glas Maol from Glenshee. Intended to continue to Creag Leacach but E had a refusal. Stayed pretty much dry and blew away the cobwebs. Out for ~2h

Monday Jul 4, 2016 #

Running warm up/down 22:00 [2]

Lap of the woods and short w-d after doing some reps

Running intervals 15:00 [5]

10 x ~50s with 40s recovery on the flat. Feeling tired and this was a real mental battle, but one that I need to overcome more often to try and get a bit of speed back.

Mountain biking 4:40:00 [2] 72.3 km (3:52 / km)

First challenge of the holidays... Deeside Way Aberdeen to Ballater with J and E. On MTB but with touring tyres which make it a lot lighter to ride. Left Duthie Park just after 09:30. Scone / ice cream stop in Banchory to get some energy for the Scolty climb. Could have done with some food by Potties but continued on for lunch stop at an excellent wayside kitchen just past the Dess high point... homemade garden veg soup and raspberry bakewell cake... mmm. Managed to drag ourselves away again within the hour (we had to retrieve the cars somehow) to continue on for the last easy third. A bit of sore bum wingeing past Dinnet, but some other riders provided enough challenge to pick up the pace again for the last blast into Ballater. Bothy stop well earned. Good day.

Mountain biking 20:00 [2]

Down to the village for some bread and back

Running 1:50:00 [3]

From Tullich kirk ran up onto Crannach Hill from the track to the east - intended climbing to the ridge sooner, but kept having a refusal when I looked at the heather. It was as bad as it looked. Dropped off to the west from the summit to cross Tullich Burn and pick up tracks from an old farmhouse back round to Tullich mast. Then down the big track to pick up the path back across Tullich Burn to the kirk. Bit of shuffle. Think I was dehydrated before I started and never really got going, but enjoyed most of it all the same.

Mountain biking 50:00 [2]

To Aboyne and back for celebratory end of year curry
