Mountain biking 45:00 [3]
(injured)

With E at Cambus. Went up the big track and left down the reverse of the Cambus canters from the top corner, then turned right up towards Cambus quarries to explore some of the single track we found the other day. Was really nice and not too technical. E declared it boring but I made him go back up to do a second loop.Half way round the loop there is an avoidable jump but to try and liven things up for E I suggested he had a go at it. He did, and then of course told me I had to do it. So I did. Result was a big crash landing fair and square on my head (thank god for the helmet) with blood gushing uncontrollably out of my nose. With E's help and a lump of moss clamped over my nose managed to get back to the car, load up, and drive single handedly down to Aboyne minor injuries unit. Got mopped up and sent home with some painkillers. Doc reckoned I might have avoided breaking my nose but only time will tell. Apart from the oversize nose the rest of my face is bruising up nicely now and is going to look classy tomorrow. Upper back and neck also feeling a bit jarred and stiff but could have been a lot worse tbh.

Walking 45:00 [1]

Abortive attempt to climb Ben Liath Mhor above Achnashellach. Climbed up to the col below Coire Lair and started onto the main climb up to the ridge. Cloud was down on the tops and wind was getting increasingly ferocious. E had a refusal so we turned back. He was probably right, as I doubt we could have stood up on the summit ridge. In any case seems a shame to do such a cracking walk on a crappy day. Fickle west coast weather. Out for 2h.
3 PM

Running 45:00 [2] 4.7 km (9:34 / km) +172m 8:06 / km

After recuperating in the tearoom at Shieldaig went for an explore of the peninsula with J and E. Not moving very fast post morning walk and lunch but weather brightened up a lot and it was a really pleasant foray. Legs feeling last night's run in them.

Walking 45:00 [1]

Up Meall a Bhuchaille with J and E. Beautiful day and superb views over the Cairngorms. Out for 1.5h
6 PM

Running 1:03:00 [3] 8.25 km (7:38 / km) +282m 6:31 / km

Ended up in Dingwall for the night. As this is my wee adventure for December I felt I should do something a bit different, so a headtorch run up Knockfarrel and Cnoc Mhor seemed like a good plan. Lovely night and didn't feel at all cold on the ridge. Climb felt good. Still a bit stuffed up in my head but legs working fine. Loved it :-)

Mountain biking 35:00 [2]

Cycled with E from bottom of the big Birse track round to Glen Cat through Ballogie estate to meet the midpoint of the Sondagsbana.

Orienteering 50:00 [3]

Joined in to run the second half of the Sondagsbana corridor route on an OS map, to check out the terrain for 6-day potential. Mostly nice going, but a few badly brashed bits. Felt ok running and was able to hold my own in terrain with the youngsters, except for the downhill sections. Cold not really bothering me - fingers crossed on its way out.

Saturday Dec 27, 2014 #

Running 52:00 [2] 8.0 km (6:30 / km)

Maroc run from home, down to the river, along the river bank and island path as far as the fancy hut and wee bridge. Then turned back with E returning by track / road and a couple of shortcuts across the fields. Easy pace and cold wasn't a problem. Another good turn out.

Friday Dec 26, 2014 #

Note

Stuffed up - no fun run this year.

Thursday Dec 25, 2014 #

Running 53:00 [2]

Christmas run up Mortlich with J, E and CM. Magic morning with the sun rising red over Kerloch. Really pleased that E was keen to come along with us. Good start to the day.

Note

Not so chuffed that E decided to give me his cold for Christmas. Have gone 10 1/2 months without any lurgy - shame I didn't quite make it to the year.

Mountain biking 30:00 [1]

Up to Loch Callater from the A93. Easy ride. Also back again at end, but not much effort required for that.

Walking 1:00:00 [1]

With J and E up Carn an Tuirc from Loch Callater by the big track. Easy climb with just a few sections of hard-packed snow. Great day to be out in the hills. Lots of white hare and a couple of raven. ~2.5hr out and back

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Monday Dec 22, 2014 #

Walking 1:30:00 [1]

From Loch Muick cp round the north side of the loch, out towards Dubh Loch to the first view point (new to me), back the same way to Loch Muick and back round the south side. Out for almost 4h total.

Sunday Dec 21, 2014 #

Running 1:30:00 [3]

Morven winter solstice night run. Mild but windy. Legs tired, so didn't flog it - 55' up and 35' down. Good turn out of 30 or so.

Saturday Dec 20, 2014 #

Running 55:00 [3]

Maroc run at BoV. Ran with E up to the top track to meet the group coming over the shoulder then continued on with them onto Cnoc Dubh and back down the other side. Not a great morning but some glimpses of sun between the showers. Good turnout. Saw a caper flying across the top track.

Note

Back niggle from Wed moved down to the mid back area yesterday. Didn't seem too bad so ignored it, but jumping out of bed this am it spasmed sharply. Eased off a bit and was ok running, but then seized up again pm. Seems to be a bit better if I keep moving about.

Friday Dec 19, 2014 #

Running hills 15:00 [5]

3 x big DW hills from bridge to high point. 4:58, 4:58, 4:59. Jog back recovery of 4:30. Good consistency. Think my pb on this 4:48 so happy enough with the pace too. Legs felt pretty good. Office Christmas lunch well and truly earned.

Running warm up/down 32:00 [2]

Loop through the woods and back by the DW before hill reps. Also jog back down between reps.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Thursday Dec 18, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Upper back stiff and sore just below neck - noticed first last night after O, but not aware of doing anything to it. Gradually eased off during the day. Decent walk along the river pm - nice unplanned outing.

Orienteering race 1:01:00 [5] 5.3 km (11:31 / km) +216m 9:34 / km

DNC Raemoir. Nice night. Legs tired but knew I should be able to block that to get through this. Not very sparkling navigationally losing 3' on 3, 1' on 8 and 1' on 13 plus a few other wobbles. Spending too much time looking at the ground and not picking up enough around me, including looking for better lines through the rough stuff. Could do better!

Running warm up/down 5:00 [2]

To start

Tuesday Dec 16, 2014 #

11 AM

Running 3:00:00 [3]

Carn an t'Sagairt Mor from Ballochbuie. Great day. Combination of wind slab snow that was mostly firm to run on and thin layer of powder over ice that was not so good. Fortunately the latter was easily avoided by adjacent bare / thin mix with heather. Only one slightly scary section on the final ascent where an axe would have been a comfort. Cold wind on top, so not much hanging around except for a few photos. Discomfort in the groin / lower back / upper hamstring region later in the run, probably brought on by awkward snow running. Hopefully nothing a good stretch won't help sort.
7 PM

Running 35:00 [2]

Really didn't need this but E was keen to go along to DR. Hoped it might ease off my niggles from earlier. Not sure it did, but hopefully didn't do any harm either. Mix of w-u, a few drills and jog while others did intervals.
8 PM

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Certainly feel a bit better in the lower back area after this.

Monday Dec 15, 2014 #

12 PM

Running intervals 32:00 [5]

8 x 3' +1' round Loch Kinord with J. Felt hard - good session. Lovely morning.

Running warm up/down 21:00 [2]

To bridge on the LK path from Dinnet and back from end of intervals.
4 PM

Running 15:00 [2]

With after school club. Lap of the woods and then 8 "sprints" which I jogged.
9 PM

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Sunday Dec 14, 2014 #

Running 48:00 [3]

Easy run with J from the Hardys. By mix of boggy path and road up to Blackshaw Head, then back by road. Dreich and a cold wind.

Saturday Dec 13, 2014 #

Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]

Decent w/u and d with J before and after race.

Running race 21:44 [5] 5.0 km (4:21 / km)

Park run debut at Fountains Abbey. Really happy to run sub 22. Beautiful morning and a nice course. Will do this again when visiting parentals.

Friday Dec 12, 2014 #

X-country skiing 55:00 [2]

Ventured up the glen to see if there was enough snow for a play on the skis. Parked just past the end of the forest on the Glen Muick road and headed up the track onto Drum Cholzie. Plenty of snow, but it had been blown about a lot, so there were quite a lot of bare patches on the track. Avoidable on the way up and got most of the way to the first plateau before finding the track completely blown free of snow. Left my skis here and continued as far as the first high point. Could see bad weather moving in by now and was already feeling pretty arctic, so a good time to turn round and head back down. Some ok skiing for most of the way down, with a bit of heather mixed in in places. Took skis off before the last descent to avoid too much rock skiing. Not exactly a classic day out, but nice to get on the skis and a good reminder of how difficult Scotland can be, both weather wise and snow conditions.

Orienteering 1:36:00 [3] 10.4 km (9:14 / km)

Control collecting at Shooting Greens. This seemed like a completely different forest today. Legs had some bounce back in them and I actually really enjoyed it. Unfortunately found 144 on the wrong boulder, which was really disappointing, but perhaps a relief to the people who spent a long time looking for it. I wasn't confident when I hung it and should have checked it more carefully - lesson learned. Car park to finish round all the controls in 89'.
Road still hadn't been gritted by midday and was utterly lethal.

12 PM

Running 50:00 [3]

Followed J down to the r/w to see if I felt up to doing some intervals. No surprise that there wasn't anything in my legs yet, so carried on for a feel good run instead. Down to Wh Cott, across A93 to Belwade, Drumnagask, down to the river bank and back along to Dess Mill. Very pleasant and felt better for it.
5 PM

Running 15:00 [2]

DNC Shooting Greens - jog down to start with the maps and back to car park. Caught in a blatter of snow.

Turned into rather more of an epic than I had hoped. Combination of rough tough forest, wintry night and full on technical orienteering proved too much for many. Need to check number 8 on the long course - caused lots of problems and can't be totally confident that it was correct. Will see tomorrow. Relieved to count everyone back in safely.

Tuesday Dec 9, 2014 #

Orienteering 1:50:00 [2]

Control hanging at Shooting Greens for DNC. Rough tough stuff. Not moving very fast. Still feeling very tired. Out for 2h30m total.

Monday Dec 8, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Needed - feeling quite drained

Sunday Dec 7, 2014 #

Mountain biking 25:00 [2]

Maroc TS Sondagsbana at Allt Cailleach. Cycled up with E to the jelly baby crossover spot. Thin layer of snow on the tracks was really quite nice to ride on.

Running 1:15:00 [3]

Short out and back on the track to keep warm while waiting for the runners at the JB supply point. Then headed up to the high point on the hill - well worth it for some stunning wintry views. Ran back form JB point with RC and JR via a mix of terrain (where we were meant to be) and track. Letting JR do the navigation which meant I could just about hang in! Tired today, but able to work once I got into it and still ok at the end.

Saturday Dec 6, 2014 #

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

W-u before DR relay. Took a while to get going.

Running race 36:11 [5] 6.6 km (5:29 / km) +220m 4:42 / km

DR relay at Glen Tanar, middle length leg. Felt very tired and heavy legged at the start (too many hours in the legs), but improved once I got into it. Steep section of hill was tough but managed to keep running. Nobody around to push me on, but think I worked quite hard anyway. Managed to take the wrong route near the start, handicapping myself by 30s or so. Quality session and fun too.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Friday Dec 5, 2014 #

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]

Checking out S Greens for next weeks' night O. So rough going. Such a shame as it technically great, especially with the new map. Mostly walking with a bit of jogging on the tracks.

Thursday Dec 4, 2014 #

Mountain biking 1:18:00 [2] 22.8 km (3:25 / km) +180m 3:17 / km

From Braemar out the Linn of Dee road to Mar Lodge, along the N side of the valley past Linn of Quoich and on to Invercauld. Return by A93. Easy ride as legs were tired.

Wednesday Dec 3, 2014 #

Orienteering 49:00 [5]

DNC at Countesswells. Bit of a blast but enjoyable. Pretty happy with my technique - flowing well and compass working well. Just need to be a bit more careful to check compass on exit from controls, rather than judging direction from entry angle. Garmin said I ran 12.5km including a wee trip round and about Peterculter ;-?

Running warm up/down 6:00 [2]

Felt awkward when I first set off to the start, but a few minutes of w-u made a big difference.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Tuesday Dec 2, 2014 #

11 AM

Running 58:00 [3] 9.92 km (5:51 / km)

Plan said railway intervals, day said hills, legs said neither. The day won - we've not had enough of these clear crisp winter mornings yet to let it go. From station square in Ballater ran out to the Tullich mast track, reps up to the top, then down the other side. On a track initially but lost it eventually in the forest. Some really nice terrain up there, highly mapable, but maybe a bit inaccessible? Came down to Pass of Ballater, crossed over, then up Craigendarroch from the back and down the other side into Ballater. Feeling tired throughout, but such a lovely day it was still really fun.

Running hills 32:00 [4]

16 x 1' + 1' up to the mast. Felt tough.
7 PM

Running 25:00 [3]

To and from green and steady while E did 8x1' reps.

Road cycling 1:57:00 [2] 41.4 km (2:50 / km) +490m 2:40 / km

Home to Potties, S Greens, Strachan, Glen Dye loop, Finzean (tea-room), Corsedarder, Mill of Cattie, Potties and home. Good spin. Rain stayed off. Legs tired by the end. New booties were super warm - should help extend the cycling season.

Running 15:00 [2]

With the after school club
