Orienteering race 1:29:00 [4]

Glen Dye brown. Was 12:30 by the time I got out on this after coaching new-comers and walking round the white course. Realised I was likely to get low on fuel, but didn't fancy a sandwich. So set off just to take it steady and get some good training in. Mostly went well, Oing on auto-pilot quite a lot, but messed up no 10 when I switched off from the compass. Stopped at 13 to unfold my cds and, more importantly, grab a handful of blaeberries. Map / control siting was strange at 16, but was able to laugh at the map error without losing time. On the way to 17 dropped my right foot heavily onto a sharp pointy rock that bruised the sole under the arch. Then somehow managed to mp at 18! Not sure quite what happened yet - the control was on my line at about the distance I expected and clearly I didn't check the code. No excuses - numpty no 2 for the w/e. Was flagging badly by this stage anyhow. Not too disappointed tbh as it was a good training session.

Orienteering race 45:00 [5]

Balgownie SOUL. Was quite up for this and decided to attack it. All went pretty smoothly until the area around the mill where I completely lost myself heading from 21-22, jumping ahead on the leg and then completely failing to manage to relocate. Total case of brain explosion from trying to run too hard. Lost 4' here - game over. What a numpty!

From Queen's loch along the road as far as the Gamie's track, up this through B'more map to junction with Fungle, then back down that way. Felt rubbish at the start but convinced myself it was mostly in my head, so carried on with a steady plod. Feeling better for it now.

8 x 2' + 1' round H'head at lunchtime. Good once I got going. Ran 2nd one too fast trying to chase someone down.

Long loop at Glen T with JS and E on bike. Legs felt too heavy to try any intervals, but ok for a steady plod. Another amazing evening - so beautiful with the sun on the heather.

Broad Cairn with J and E. Nice day, pleasant walk, good pace. Up in 1:30 and back down in 1:15. Tired legs - definitely feel like they raced yesterday.

Lonach Games. Another first for me. Ran way better than last w/e and actually felt like I was racing. Good wee course and would be better another time knowing what was to come. 4th L but impressively beaten by a 10 yr old lad. One for E next year maybe? 4 hill races in 4 weekends - pleased with that.

Shooting Greens. Up the wee path from the cp, along the ridge to the big track, down and onto the single track towards the river, left along the low track to edge of forest, up to DW and back up to the cp. Not quite as long as I'd planned, but pleasant enough.

Down to the river by the Dess Burn, along the bank and back by the DW. Impressive tide line from last week ~3m above current (high) level. Planned to go a bit further but cornered by MB before I got out.

Day off. Out by cow shit alley and back by bullivard with J. Stayed bright for the duration, but chilly. Legs feeling fine again.

Bit of a fail today. Headed up the east side of Glen Gairn as far as Lary and back the same way. All feeling tired and E in a grump. Decided cakes was a better option.

Hill Race race 52:12 [5]

Tap o Noth hill race. Felt really sluggish and found it hard to get going. Started way back, but gradually passed a few on the climb. AH ahead all the way up, but catching her slightly on the steeper bits and only 2m behind at the top. Hoped to catch her on the way down, but not a hope - legs were just too tired to work on the descent, and she took 50m out of me on the second half of the hill.
5th L. Not a great performance but hopefully all helping move me in the right direction. More hill races in the last 15 days than in the previous 18 months.

With J down the DW towards Kinker and then R down the alley of trees to cross the A93 at the bend. On down to the river with the intention of running along the bank, but there was no bank to run on, so had to turn round and go back the same way. Don't remember ever seeing the river so high or so brown.

With E from Linn of Quoich in to the foot of Beinn a Bhuird and back out again after. Clarted and soaked by the end. Midgey too. 50' in, 37' out.

Walking 1:30:00 [1]

Ascent of Beinn a Bhuird. Dry at first but cloud down and then some rain once we got into the cloud. Good pace. Jogging much of the descent at E's instigation. 1h 40m up and 1h 05m down. Didn't meet a soul until we picked our bikes up to head back.

Hill Race race 49:08 [5]

Tarland Show hill race. First time for me. Didn't feel great at the start, but managed to keep going steadily on the hill and actually ran all of it. Wasn't in a real head to head with anyone and ran the descent a bit more relaxed than I might have otherwise. 3rd lady behind Steph (a long way) and Sonia.

Absolutely exhausted when I woke up this morning and didn't think I'd be capable of much, but decided the best cure was to get out and try to do something. With E from Dinnet over the top track to Glen Tanar, up the glen past half way hut, then right by the landrover track back over to Deeside and return on S Dee road. Really lovely day and felt surprisingly ok on the bike. Out for 2:20.

Hill Race race 1:00:23 [5]

Aboyne games hill race. Not feeling in anything like race shape, but decided it would be good for me to do this, and couldn't really think of a good excuse not to. Didn't intend to take it too seriously but soon found myself playing cat and mouse with Marie, so it turned into a full on effort. I actually don't think I'm capable of running a race without getting competitive. Had got a few m ahead of M on the descent of the Fungle but she wound me back in through the village and we came to a pact to finish together - quite sure she could have beaten me from there if she'd wanted to. 4th= ladies so pretty happy with that. Touch slower than my 2006 pb (53:40). Wet.

With E on his bike from Cambus bridge, S side of the river through Inchmarnoch to Ballater and then back by the DW. Felt good for the first 30' or so, but tired in the second half.
